- Vince McMahon tried to bring WWE antics and big money to bodybuilding.
No matter how large bodybuilding has become - it has always been a niche sport. While the prize money at major competitions has increased and the amount of divisions, athletes, and fans has increased year after year... bodybuilding is still decidedly not mainstream. Vince McMahon tried to change that by creating the World Bodybuilding Federation (or WBF) - bringing the kind of fireworks and over the top antics that you see in the WWE. With the gigantic financial backing of his successful wrestling business - McMahon was dead set on turning bodybuilding into the next WWE... but it didn't last.
Shawn Ray was one such bodybuilder approached by Vince McMahon to sign onto a contract. Shawn ultimately didn't bite - but in this episode of Bodybuilding Chronicles Shawn reveals what it was like behind the scenes at the WBF, how it temporarily threatened the IFBB, and the reason it ultimately failed. I see it a different way. It might have been a good thing if WBF succeeded. Competition is good. IBBF guys were underpaid and WBF helped to increase the pay for the IBBF guys.

0.45 "I passed the test" Not I was drug free, but I passed the test. Apparantly Lee Haney's blood was the cleanest sample. Not clean but the cleanest. Having said that, Haney was around 30lbs lighter.

I remember reading an interview with Gary Strydom and he said, the Weiders wanted the WBF pros to pay a reinstatement fee to come back to the IFBB. Strydom said, "This is bullshit, I worked my ass off to get my pro card"
The Weiders basically punished everyone for going to the WBF The Weiders did a lot for bodybuilding I guess, but they certainly didn't know how to embrace/handle competition.

You don't know what Shawn counter-offered, if at all... 225,000 yr 1, 250,000 yr 2 was what he was offered by the defunked WBF. Gary Strydom took 400,000 to join the circus. Bonehead.

But as I've only heard he had his own idea's thinking he's the boss & knows what's best,his way or the high way I guess. I'm not into the politics of the sport,to me there shouldn't be any!
What we do know 100% is, that no one is offering Deniz WORLDOFBB any money for anything!
If the bodybuilders that went to the WBF were still in great shape after the WBF collapsed and couldn't recover,thdn the only reason would be IFBB politics?
Man! I remember Aaron Baker and that ready for the world curl. I grew up watching all of you guys on ESPN a long time ago. I remeber that after the bodybuilding shows went off, would watch crunch fitness, Kiana's flex appeal, body shaping with Corey E. and bodies in motion with Gilad. ESPN was where it was at back then.

Yep. Good times back in the early 90s, watched all them shows, loved Kiana too, she was gorgeous. The Flex Mag workout was always a lot of fun to see , it helped give great exposure BB'ing.
Now ESPN is nothing but a shitstorm of political diatribes, as well helping to push the whole rotten LGB fucking T garbage with the whole disgusting Jenner thing. I mean, what's to be expected though, it's owned by one of the biggest infernal organizations out there, that being Disney.
Shawn you forgot to mention Dorian you lived in the shadow of the shadow l believe if Dorian had not come along you would of been Mr Olympia and yes l agree you made the right choice to stay otherwise you too would of been penalised, which is a shame because they were 13 Awesome bodybuilders & they were just trying to secure future for themselves & maybe there family's

Wat a bunch of bs. Bodybuilding is still one of the less paid profeshonal sports. The organisation just use the bodybuilders and make good money. The risk you have to take to get a pro card are not worth it. And you have to pay a fee every year also pay to compete. You dont even want to know how most of those guys make a living. Bb has a dark side no one is talking about😂

It pisses me off how the Mr Olympia & the cash he earned was Taken from him. Mc man could've took over bodybuilding competition completely but instead of doing what's right for the sport & the athletes he turned it into a Circus! That's to bad😔 now it's still mostly just a freak show,bubble guts & nothing like the healthier great physiques that bodybuilding was known for. That's just my opinion for what it's worth is anyone gives a fuck.
That was the main problem with it. For starters, BB'ing isn't a mainstream thing, and an extremely small fraction of wrestling fans would have tuned into that stupid shit. And I don't mean BB'ing being stupid shit, just Vince's version of it, as it was way over the top, cheesy, and way too angled toward the whole soap-opera gimmicks of wrestling. The piece in the beginning with Warrior talking about it sounded so damn ridiculous lol. Imagine a IFBB guy talking all tough like that in a promo, putting down his competition or just talking general shit like wrestling promos. It was so fucking dumb, and it was just Vince with more of his "take over the world" Rockefeller mentality and destroying all other competitive businesses. He got his wish since WCW went down, and now he is the last man standing, but the product is now equally as bad as the WBF lol. Why the WWE is even still around is mind-numbing. It's a joke and will NEVER be what it was once was.
It’s popular these days to scream about “rigged” contests when your favorite bodybuilder does not win, but McMahon would have turned bodybuilding into 100% scripted joke. Vince is a carnival barker who knows how to run a circus. When he gets into something, he has to bring it down to his level, so he knows how to control it. Does anyone remember the original XFL? Vince tried turning America’s favorite sport into a sideshow, and paid the price when the public would not stand for it.
Shawn was an awesome BB... As a person, however, he talks and it's verbal diarrhea... Don't get me wrong, he was informative on the short-lived federation but the way he talks... Ehhhh It's almost as if his shit don't stink.... Glad he never won an Olympia... He didn't deserve it...

Shawn this was very enlightening, thanks for sharing. You were my favorite bodybuilder, when I competed. Even today while juggling thoughts of my career and which path to pursue I always ignore the dangling carrot, I always ditch the quickest or most! And pursue the avenue that was long term growth and prosperity.💋
problem is bodybuilding contests are pretty boring to the average person. not much happens. hard to mass market. trying to jazz it up turned a serious, rather dull sport into a joke and the effort flopped
Padilla and Strydom and Demay had already peaked in IFBB so they and others were smart to take that money that otherwise they wouldn't have made.
To me the WBF was failure cause like the XFL he basically dived head first into a kiddie pool from a two story roof
Kyle Shiflet I think also like the XFL (original version), the product blurred the lines separating from wrestling. Big $ came at a price for the bodybuilders, having to play cartoon characters like their fellow employees did on the wrestling side. I’m sure some welcomed it (Mike Quinn for example, ‘cause he was a crazy showman). But overall, the public didn’t take them nor the original XFL players seriously when Vince’s face and antics were all over the product. Looks like XFL version 2 starting in a couple weeks, have HOPEFULLY corrected those past mistakes so there’s absolutely no connection with WWE felt or sensed.
Well if ur training partner took the deal he walked away with over 900,000 (in today's dollars) to workout, do one competition, and make appearances for 2 years. Yeah i wouldnt say they lost that much...lol. loyalty my arse...If you would have been offered more u woulda taken the deal. Also, wasnt the WBFs fault a lot of their careers tanked.
David Dearth was one of the best and consistently got fucked over. His conditioning was crazy even compared to yates.

Easy for you Shawn Ray, to cast judgement on the others in retrospect! They all were seeking to advance themselves life is all about choices and we all face setbacks.
You also took 2nd twice in the Olympia and had your own body building t.v. show on ESPN which was pretty damn decent as I recall and I wish still was around on t.v. Not one of those WBF guys did anything close to that except for Gary Strydom who was the winner. But he never got to have a great career in the IFBB. I will say, however, if Vince was truly giving 200,000+ contracts to all those guys I guess they did pretty well for themselves during those couple years or so. But, shawn ray had a hall of fame career in the IFBB so he didn't need all that distraction. Guys like comerford, Baker, Quinn, Zucc, and Quinn who had far far less success in IFBB needed the WBF.
All of the WBF bodybuilders were using anabolic steroids at a time when the WWE wrestlers were being closely monitored for substance abuse. 😡
Finally someone actually mentions the Mighty Mike Quinn. Sometimes I feel they treat Mike like a Ghost. I know he didn't roll like others did but that is what made him the bad ass he was.
