    • @cameralabs

      But Canon mount lenses are generally cheaper than others due to their volume, the 3rd party options and the second hand market. In fact I'd say their affordability is the main attraction of buying into the EF mount.

    I use my EOS 200D as the second of two cameras that I carry for wild bird photography, set to centre point AF. With the 300mm f4L lens, this competent combo' is only 1.7kg & that is important as I walk miles. For wildlife, the optical viewfinder makes sense. The other camera that I carry at the same time is the EOS 80D with the 400mm f5.6L & that combo weighs 2.08kg. One camera is in my hand & the other on a peak design camera clip on inside my backpack. The sensor is essentially the same in both cameras & I get results that I am very happy with. I anticipate that I will use one more generation of DSLR (EOS 90D?) before finally moving to mirrorless, with an adaptor in about 5yrs time. Most mirrorless cameras seem to have a premium price when compared with DSLRs. The 200D also gets used as a general purpose camera with my E-FS 17-55mm f2.8 lens, designed for APS-c sensors. I have no desire to upgrade to the EOS250D. Who uses 4k anyway?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 років тому +1

      you're right that mirrorless has historically been more expensive, but with the 250D / SL3, it roughly matches the M50 for features and price, so it becomes a case of whether you prefer having an optical or an electronic viewfinder. For me, the EVF wins for most situations, but if you can exploit the central AF point as you do on your 200D, it could work better for you. Sounds like a well thought-out setup you have.

    Too many M50 fan boys out there the truth of the matter is the SL3 is just as good Digic8 is fantastic eye A/f amazing and the battery life of the M50 is terrible not to mention the lens choice. The 250D for me is the biggest bargain out there by a long shot I've had the M50 and also have a 5Dmk3 and to be honest the 250D is what I always end up using for my mountain - sreet and landscape work it's small light and with great lens choice without using the £100+ lens adaptor needed for the M50. Side by side it's hard to notice any difference in this and my main work Dslr the 5D it's a no brainer and a top bit of kit for the cash.

    If this gave me 4K with Dual Pixel AF, and no crop, but nope, not going to happen. The EF catalog is awesome. The dumb 1.6 crop is math that is a bit harder 1.5 like most use. The M50 being a 1/5 bigger would have been mine but nope the M50 is too small for me. And it is poor form for just Canon speed lites. I have had the most fun with my SL-2 of any camera in recent memory. I cannot wrap my head around this camera. Nothing I really want here. As usual, your reviews are my favorite.

    Nice video, I'm glad you covered so many of the odd removals from previous models in EF-S/EF-M as well as the limitations of this camera's DSLR side. Hopefully this video and others will steer beginners toward the M50 and SL2. If a user has no experience with DSLRs/mILC and knowledge of what they are losing, the SL3 is certainly a fine camera, but that's about it in my opinion. This model doesn't give me much hope the replacement for the M50 will not have feature removals like the SL3/RP.

    Gordon, your reviews are always good. I think that the main problem that Canon has is them waiting on a new generation of image processors, as they design and fabricate their own, they are not likely to do as I guess Nikon did and get one tailored from Sony's technology to get "one out there today".
    I am primarily a stills photographer and shoot DSLRS but use an M6 system as a lightweight carry casual use camera and in that context would see the M50 as a better bet to the 250D. It is not just that the mirrorless M50 delivers more options but whilst the 250D does open up the full Canon and others lens range, in fact for a lightweight camera, the M series lenses are good and also very light, lightweight cameras need lightweight lenses too.

    At Canon they have a great masterplan that most of us does not understand. Or, they have a wrong decision making management in those current times. A flawless 4k, proper hotshoe and other fixes would have greatly helped sales. To me it seems they are scratching the bottom of the barrel waiting for some revolutionary strike. If so, they better speed up its release as they are damaging their reputation. Not so evident in sales terms today, but is today that they should grow the seeds of tomorrow

    Hello Gordon, thanks for this excellent review! I also saw your review of the Sony RX10 IV. I'm looking to move up from a smartphone camera and take up travel photography as a hobby. Would it make sense if I got the more expensive Sony instead of this Canon SL3 or SL2? because to achieve the same kind of zoom on the Canon as the Sony, I'd have to purchase a zoom lens which would then bump up the total cost to maybe more than the all-in-one Sony. Also for vlogging I'm sure there is a way with perhaps some accessories, to overcome the limitations of having just a tilting screen as opposed to a fully articulated screen, yes?
    Another thing is how would you rate Sony's autofocus to that of this Canon's dual pixel? Are they about the same in speed? Would love to hear your thoughts on this. I am gravitating to the RX10 but I also understand that a Mark V maybe be announced in the fall of 2019, so I may wait for that before deciding on my first purchase.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 років тому

      I'd say the RX10 IV is one of the best all-round travel cameras. The sensor's a bit smaller than a DSLR or mirrorless camera, but that's what allows the big zoom in a small body. The AF is also excellent. See my review of it.

    Hi Gordon, I used to watch your reviews back when i purchased my S8000FD, Good to see you're still going, Im looking to get back into photography, Would you pick this camera with kit lens 18-55 and 70-300, or FZ1000 2?, Would be using it mainly outdoors with occasional aircraft photography.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 місяців тому

      Glad you found me again! I'd be tempted for the DSLR setup if you're ok to carry it all around. the FZ1000 would be more portable, but less responsive. The most responsive superzoom is the Sony RX10 IV, but it's not cheap.

      You get about 5 times better battery life from the SL3, and both cameras have similar capabilities. You also get much wider lens options with the SL3. I think you should keep it.

    Nice work, Gordon - that eye detection demo was very nicely done. I have to say that Canon removing that center hot shoe contact seems petty and spiteful. I don't like that one bit.

    • @mikeymike1843
      @mikeymike1843 5 років тому

      I really don't know what the fuss is about the flash. I'm looking to buy my first camera and as long as it has a pop up flash I'm happy.
      Seems people just look at this camera from a experienced photographers view. As a beginner this camera is perfect. The main reason being ease of use, the picture view of what the function dials do ( P, AV, M etc ) will be invaluable to me as a novice.

    • @ToddEvans1964
      @ToddEvans1964 5 років тому +1

      It's not a fuss. Canon removed the center hot shoe contact for no good reason, other than to force people to buy their overpriced Speedlites instead of more reasonably priced third party options. I'm not outraged by that, I'm just voicing my opinion by saying I don't like it. When you begin to understand what a shoe mount or slave flash setup can do for your portrait photography (which may be sooner than you think), this might matter to you. Maybe it won't. But why start out at a disadvantage?

    • @mikeymike1843
      @mikeymike1843 5 років тому

      Still can't see the problem. If I want external flash later I have two options buy the canon flash or another camera. If I get to the stage where I am sufficiently experienced or capable of using external flashes, I'll probably will want a camera upgrade as well.

    I look for an opinion regarding this camera option. I am looking to get a camera to shoot kind of simple video for the moment, for you tube content, and eventually some vlogging and limited photo work. I already own a set of EF and EF-S lenses, including the 10-18 mm and the 24 mm pancake. I also consider the option that this camera may end up being a more static, small studio setup once i get something more light and advanced for on the go vlogging eventually. I am not interested in 4K for the moment. Do i lose anything of significance if i simply go for the 200D and just ignore the 250D ? Also, should i bother with EF-M series, since i already own EF/EF-S lenses? I also own a Sony A7 using adapted Canon lenses and vintage lenses, planing to invest in some FE lenses for photography in the future. Thank you!

    Hi Gordon, I have bought a Russian vintage mirror lens (Masuktov MC MTO-11 CA 1000MM M42). Is it possible to use it with a Canon EOS 250D?, which is the correct Adapter, M39, M42 or a T Mount? I would like to buy the camera, but honestly I don't have any idea or experience about it, I really need help .

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  3 роки тому +1

      You're looking for an M42 to EF mount adapter, but I can't guarantee it'll focus or exposure properly. Assume manual EVERYTHING and keep your finger's crossed it will focus on distant subjects.

    Thank you for the review. This saved me a lot of money. My mother is still using her trusty old 450D so I was thinking about buying her a new 250D. The specs look really great on paper and the camera would be a good match for her EF-S lens collection. But the missing flash pin as an absolute deal breaker for us. When she can't use her flashes anymore then the camera is pretty useless.

    • @cameralabs

      Was it the 800d or the 850d these days.
      That had more or less the same sensor and an actual upgrade in AF with the 19 point all crosstype AF system.
      Just checked it's the 800d and in my country it's actually cheaper despite being objectively better.
