  • Welcome to my Hand Plane Foundations course. In this course I'm going to introduce the different types of bench planes and discuss their setup and use, focusing on the planes you’ll need most as a new hand tool woodworker. I’ll cover sharpening the iron, setting up the cap iron, and troubleshooting and tuning the tool up to perform at its best. I’ll finish up by building a modern two tone cutting board from some beautiful North American hardwoods, completely by hand.

Wouldn't the first step be to plane the opposite direction?

A very tight mouth is absolutely an atrocious way to control tareouts. The biggest problem is the huge wear that it causes in the front side of the mouth when the shaving is forced up against it.

The guy who taught me everything I know about woodworking either runs the plane with the tote end kicked out to about a 45 degree angle or grabs a low angle jack that he put a 90 degree beveled iron on (works like a card scraper) or if it's really figured wood, he'll just pull out the card scraper and work down the whole last 32nd of an inch with that.

Thank you for an interesting and informative video.
    I offer these two comments:
1 - Especially in cheap planes, ensure that the cap iron is sharpened to the tip. If not, there's a slight groove or gap behind the front of the cap iron which will fill up with wood particles and the cap iron isn't working.
2 - With apologies, I have found a mouth that's too wide will induce tearing even with the grain.

Another great video. I have found that putting Kent angle on blade helps too.

I haven’t been on the Fine Woodworking podcast, so it couldn’t have been me. My good friend Wilbur Pan was recently on the podcast and they mentioned my name in reference to an article that Wilbur and I co-authored for Popular Woodworking Magazine several years ago. Maybe that’s what you’re referring to?
