I also agree with collecting manga slowly especially because I used to be obsessed with the dopamine of unboxing them forgetting how expensive this hobby can be😭💗

I definitely feel like when you purchase manga as a treat for reaching a goal or if it’s a special occasion such as a new job or a birthday. You take your time making a more meaningful decision on what you want to buy and fee less guilty about your purchases. I like making each bookstore trip special and fun for myself.☺️

I understand where you are coming from. I started off buying manga because it was something new and my dopamine levels were high I brought so many manga and I still haven't read all of them. These tips are helpful.

Unfortunately, sometimes manga goes out of print, so they won't always be available. We can't predict the next one, but these are awesome tips!

Seeing some of my favorite series being on backorder for long periods of time definitely made me feel a sense of urgency when they did come back in stock. 😩

@@lauren1552 yep! I'm going through the same with a series that's literally just 5 volumes long completed and I cannot find the last 3 and it's not even that popular so I don't know why it's always sold out lol

I remember when you were REPPING Kaiju No.8 haaaard to the point where I put it on my list as my second ever manga to get but I never did because I hadn't finished my first one (The Promised Neverland) but I waited so long to where they came out with the anime so I just watched that and it's soo good my favorite character is soshiro 😆⚔️

Relate to the first tip 😂I had to sell a few series because I realised there was no point in buying manga I’ve already watched especially due to the space that I have 😭 and not to buy manga just because of the cover and vibes. I also only buy manga from the first volume if it’s a series I know I’ll definitely re read or hasn’t been adapted into an anime yet otherwise I just buy manga from where the season ended if it’s going to take ages to get adapted into an anime

I've collected my fair share of manga over the years in very small quantities, we're talking about 1-3 volumes max a year. Last year, I started collecting more obsessively. The catalyst was a BOGO sales at B&N at the beginning of that year. I used that opportunity to purchase all the volumes of Nana that I didn't own and it was supposed to end there. Then I learned about Rightstufanime which also had a series of summer sales at the time for other series that I enjoyed and bought those. I ended up spending close to $2,000 overall on manga in the last year with much regret. I've sold off two series so far this year, mostly Shonen Jump titles, and plan on selling more in the comings weeks to free up some space. I definitely agree with your point about collecting with a goal, so now I'm only collecting older (& vintage?) series I grew up with and shoujo/josei titles. Y'all def buy second hand if you can, the pages might be a little yellow but the condition is usually pretty good!
Also your local library is your friend, def check out title you're unsure about there first. 👍🏽👍🏽

I was just watching this because I really like watching your videos but then i got to your sponsor part and sighed. I wouldn't have taken that sponsor or promoted it. CharacterAI works by stealing from VAs because they did not give consent for their voices to be used. People can say "oh but the voices are already out there though so it's no big deal" Wrong, the VAs were paid for their gigs, they were not paid for their voices to be used through AI. There are many VAs who have expressed their disappointment on people doing this type of thing, It's really just unethical. If you're an anime and manga fan please respect the artists who make it even down to the VAs and don't support AI.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions. I really appreciate your honesty. I was unaware of the negative light CharacterAI carried, but thank you for educating me on the fact. I will do better in the future to pick and choose sponsorships / partner up with companies on collaborations that don’t support unethical behaviors / values as such. I was also unaware that the VAs were not asked for consent to use their voices, shared their disapproval, as well as not getting paid. I apologize to those who I have disappointed in the process. It was not my intention at all to do so. I am still new to this sponsorships things and I’m learning as I go, I hope you all can understand.

@@patriciasucks Thank you so much for your understanding! A lot of other creators kind of just ignore it even after being told. I'm an artist myself so I have strong opinions on AI XD AI is meant to help people but in recent years it's only been used to steal from things like artist's own work, to a writer's fanfiction off AO3, to yeah a VA's voice. That's how AI is trained, it can't learn on nothing so the way people train it is by feeding it stolen information.
There's a good 4 minute video someone made of this if you'd like to watch, "how AI covers hurt voice actors" - uploaded by the user, k o n p e i

Great tips! I have a manga tracker in my notes app and can confirm it makes it a lot easier to keep track of what im getting (i also use it to remind myself of stuff thats coming out in the future i wanna buy/am considering) and i definetley need to start reading stuff online before i buy it so i know its worth my time. (and if i cant i wait for reviewers i trust to talk about it) Buying slow is also a good one, unless i have gift cards i generally only get at most 4-5 volumes a month, and a lot of months i dont buy anything at all! Id like to offer a few tips of my own:
-omnibuses are your friend! Obviously if you dont like the look/feel of them dont get them, but if it doesnt matter to you theyre a great way to save both money and shelf space in your collection!
-dont be afraid to buy secondhand!! I know were all worried about getting beat up, bad copies but buying stuff secondhand is another great way to save money (collecting is an expensive hobby!) especially if youre looking for a series with hard to find volumes! I like to check reviews for the seller before i buy just to make sure its worth it.
-figure out your own taste! Early on its easy to fall into a trap of buying something youre not really interested because other people said it was good, but figuring out what you like and what youre kind eh on will make it easier to build a collection full of stuff you wanna read! For example, i wanna get more shoujo in my collection (its my main goal atm) and ive noticed that a lot of my favorite shoujo tend to be fantasy or historical series, so stuff in those genres are what im mainly looking at atm, with series in other genres being lower in priority/something i need to read a little of first. Obviously its good to go out of your comfort zone too, but like i said having particular genres you like will make it easier to find stuff you wanna collect and keep!
