    I understand why Bill Walsh hated the shotgun formation. If your QB is that deep at the start of the play, it makes it tougher for the OTs to pass block due to the angles the DE has to the QB. If the QB is under center, the DE must take the inside route to the QB.

    • @jonnydel
      @jonnydel  Рік тому +8

      Yep, from UC there's more variation in depth of drop and mystery to where the final launch point will be. from shotgun, it's one of 2 points.

    • @viliphied
      @viliphied Рік тому

      UC it’s almost all one of 3, and the only one that isn’t there in shotgun is the 3 step, which…pass rush shouldn’t get there on a 3 step anyways

    Thanks for another great breakdown as always!
    I see an OC in Kyle who is still learning what his QB can do, and a QB who is still learning scheme, BUT a QB who mostly has very solid fundamentals and technique, great confidence, and the beginnings of very good scheme and situational football understanding.
    My comparison for Purdy is Drew Brees, another smaller QB who had to play with very good technique and scheme understanding in order to succeed. (Brock is slightly bigger than Drew.)
    It was very good to see examples of Brock learning and making improvements in game. It's clear that he's still learning, BUT he's done incredibly well for a rookie. His floor is very high and his ceiling is probably much higher. Naturally it helps that he is very humble and a serious student of the game, in addition to having a very high football IQ.
    Purdy does not have a big arm, but he has a good mind and understanding, plays with mostly sound technique, usually gets the ball out quickly and accurately, and is ideal for Kyle's WCO/YAC game. Kyle needs a QB who can get the ball out quickly, accurately and on time and Brock is doing that better than Jimmy and much better than Trey. Again, outstanding for a rookie, even though it's clear he has significant room to improve.
    In addition, Brock's outstanding split and cone times are reflected in his often elite (lower body) movement skills, especially escaping pressure. But that movement would be meaningless without understanding of scheme, leverage and situational football, which he also has at unusually high levels. At times he plays like a very good 5 year veteran. Purdy has outstanding pocket awareness and movement.
    I was very glad to see the quick slants used to successfully close out the game. BA's route running has gotten MUCH better this year, and Purdy's quickness and accuracy on timing routes is exactly what Bill Walsh demanded. The slants were also perfectly called in terms of situational football.
    Kyle's playcalling is GREATLY enhanced by having a very competent QB who does those things well in this system: timing and accuracy. That's why Purdy is a great fit for this scheme.
    Brian Griese has visibly improved Purdy's game from college, similarly to how he cut Jimmy's long term interception rate IN HALF. We now have a very good QB coach, even though he had never done it before. BG will continue to improve Purdy's play, and we may have seen some of that improvement in the clips you picked from the Raiders game.
    Purdy also has the ability to scramble and create plays when a play breaks down or is simply well covered. Some of his movement out of the pocket and elusiveness have been elite. He can throw from many arm slots, etc.
    In Trey we hoped for a QB who could learn to execute the designed passing game and create when plays break down. Trey, being highly inexperienced, was still learning both. It seems Purdy, who threw nearly 5x more passes against much better competition in college, may already be far ahead of Trey in both areas. Trey is a better athlete. Brock is a better QB. Not saying Trey can't catch up eventually, but Brock has a major head start in the areas that actually matter for efficient quarterbacking. Brock may end up being the better QB in the long term. He certainly is today.
    P.S. The Raiders have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball, and we did not have much film of Stidham. That's a major part of the reason for their success against our defense. Also many of our players may have had the flu during the game. Many of our defensive players were visibly very slow on the field. I must attribute some of that to the flu going around the locker room. Hopefully the flu will be over soon.

I missed the poll, but please do consider revisiting this issue once people have had a chance to see the new format a bit. I'm betting (hoping!) people will realise it's actually better to do mixed offence and defence after all.

    • @jonnydel
      @jonnydel  Рік тому +2

      I don't plan on running with this formula. The problem was, the offense put up 37 points, a bunch of scoring drives and explosive plays and so there was going to be a lot to cover. The defense also gave up 34 points and so there's going to be a lot to cover on the defensive side of the ball. I was looking at probably having a 40 minute video to get it all in and it would take until late in the week to get it done.
      So, I put a poll out on twitter about it and 80% of the responses were to break it up.

      @@jonnydel Yes, the quick slant was open due to great route running, great timing, and quick execution Classic Bill Walsh WCO.
      Purdy is often doing a GREAT job getting the ball out accurately and on time. He simply needs to do it more consistently and should do so with more experience. He is already very good and can be GREAT in this system. The jury is still out on Trey, mostly due to inconsistent mechanics.
      It's really great that BA has become a great route runner. That was definitely not the case earlier in his career, so he has worked on it and improved a lot. That's on top of having a ton of talent, especially footwork and knowledge of leverage and situational football. BA has turned into a top NFL WR this season (with Purdy).

    I love your breakdowns. I live in the UK and have never played football (all least not the NFL sort!) but have watched the NFL on TV over here ever since the Niners' second SB win. As an ex-teacher, I appreciate what you are trying to get across to your viewers but believe you are missing out some key summaries of what you are actually saying. By dumbing down just a bit, I think your explanations would be even better.
    For example, early on you explain that Kyle learns a lot from how the Raiders react to his 21 personnel package. I kind of follow you but not completely.
    Try breaking it down like this: "When in 21 personnel, the Raiders react by doing [this]. What that means is that Kyle knows every time he does that, they will react [like this], which is turn provides possibilities for him to do X,Y,Z." Sometimes, you don't point out what is obvious to you but which I struggle to connect with what I am seeing. It would take the addition of just a few more simple conclusions to make your analysis even better. Teachers constantly summarise to ensure their pupils don't get lost in complexity - and Kyle's offense is most certainly complex!!! Remember, the NFL is becoming ever more international in scope, so all the help you can give would be appreciated.

      Tom C Exactly!! As a defensive player, Fullback on the field you play run first. Which opens up passing game cause the defense will be in base package.
      If the defense says no we aren't taking the cheese, and goes nickel package, you still have fullback on the field with one less LB. Now you can run the ball having the numbers advantage.

    Starting to worry the micromanager KS has gotten in Purdys head.. looked to me like he was locking in to the primary receiver instead of seeing the field, taking what’s there, and looking to extend plays. Would be a damn shame. Hopefully it’s not a trend

      I think that's probably going to be a learning curve as his playbook expands. The first couple starts his playbook was more condensed than what we had seen under Jimmy. But, to find success past a couple starts that playbook has to expand and so will Brock's ability to digest and execute. He's showing strong traits but there will be a learning curve.

    JD, what is your take on when someone calls a qb a “game manager” or “system qb”?

    • @jonnydel
      @jonnydel  Рік тому +2

      think that's a lazy statement to say they don't play the game they want it played.
      By that statement, Montana was a "game manager" or "system" QB. He ran everything within the system. It wasn't like he was doing a ton of off-schedule or throwing a bunch of alert routes. Brady is a game-manager by the common definition. "Game-manager" is a way to say a guy runs an offense but doesn't make the offense run. Which isn't possible.

    • @jaschlit

      @@jonnydelI’ve always said that, when the talking heads on the TV pass certain qbs off as a “game manager”… it’s like someone will get passed off as a game manager because they are efficient in a particular system. Thanks for your input!

      Jay p West Coast Offense. When ran correctly, it's the most devastating offense around. Especially if you have a Roger Craig/Marshall Faulk/LaDainian Tomlinson/Alvin Kamara/Christian Mccaffrey do it all type RB.

      air raid is what the Kingsbury offense is. Earhardt-Perkins is what NE has run(Las Vegas as well now) which is kind of a catch-all these days. The air-coryell has a lot of good qualities and Norv Turner might be my favorite iteration of the air-coryell. But, if push comes to shove, I'm sticking with a wide-zone based West Coast offense.

    • @gtoramirez
      @gtoramirez Рік тому

      I agree. I think Jimmy would be doing great right now, especially after the Christian Mccaffery addition. I think ultimately, if Purdy can continue playing like this, you have to go with the younger player. Not to mention that the 49ers drafted him, so the 49ers staff gets to take all the credit. With Jimmy, it’s always credit to Bellicheck.
      I do think Purdy has shown he can be better than Jimmy. Given that he’s a rookie, he can possibly progress into a real top QB.
      I’m a big Jimmy G fan, but realistically he’s not the right match for the 49ers. Maybe he can go into a situation like Seattle or New York to improve those franchises. He’s definitely a bridge to build a team for a franchise QB. Sucks for Jimmy because he might have been better if he didn’t sit so long behind Brady. Then again, maybe that’s what helped him become above average?

    One thing im worried about is it seems like Purdy is relying on and throwing to CMC way too much instead of staying focused farther downfield first. Good teams are gonna realize this and figure out how to take him out on plays. This game CMC got the ball on almost half or more of the plays I think I heard someone say. Purdy is doing an amazing job. Just dont want CMC overworked and hurt and Purdy too reliant on him.

    • @gunner-qf9eh
      @gunner-qf9eh Рік тому +1

      Calzman And I pray that happens!!! Cause when the LBs and safeties key in to take CMC away underneath, Kittle and Aiyuk is going to have plenty of room to work the intermediate routes with open throwing lanes for Purdy.
      That's why you get CMC. He is the ultimate decoy in sucking in the defense.
      And remember Deebo is coming back to help Kittle and Aiyuk.
      So please defenses............key in on CMC.
