They weren't necessarily mismatched. One was a 1911 likely chambered in .45 ACP (large calibre, low speed, good for blunt force trauma), while the revolver appears to be in .357 magnum (small caliber, high speed, good for maximum penetration).
So in a sense, one gun could be good for crushing the chest cavity, and the other one to pierce straight through the heart.
