Hans Zimmer's score...one of my all time fav movie soundtracks. I get the chills at that end scene where Simba finally climbs pride rock and embraces his place in the circle of life. unreal.
The lion king has been such an important part of many childhoods since it came out but what is so remarkable is that whereas some childhood entertainment loses alot of luster once the nostalgia goggles come off I find my appreciation for this film to grow the older I get. I personally don't believe disney has yet created a more beautiful film since it isn't just a detailed rendition of african wildlife but it's such a deliriously colorful and expressively animated film to boot. The story is honest in it's portrayal of the corruption that exists in the world but more importantly in the hope that good moral judgment can overcome such corruption. The voice cast is pitch perfect the soundtrack remains legendary and the script while perhaps not wholly original deftly balances searing emotional truths with charmingly silly antics. I agree. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is just brilliant. Disney's best, by far. And the best part is, it's finally making its way to the stage here in the States. Playbill.com released an article the other day that said, "In spring 2015 Paper Mill Playhouse will once again partner with Disney Theatrical Productions to present the U.S. premiere of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', inspired by the Victor Hugo novel and created for the stage by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwartz." I'm SO excited for that! I've been waiting for them to bring their adaptation of "Hunchback" to the stage for years. Aladdin is my favorite Disney film. And here's my rankings of the Disney Renaissance: Little Mermaid: Good time no alcohol required Beauty and the Beast: Awesometacular Aladdin: Awesometacular Lion King: Worth buying on Blu-Ray (I may get some flack for that, but it does come close to awesometacular) Pocahontas: You're not gonna remember it in T-Minus 1 Day Hunchback of Notre Dame: Good time no alcohol required Hercules: Good time if you're drunk Mulan: Awesometacular Tarzan: Good time no alcohol required
My ratings: The Little Mermaid: Good Time, No Alcohol Required Well made, colorful music, awesome villain, and a fun female lead, but lacks the depth that other Disney movies had during this time. The romance was a little rushed and Eric as a character was not really interesting. But this film is pretty good and certainly needs to be credited as the film that launched the Disney Renaissance. Beauty and the Beast: Awesometacular Considered a masterpiece and for good reason. Incredible music, impeccable animation, interesting and deep main characters, a villain that pokes fun at the traditional Disney male hero, and a cast of incredibly likable and memorable side characters. Unlike most other Disney romances, this film takes the time to let the main characters fall in love, resulting in a romance that is much deeper and more believable than any other. This is Disney's greatest romance film and is one of their greatest works. Aladdin: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray Just might be the funniest Disney movie ever made.Great romance story as well, but what people rightfully remember most about this film is Robin Williams incredible improv performance as the Genie, which in my opinion is the greatest match of voice actor to character in Disney history. Villain is good (not great) and the music is nice as well. The Lion King: Awesometacular Disney's grand epic. Stunning animation, incredible music (particularly Hans Zimmer's breathtaking score), memorable characters, and most importantly, Disney's first true drama. The death of Mufasa stands as one of the greatest tearjerking moments in film history, Scar is one incredible villain, and the sequence of Simba's climb up Pride Rock today is possible my favorite moment in any Disney film. This film stands as one of the greatest animated films of all time. Pocahontas: Good Time If You're Drunk I don't think it's as bad as others do, but it is amazing to think that Disney had thought THIS would be their grand masterpiece while The Lion King was thought to be a throwaway. Everything about this film is boring relative to the other films. Uninteresting main characters, dull music, been-there-done-that story, and weak villain, this film is considered by many to be the film that started Disney's downfall. The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray Disney's darkest and most twisted film. Incredible villain, songs are great (including the consensus pick for best villain song in Disney history), main character is great, and the animation creates an immense scope. Were it not for the gargoyles, who were annoying and felt incredibly forced, this film would be an Awesometacular. Hercules: Good Time, No Alcohol Required This film has a lot of give and take. Some elements are great, such as the colorful animation, unique villain, and some great action scenes. On the other hand, some other elements don't work as well like the bland main character, lack of any chemistry in the romance, and the odd choice of gospel music for the accompaniment. A good Disney film, but not near my top. Mulan: Good Time, No Alcohol Required Like Hercules, this film has some give and take. The girl-power moral is good, the Chinese-inspired animation is beautiful, and the comedic side characters are very lovable. But the villain is forgettable and the main character feels less like a person and more of a poster. Not as bad as Pocahontas, but Mulan isn't doesn't have as much of a personality as Belle or Ariel. Overall a good movie, but not as good as it could have been. Tarzan: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray This one is a personal favorite of mine. Great animation, very deep and sympathetic main character, great music from Phil Collins, and some funny side characters. The female lead, despite being a damsel in distress, is incredibly in her eccentricities and quirkiness. The villain is a little boring, but outside of that, this film is really, really good.
Christopher Gerstle One of the best things about Disney is how there is really no bad or good movie that is set in stone. Everyone has their favorite and their least favorite.
Samwise thenotsobrave My ratings Little Mermaid- Awesometacular Beauty and the beast- Awesometacular Aladdin- Awesometacular The Lion king- Awesometacular Pocahontas- Awesometacular The Hunchback of Notre Dame- Awesometacular Hercules- Awesometacular Mulan- Awesometacular Tarzan- Buy on Blu-ray
I remember pre-Frozen (before i watched it) people were giving it The Lion King treatment. I was like no disney movie is better than The Lion King. I mean you got Matthew Brodrieck, James Earles Jones, Jeremy Irons and of course Mr. Bean. (And others like Nathan Lane) I knew no one from Frozen so I didnt know what to expect as far as voice acting. And I got to say Frozen had better acting. Idina Menzel (Elsa) sometimes slipped (or at least in my ears anyway) Just as good message and both are easy movies to just slip right into. So i do think Frozen is almost the superior movie. Only difference is The Lion King has a big wall of nostalgia around it which makes it better for me. Despite what the box office says. I mean Frozen did beat The Lion King in total money made. Lion King have more than 900 million and Frozen have a bit more then 1 billion! Enough of me rambling. In short, Frozen although new can still compete with the classics such as The Lion King.
People keep saying that Frozen beat out The Lion King in terms of financial gain, i still beg to differ on that. Yes, box office gross would make it look that way, but consider the following: - Ticket sales in 1994 were a LOT cheaper than they are now - The Lion King has had literally 20 years worth of revenue, including several re-releases, the world record for VHS sales, two sequels, an award winning Broadway musical (which alone has earned over a billion dollars) and a few spin off TV series' (with a new one expected to air in 2015) - Merchandise revenue...please, Frozen can't compete! The Lion King still wins on that front, no matter what the numbers say.
The Lion King is one of my favorite movies, too. And I have it on DVD so I can watch it on my laptop whenever I get bored :3 .... I gotta show this to my younger cousin someday :,D
i liked this movie even though im scared shitless of lions (ghost and the darkness) because when he met timon and pumba i kept thinking *to self* oh shit their gonna get torn limb from limb then i remembered o disney movie right
Best animated film ever made! Better than anything Pixar has made, better than anything Studio Ghibli has made. It doesn't get any better than this. -Fantastic music. Probably the best songs there's ever been in any musical. -Incredible score to fit the themes and tone of the film. Just mind blowing music all around. Score and musical numbers. -The animation is gorgeous. Probably one of the best looking 2D films ever made. There are some shots that have me gaze in awe at the beautiful scenery. -Voice acting has never been any better. Jeremy Irons and James Earl Jones alone make The Lion King 10x better. -Do I even need to talk about the themes? They're so meaningful! Whenever I'm depressed and feel like shit, I'll just watch The Lion King and instantly feel better. I guess you could say this is my therapeutic movie. The Lion King deserves 100 Awesomtaculars! Nothing comes close.
1. The Lion King 2. Maleficent 3. Tarzan 4. Beauty and the Beast 5. Brother Bear 6. Cinderella 7. The little Mermaid 8. Mulan 9. Aladdin 10. Pocahontas
@93Teejay im not a huge star wars fan, but i think its stupid that lucas put that in there. we already knew what he was thinking and it was so much more badass when he was silent
I think each generation has it's good and bad movies. But almost all Disney movies reach the rating that it was good even if they were "bad for a Disney movie" the biggest problem for me is the villains. They need to work on that and they will be back on track. Big Hero 6 was awesome! Could have had a better villain though. Hunchback was good but... Oh wait. Could have had a better...huh maybe that movie did hit all the right notes. But that movie still didn't do well at the box office. I think I lost my point in this comment but there you go. I don't feel like deleting anything.
For me, the Eras of disney are ranked like this: 1. Early Rennesaince (early 1989-1994) 2. Golden age (first five films) 3. Silver age (late forties to early sixties) 4. Late rennessaince (1995 - 1999) 5. New Age (Tangled to now) 6. The WWII age (in between golden and silver) 7. The Dark age (mid-sixties to 1988)
But why though? I'm not going to freak out or anything. I'll respect your opinion. But what about the movie don't you like? Are there Disney movies that you did like? And which ones? Most people I've talked to who have told me that don't care for Lion King have never really given me an answer that made sense. All they say is "It's overrated" So if you have a real reason not to like this movie I want to hear it.
I loved Lion King, but I was too young to realize how great it is. And How to Train Your Dragon 2 has taken the place of my favorite animation. You know, past is past. Your ex has no chance at all when you're deeply in love with someone else.
Oh and you should watch Jungle Emperor Leo: The Brave Can Change the Future, it's sort of like a sci-fi Lion King. It's based on Kimba the White Lion which The Lion King may have been inspired by, though Disney denied this. Either way both Lion King and Kimba are awesometacular.
I'm trying to get ready right now so I can catch the 4pm time...I dont give a damn, this is still one of the most memorable movies as a child...definitely the most nostalgic animated movie I've seen. Plus, I've been looking for an excuse to re-watch it for a while now...so why not give the 3D a chance this time and see this classic movie (and in stadium seating this time, unlike when we didn't have those as a kid).
I actually really loved The Emperor's New Groove. Because it was all the wackiness of Disney but no musical intro except the beginning. All the awesome talent that was in this movie, David Spade, Patrick Warburton, Irtha Kitt (is that how you spell her name), John Goodman... Loved every one of those actors. And the scenes were, almost all, like something out of an old school Looney Toons cartoon. I absolutely loved this movie. You should totally review it if you haven't.
I think if they would've put Tarzan in 3D (Its in the vault and it has more action) because it used more 3D elements and had better oppertunities for rendering than most of The Lion King 3D's background gimmicks which were more common
"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is my favorite, it's just a hair above "The Lion King". Honestly, it would be a tie between them, but "Hunchback" is much more adult and isn't afraid to show its messages to the targeted audience of kids (plus, it's based on a novel written by one of my favorite authors, Victor Hugo). Not to mention, the music in it is AMAZING. I've heard that "Hunchback" will be coming to Broadway and if that's true, I'll be first in line for a ticket.
The only movie in my life that saw twice in a roll!! Like "Daddy, the movie is over, put it again, pretty please!". I just recently saw the Broadway show and hadn't whatched the movie in a long time... I teard up at the opening song. :') JEREMY, PLEASE REVIEW OTHER DISNEY OLDIES BUT GOLDIES ANIMATIONS! (like Aladdin, Mulan or Small Mermaid ;D)
Thanks for the review Jeremy. Its hard to choose a favorite disney animation so I would have to see the lion king again to remember if it was a fav. But a couple of my favorites were Tarzan and Tangled.
Here are my rankings of the Disney Renaissance Films: The Little Mermaid: Awesometacular The Rescuers Down Under: Buy it on Blu-Ray Beauty and the Beast: Awesometacular Aladdin: Awesometacular : The Lion King: Awesometacular Pocahontas: Good time no alcohol required The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Buy it on Blu-Ray Hercules: Good time no alcohol required Mulan: Buy it on Blu-Ray Tarzan: Buy it on Blu-Ray
My parents told me that when I was one we all went as a family to see The Lion King and they knew that I liked it so they bought it for me on VHS and I watched it all the time and know it word for word. I was asked recently what's my favorite movie of all time and after some thought I realized it was The Lion King . It's a great story, great characters ,dialogues ,everything about it is Awesome and still is even when I saw it in 3D last year and it always will be my favorite movie of all time
My favorite animated Disney movie is Beauty and the Beast, but I swear Tangled is THIIIS close to replacing it, lol. Also, Timon is my favorite Lion King character - so serious - so your bit on him made me smile. And dude, you should totally review more Disney movies; like seriously. Rock on! :D
Yo Jeremy, I know you're a movie guy but I'm just curious… have you ever considered reviewing live shows? (The Lion King Broadway, Phantom Of The Opera, etc)
The Lion King, Tarzan and Mulan are my favorite classic disney movies and also have the music and songs in my opinion as well as Pocahontas and The Princess and The Frog
For me it goes: The Lion King Series, Balto, Oliver and Company, Fox and the Hound, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Toy Story Series, and then Cars. The Lion King will always have a special place in my heart because i can relate so much to a lot of the characters in it.

favorite Disney animated movie? I'd have to say lilo and stitch. I might be forgetting a few but that just popped into my head.
Jeremy you actually remind me of Timon a little bit. Lol
Aladdin is my favorite Disney film. And here's my rankings of the Disney Renaissance:
Little Mermaid: Good time no alcohol required
Beauty and the Beast: Awesometacular
Aladdin: Awesometacular
Lion King: Worth buying on Blu-Ray (I may get some flack for that, but it does come close to awesometacular)
Pocahontas: You're not gonna remember it in T-Minus 1 Day
Hunchback of Notre Dame: Good time no alcohol required
Hercules: Good time if you're drunk
Mulan: Awesometacular
Tarzan: Good time no alcohol required
My ratings:
The Little Mermaid: Good Time, No Alcohol Required
Well made, colorful music, awesome villain, and a fun female lead, but lacks the depth that other Disney movies had during this time. The romance was a little rushed and Eric as a character was not really interesting. But this film is pretty good and certainly needs to be credited as the film that launched the Disney Renaissance.
Beauty and the Beast: Awesometacular
Considered a masterpiece and for good reason.
Aladdin: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray
Just might be the funniest Disney movie ever made.Great romance story as well, but what people rightfully remember most about this film is Robin Williams incredible improv performance as the Genie, which in my opinion is the greatest match of voice actor to character in Disney history. Villain is good (not great) and the music is nice as well.
The Lion King: Awesometacular
Disney's grand epic.
Pocahontas: Good Time If You're Drunk
I don't think it's as bad as others do, but it is amazing to think that Disney had thought THIS would be their grand masterpiece while The Lion King was thought to be a throwaway. Everything about this film is boring relative to the other films. Uninteresting main characters, dull music, been-there-done-that story, and weak villain, this film is considered by many to be the film that started Disney's downfall.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray
Disney's darkest and most twisted film. Incredible villain, songs are great (including the consensus pick for best villain song in Disney history), main character is great, and the animation creates an immense scope. Were it not for the gargoyles, who were annoying and felt incredibly forced, this film would be an Awesometacular.
Hercules: Good Time, No Alcohol Required
This film has a lot of give and take. Some elements are great, such as the colorful animation, unique villain, and some great action scenes. On the other hand, some other elements don't work as well like the bland main character, lack of any chemistry in the romance, and the odd choice of gospel music for the accompaniment. A good Disney film, but not near my top.
Mulan: Good Time, No Alcohol Required
Like Hercules, this film has some give and take.
Tarzan: Worth Buying on Blu-Ray
This one is a personal favorite of mine.
Pretty much all movie companies are like that. You could say that about other film studios like Dreamworks or Warner Bros too.

Jeremy, can you pleace review more classic disney movies. I would really cool :D
0:09 coming from the guy who had never seen finding memo until like a year ago
This is by far the best animated Disney movie ever made. There is no comparison.
Yep. Frozen can run with the wildebeast.
Word
Frozen is nowhere near to even touching the likes of Lion King.
People keep saying that Frozen beat out The Lion King in terms of financial gain, i still beg to differ on that. Yes, box office gross would make it look that way, but consider the following:
- Ticket sales in 1994 were a LOT cheaper than they are now
- The Lion King has had literally 20 years worth of revenue, including several re-releases, the world record for VHS sales, two sequels, an award winning Broadway musical (which alone has earned over a billion dollars) and a few spin off TV series' (with a new one expected to air in 2015)
- Merchandise revenue...please, Frozen can't compete!
The Lion King still wins on that front, no matter what the numbers say.
The Unholypenguin ^^THIS. Give yoself a cookie dude, your awesome.
I wonder if Jeremy ever saw Confused MAtthew's review of this movie.
And yes, i DO love this movie, if you think I agree with CM
The three disney movies that made my childhood
1.The Lion King
2.Fox and the Hound
3.The Incredibles
Also i am now aware that the incredibles is not a disney movie
+Kingshanethelad
Toy Story?
Aladdin?
I loved aladdin and toy story, but this is my top 3 personal list.finsfan90
The Lion King is one of my favorite movies, too. And I have it on DVD so I can watch it on my laptop whenever I get bored :3
....
I gotta show this to my younger cousin someday :,D
You should review The Lion King 2!
i liked this movie even though im scared shitless of lions (ghost and the darkness) because when he met timon and pumba i kept thinking *to self* oh shit their gonna get torn limb from limb
then i remembered o disney movie right
The lion king is a masterpiece, Frozen is a quitte decent Disney movie but it comes no where near lion king.
I am happy to know that someone agrees with me on this. Frozen is a good Disney movie, but it does not match up to The Lion King
The lion king is overrated. Frozen isn't that far behind it.
The Lion King is my favorite animated film of all time, and you just made me want to see it again. Dammit...
Thank you Jeremy, The Lion King is one of my favourite films of all time too. Your opinion on it is WAAYYY! better than Confused Matthew's.
Who else here after The Lion King live action?
I wished I got to see that and the Jurassic Park 3d
@Angus Ng Has it in his top ten least favorite movies of 2019.
I love the intro and outro of all of these videos.
1. The Lion King
2. Maleficent
3. Tarzan
4. Beauty and the Beast
5. Brother Bear
6. Cinderella
7. The little Mermaid
8. Mulan
9. Aladdin
10. Pocahontas
@93Teejay im not a huge star wars fan, but i think its stupid that lucas put that in there. we already knew what he was thinking and it was so much more badass when he was silent
In my opinion Disney movies aren't as good as they used to be
I think each generation has it's good and bad movies.
For me, the Eras of disney are ranked like this:
1. Early Rennesaince (early 1989-1994)
2. Golden age (first five films)
3. Silver age (late forties to early sixties)
4. Late rennessaince (1995 - 1999)
5. New Age (Tangled to now)
6. The WWII age (in between golden and silver)
7. The Dark age (mid-sixties to 1988)
I got an advert to go and see the lion king live show whilst watching this!
I don't really like the lion king much.....just my opinion.
Yes! I found someone who agrees with me!
Um Why? It's so awesome!
Oh, for Pete's sake. Just those 2 seconds of the intro gave me goose bumps :)
It's so fantasically well done.
Either way both Lion King and Kimba are awesometacular.
i take great joy in filming that epic intro and sending it to people via snapchat....its that awesome
"If you haven't seen the Lion King by now... Whaat??" XD
Dude, you're like the RayWilliamJohnson of movie reviews.
Jeremy you should review some of the older fims like Jungle Book etc. i love these type of movies brings me back. btw love the vids
When Simba walks up the rock at the end...chills man chills
Great review!!! I loved the Lion King too and it still remains to be one of my all time favorite films!
Best movie from my childhood. Review Happy Feet next.
I think if they would've put Tarzan in 3D (Its in the vault and it has more action) because it used more 3D elements and had better oppertunities for rendering than most of The Lion King 3D's background gimmicks which were more common
Back then it's was always lion king vs space jam as a kid watching it over and over. Again
Lion king is and always will be the best thing Disney has ever made. Timeless messages and music, incredible film.
@ 1:54 For some reason, only hearing the "MAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!" part of the song was really, really funny.
The only movie in my life that saw twice in a roll!! Like "Daddy, the movie is over, put it again, pretty please!".
I just recently saw the Broadway show and hadn't whatched the movie in a long time... I teard up at the opening song. :')
JEREMY, PLEASE REVIEW OTHER DISNEY OLDIES BUT GOLDIES ANIMATIONS!
(like Aladdin, Mulan or Small Mermaid ;D)
Don't forget Nala's bedroom eyes when she and Simba get together.. XD That kind of stuff goes over your head as a kid...
I can't believe this was four years ago.
the lion king is one of those lucky movies that they can make again with more hi defness and 3d without adding a "NOOOOOOOO"
TANGLED *couph* Tangled. Movie blew me away and still does. Awesomeness.
no. it was okay but nothing timeless like the lion king.
Is The Lion King 3D Going to be Released in the UK?
Thanks for the review Jeremy. Its hard to choose a favorite disney animation so I would have to see the lion king again to remember if it was a fav. But a couple of my favorites were Tarzan and Tangled.
Top 3 favorite Disney movies lilo and stitch Tarzan. The Lion king

The Lion King was , is and always will be my all time favorite Disney animated movie of all Time
I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING you said there, the Lion King is my favourite movie of all time^.^
My parents told me that when I was one we all went as a family to see The Lion King and they knew that I liked it so they bought it for me on VHS and I watched it all the time and know it word for word.
Rock on! :D
Just watched it. Reminded me of my childhood. I cried so many times
The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie. It's getting the 3D treatment next year, will you review it? And I second reviewing a Miyazaki film.
The Lion King! I saw it yesterday and U'm still having emptions I had whole watching it. And there is nothing wrong with me!
Yo Jeremy, I know you're a movie guy but I'm just curious… have you ever considered reviewing live shows? (The Lion King Broadway, Phantom Of The Opera, etc)
I remember seeing it in cinemas as a kid and then as an adult in 3D and amazing almost 10 years ago love it
The Lion King, Tarzan and Mulan are my favorite classic disney movies and also have the music and songs in my opinion as well as Pocahontas and The Princess and The Frog
They should release it this year 3D or no 3D?
I wonder if you do reviews about classic movies? And with that I meant the Disney movies that's been released a while ago! I'm very curious about what your thoughts were about The Incredibles xP
My favourite movies are Jurassic Park, The shawshank redemption, Life of Pi and The Lion King, not in that order though...
"The Lion King" is, and will always be, my favorite Disney movie. I love it as much as I did when I was 6, if not more. Hell, I'm gonna go watch it.
"Look a that guy takin credit" hahahah why is that so funny to me
The Lion King, Robin Hood (Disney, 1973) Brother Bear, and Castle in the Sky, but I love so many of them :3
Top 10 Favorite Animated Disney Movies 10) Frozen 9) The Princess and the Frog 8) Wreck It Ralph 7) The Little Mermaid 6) Mulan 5) The Emperor's New Groove 4) The Lion King 3) Beauty and the Beast 2) Aladdin 1) Tangled! :D
Well at least you put Frozen at the bottom of your list. It was ok but the lack of a good villain killed it for me. It wouldn't make my top 10 Disney. Not so sure it would make top 20.
Out of topic but could you review Balto?
The Jungle Book ! I found it awesome when i was a kid and still i find it awesome now . Balu,Baghera,Mowgli,Sher'kan... too epic
So, how was Lion King 2? Never saw it. Does it hold up to the original?
Just watched this again today on a whim; I've liked Disney's recent CGI films, but now I REALLY want more hand-drawn features from them.
same here...i seen the the lion king in HD the other day for the first time since 8 years....still an awesome movie..... classic.
I really wanna see a 3D-version of Aladdin. That scene in the Cave of wonders with Aladdin on the carpet would look totally sick in 3D!
Hey Jeremy, would you consider that this would be the best way to bring back 2d cell animation? converting it to 3d?
