On a more serious note, you should just regularly backup your files & documents to external drives, and make copies of that.

When I was younger I didn't understand the importance of this. I had a 2TB drive full of photos and videos from family events that just up and died. I need to send it in but I'm worried about the cost. I don't have tons of money lying around.
Your first mistake is having them stored in digital means, you should of gotten those printed and hardened and they will never get lost
so my hard drive was clicking
and I opened it by myself because there are absolutely no clean rooms in my region

Didn’t LTT already do this?
Good video. Linus demonstrated how hard it is to fix the read/write armature. Austin did not repeat that and toured other parts of DS we did not get to see on LTT. Nice job!

I have a new found respect for data recovery companies, no wonder it's so expensive.
I learned the hard way that for unrecovable info like pictures or home videos you should always have two backups, I lost years of worth of family photos because my only external hard drive died on me after a fiend borrow it.
That's really cool that people will go to such lengths to recover files.

This video is actually a huge help, I’ve been trying to recover pictures of my grand father before he passed away and I haven’t been able to since the screen in my laptop won’t turn on. I’m for sure going to give them a call and see if they can recover the pictures!
Another thing you can do is take the hard drive out and put it into another PC. Preferrably a desktop
TheKidsInThePark what you could do is this
Take out the hard drive (search online for how to do it)
Find a desktop PC that already has windows on it
Plug in the laptop hard drive into the PC
Turn on the desktop and go to your file explorer
There you Will be able to look at all of the files and data of the laptops hard drive
I wish I could come to this wonderful facility. If only there was a way I could have someone bring me down to California to meet the wonderful Drivesavers team.

Austin did other things that were not in Linus's video like the Degausser and Drive Destroyer / NAND phone recovery.. So it was a good video..

That 10 MB hardrive was insane!
breaking the drive in half does not destroy most of the data. forensics can scan the halves (not including the degausser)
Most important questions do they look at the information that's on the disk. For example if you have confidential documents or images do they go through them

I remember the first time I opened a drive to try to fix it... and the amount of water I used to clean the plate, then leaving in in the open near the garden...... I wonder why didn't it work...

You don't need a cleanroom to save flash chips, only the super sensitive mechanical drives.
