  • Cindy Valentina is becoming a grandma! No - she doesn't have any kids yet - her mare Crystal is pregnant ;-) As Valentina has never experienced horse birth, she wants to learn more about breeding and reproduction in horses. Cindy interviewed Crystal's reproduction vet Dr. Carolin von Rosenberg, and there is a lot to learn!

I rode my mare a month after she gave birth and that colt was the easiest to start under saddle. He loved going on trail rides together and would nurse when he needed.

Same here, started bareback at three weeks after foaling and was riding trails by 5-6 weeks that filly is now the best out if the three for being caught, ponied and going through stuff like mud and water

I've heard that it is better to keep the mare in moderate exercise during pregnancy. It makes it easier for her during foaling. In his book, "Training Work Horses, Training Teamsters," Lynn Miller says that pregnant mares are actually easier to train than non-pregnant ("open") mares.

tbh I think not even my mare knows she’s pregnant but also the horses around her! They started treating her a lot nicer and keeping her safe from everything, even other horses

Horses cannot vomit, so the Mares won't get morning sickness when they are in Foal.

Hi Ms. "Cindy," Very nice presentation as you answered a number of my concerns; most of them review, BUT, my main one taken care of as to the amount of work, exercise and the like right after "fertilization." I wasn't aware of the race mares and the intensity of their permitted exercise/strenuous work. You two are a good combo work together Q&A team. Thanks MUCH. mg

I rode my mare ( gently), bareback up until 4 days before she gave birth. As it was a field birth it wasn't witnessed, but both mare and foal did great... I started rideing Moon again at a walk in the field with Yjentia about 2weeks after birth.

If you place your face on your mare's belly to tap for the baby to kick, keep your eye away from flush against mom... a foal's foot almost hit my eye once!

What's going on with society and this whole teenage pregnancy thing? Was she sneaking out? What about the guy aka stallion, thinks he's a stud, was he there for her during the pregnancy, has he been a good father? More and more all of these responsibilities are falling on grandma's.
