Tennessee Williams’s timeless masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire opens with one of the most iconic lines in theatre history. Blanche DuBois (Gillian Anderson) arrives at Elysian Fields in New Orleans, to try and find her sister, Stella (Vanessa Kirby).
A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Benedict Andrews, was filmed live on stage at London’s Young Vic theatre by National Theatre Live in 2014.
It’s streaming for free from 7pm UK time on Thursday 21 May. Available until 7pm UK time on Thursday 28 May 2020.

This is by far the BEST PRODUCTION of this play. This is a dream cast. As an actor, for me, it was like sitting in on a master acting class.

I agree the acting was excellent but transposing the language/attitudes/mores of this 1947 play to contemporary times, absolutely did not work for me.
Did you actually watch the first production on Broadway with Jessica Tandy and Marlon Brando to make this statement?
Absolutely... Totally blown by the performances...
I like the modernized yet deliberately timeless setting here-in contrast to what some people think, I think it’s amazingly well executed (I am by no means a purist, by the way). And in all fairness, Blanche is kind of supposed to be deluded anyway, so the streetcar thing was probably a mix up or confusion of words on her part. I saw a production of this at my college and it knocked my socks off-it was what helped me get into playwriting.
This is the best thing I have seen in the theatre over the last few years - she is heart wrenchingly sad.
The actress that played stella was so good she was just true to the character. Plus her interactions with the actor that played Stanley were outstanding
Superb! Love the Young Vic, Old Vic - miss all theatre so much. This performance only serves to remind us how wonderful it is.
Is it possible to see the recording somehow? Many people here who missed it accidentally and are willing to pay.

I started watching the full version and when I went back to finish watching it they had taken it down!
So excited for this, aaaaaaaaaah! The only National production I've been lucky enough to see was the international release of Phèdre in Sydney, which was incredible - thank you so much for starting NT Live!! I really really hope Kate Duchêne has been cast in something this year that might be released digitally. I've never had the opportunity to see her perform on stage apart from short clips, she's such an amazing actress. Deep love for the original McGonagall, and the National Theatre

For me it felt similar prosodically - she practically emulated Leigh’s voice

Never saw it and I'm sure the acting was great, but it's a classic piece of theatre; what's with the modern take? Blanche would never have an Louis Vuitton bag.

Am I the only one who thinks that the actor’s voice for Stanley was too high-pitched for the hyper-masculine, violent nature of his character who is supposed to symbolize the primality and violence behind the ‘progressive’ face of the new Northern USA? In this production Stella’s voice is deeper than his and Stanley’s high-pitched voice in this production just doesn’t match what I think he was supposed to be like.
I find the accents a lil' stiff.
I would like to see you act. Always the ones not doing anything judging others.
That's how they are. They were the same in the 1950s movie and the old plays. Frankly the reason it sounds odd is because of the costumes.
Priyamvada Arte I disagree. It seems stilted to me. I recognize how the old movie sound was, the style of acting was more declaratory back then but by the “Streetcar” film there was a more natural lyricism and they all sounded natural in my opinion. This feels a wee bit staid in some ways and cartoonish in other ways. My parents were from the American south and I grew up around this kind of accent oh I can say that my mother marveled over how authentic British Vivien Leigh sounded in “Streetcar.” As for the contrast provided by the costumes… It’s clear to see that they’re going for what is called “modern dress” and that doesn’t really affect my opinion on the accents. Ri give these actors some credit this is a snippet from an early scene and I haven’t warmed up to them… And they by the same token may just be warming up. Although I find the accents stiff, my mind and opinion would probably gradually shift as it’s hard to judge a play of this caliber by one short scene I’d certainly be open minded and give this entire production a chance. To be clear, I said the accents were “lil’ stiff,” not the scene was bad.
@@michaelcarroll7883 Everybody can't act. That's why they have auditions. I really like Gillian and generally enjoy her acting. I am amazed at her British accents. I have seen several stagings of Tennessee Williams--two of Streetcar, one of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and one one or two of Glass Menagerie-but her southern accent is not on point for me--probably the worst I have seen if this clip is representative. The way she says "siiiistah" sounds inauthentic and what the caricature of a southern accent sounds like.
@@trident065 well, Louisiana has several accents, and all over the south it changes. Once I got used to it, I forgot it and loved the play.
I got a real problem with this “contemporary decor”, this modern interpretation. Loses too much, too much of the historical ambiance which, given its universal appeal, its archetypal power, renders such a “modern reinvisionimg” superfluous in the end. Now we’ll never really know just how good an actress Gillian Anderson might be……our loss. 🙏🎭

I understand every production wants to distinguish itself. But modernising and abstracting the set design and costuming undermines the drama in very subtle, but important, ways. In the original text, the staging and costuming is designed as such to establish the character's economic situation, cultural atmosphere, rigid gender roles, etc. Williams designed these things with deep intentionality - they invisibly, but profoundly, effect the characters on a psychological level. By removing the play from its original context, the drama is experienced on a much more, cerebral, abstract level, rather than an emotional level; by cutting the original design, it's the dramaturgical equivalent of cutting out Hamlet's To Be Or Not To Be monologue, because the audience is "familiar" with it. People might find it interesting in the moment because its novel, but it's ultimately just a less emotional experience. This is a shame, of course, because Anderson and the rest of the cast are amazing.
@Patrick Bateman Isn’t there an argument to be made that productions like this one translate those elements into a modern equivalent? I get what you mean, but for instance modern audiences may be too far removed from the way rigid gender roles were expressed in that time for example and find old codes used for expressing that to be inscrutable. Blanche’s original costume for e.g. no doubt has lots of signifiers that the audience of that time will have had no trouble decoding, but go over modern audience’s heads. Arguably the updated “equivalents” won’t capture the exact meaning, but if they make more sense to the audience, isn’t there something to be said for that? I do agree with you in many ways though - class for instance, the modern dress and setting clashed rather with the yawning class divide between Blanche and Stanley for example. The setting and costume is all recognisably modern, but the way their class divide was expressing itself stood out weirdly because in a modern setting that dynamic in America doesn’t seem to manifest in quite that way anymore (“Bow and present the flowers”)

Take it from a Southerner: the accent of the woman with sunglasses is horrendous and nothing like a real Southern accent. It’s extremely distracting.

Likewise. They'd have been better using their own voices than trying a difficult accent. And screeching all the time with no modulation.
Grew up in Tennessee and have lived in New Orleans for the past thirteen years… these are some of the worst Mississippi and South Louisiana accents I have ever heard. Yikes.
I love Gillian in this but I find her accent too strong - Blanche is supposed to be coming from a long lineage of aristocrats (hrrm white power tripping rapists. History is writen by the winners...)
