Without any of these magic companies my last 20 years would not be have had so many moments of enjoyment and fun . Who cares if they are big or small and if they make a lot or money or not. I paid thousands to take my kids to Disneyland for a magical moment of joy. Regardless the size of this company it was worth the expense. Same applies to these magic companies the joy that I have received from the tricks they sell is worth their existence and I am thankful for that. I hope they continue to grow and bring this awesome art to many others like me.
Happy Thanksgiving David - I do appreciate your comments about supporting business owners and families (and I have REALLY supported them $$) I knew about Big Brother but never associated it with Magic.
Nice thought for a topic! I like that it's almost a cottage industry and very community based. Plenty of scope for everyone to know everyone across the industry with the common goal of making magic
I’m in the UK and place orders with the businesses you mentioned, I had no idea of their size, I must mention that the service is absolutely superb especially when you grasp that my items are being sent internationally, I love the short videos from Penguin showing my items being stuffed into the actual Jiffy bag that is about to cross continents lol…I enjoy your content too…I reckon Big Brother is actually a thing and that maybe it focuses on the people that need watching (people like me lol) its not good to be constantly watching your back and wondering or worrying about unimportant stuff, life is a gift to enjoy let’s keep trying to make it much more magical..! 😇
Really missed an opportunity to say, "Let me tell you about Magic Big Brother" and then just cut the video. I do prefer to buy from the creator e.g. Brent Braun or Doug Conn just so it is directly communicated that I am happy they released a book or an effect. I understand they still get paid if I buy the book from Penguin, but there is a je nais se qui about buying directly from the creator.
Very nice and informative... Would you do a part 2 on the IBM... and other organizations that seem to have some amount of governance.... I was a bit surprised that no European companies were in your list???
Thanks David for putting a positive perspective on magic businesses Small business is great and they work so hard. Your comments cleared up misconceptions.
I only know this because I work in healthcare, but 50 or more is considered a Large Employer in the US. Under 20 Full Time Equivalent is considered a small business and susceptible to the same requirements as normal businesses. That being said, Murphys is still pretty small for being such an established company.
Perhaps, but that loses perspective over a company that has 1,000 employees. What is that? a venti company? LOL - in the grand scheme of things "50" is not what we consider to be a "large company"
@@magicorthodoxy I would say over 1,000 is pretty rare. These are mega corporations. In my industry, school districts and cities typically have 300-800 max. Most businesses we see are between 50-150 full time employees. Once again, just from my perspective dealing with Department of Labor/ Affordable Care Act type definitions of size and my specific corner of our industry.
Part of my reaction to this was, "It's true, magic is a community." And a very small community at that! We look out for each other and support each other in various ways. The other part of me wonders, "Gee, what brings this on?! What did you see/read/hear that made you feel like this needs to be addressed?" You don't have to answer that, but I DID have to wonder if Big Brother had finally caught up to you. (Do you need rescuing? Blink once for no, twice for yes!)
Great review. Appreciate your take on putting things in perspective. Magic makers, dealers, performers are all pretty much a cottage industry or one step up from that. Then @ the same time I do appreciate the honest\y of other reviewers (and you) when the product is not necessarily that great.
Hi, I'm thinking of doing one step ahead with colour match and a confabulation ending. Any suggestions for a confabulation ending(no assistance)? It could be high end. Thanks
Im a little annoyed that you had to make this video to dispel these.... 'myths'. Your content is TRULY appreciated by me. I watch alot of the magic reviewers and most are dry like a high school teacher. There is one who is more arrogant and lashes out when critiqued unlike you. You have personality. You crack jokes. You have a realistic point of view and express whether you like a product or not and dont try to force it upon us. You even express and promote checking out other reactors "dont take my word for it. Check out this person's review or that person's review ". My ONLY problem with your content is i dont understand HOW IN THE WORLD DOES THIS GUY GET PRODUCTS AND DOES REVIEWS SOOO QUICKLY?😂😂 You are awesome at what you do so keep doing it that way.
Hey David, sorry about this, but I checked with Google (as you asked/you did ask). A midsized business is 100-1000 employees, and a small business is under 100. This may be the first time my major in business administration in college was useful.😂 edit: I have to add that there are many definitions. But if a business has under 100 employees under the definition you found, what kind of business would it be????
I think it is all relative. The magic market is quite small so it is never going to lead to large corporations. The real question is how the individual players act & if they exploit their relative position within it. As an example Murphy's have refused to withdraw Hibnosis from sale despite the controversy with regard to plagiarism whilst many dealers {Alakazam, Penguin, Vanishing Inc etc) deciding not to stock. This is simply because Murphy's is big enough within a small market to ignore the pressure to protect originators work, They also seem to have some influence over the Magic Cafe. I remain unconvinced that this is always healthy. I also note the trend in some magic suppliers recognising that their influence is not entirely healthy by not releasing new effects through Murphy's eg, Alakazam in the UK. Is that the reason you now hardly ever review their new releases ???
When you are a "reviewer" where and how you receive your review items matters. Size of the business does not matter as much as influence. Our hobby/profession is small so the influence can come from a "small" business. That said I am not sure I get your ultimate point... Odd post from you.
Didn't murphys catch some heat for questionable sales practices? Also, didn't they produce and sell a blatantly stolen concept in magic and tripled the price? Not sure how much of a "warm fuzzy" feeling anyone gets from these companies these days.
I suppose everyone makes mistakes - companies, independents, politicians and pastors. The question we need to ask ourselves is can we learn to admit that each of us falls from time to time and then learn to forgive.
I think big brother in magic is actually mkre related to certain individuals thst try and gatekeep the art in their own way. The companies are small its the egos that are huge. 😂 Sometimes people get stuck in a group and it acts like an echo chamber and that leads to silos. All the stores mentioned are great! Now i have to tell my actual big brother he's not real 😂
You raise so many interesting points. Where i can i prefer buying from the creator or innovator. I'm happy for anybody to turn a profit. I applaud it. But please don't sell rubbish
What has bothered me is the public snipping in the magic world that is somewhat troubling BUT also shows the magic community is pretty small and very personal. Two edged sword i guess.
I never realized that magic companies were a small business. Also, google is not always right with their data, just saying. But thanks for the info. 👍🏻
Thanks for the Shout Out David!

I do not know how many people buy magic. I am sure the number of magicians is a very small part of the population.

Magic is a niche thing. The biggest a magic company can get will always be relatively small. And that's cool.

really? most of the time I feel I am the last one to review tricks

Or are you working for big brother... hmmmmmmmm lol. Nice piece very informative.

I work for a very successful “small” business … a Magic theatre with 5 employees! So I disagree with Google.
Thanks Big David 👍👍
