      @@PrimericanIdolYou didn't ask me but my husband is a recoverING alcoholic. He tells me that without me keeping him in check, he would probably be dead. Having a strong support network helps. Of course, it's not always easy and there are relapses sometimes. So, that's why I don´t say that he is recoverED. I guess it will be a long process. I don't know if we´ll ever put that verb in the past tense but what matters to me is the ING form at least.

      Yeah you never know but I saw it too. It isn’t the frayed hat like someone mentioned or anything appearance wise, though perhaps that does play into it. It’s the mannerisms, excuses and attitude. I can’t really explain it, just that I know how I acted when I was in it. Been sober 9 years but the mindset even when sober can be hard to escape. Walmart does sell alcohol in some states too and he skirted whatever he was buying there when asked.
      Again I don’t know, no one knows and I’m not passing judgement but it is something that came to mind for sure.

      I've certainly had lows at work, but I've never had a job that didn't let me keep candy in my work pouch or let me grab a pop or juice from the sales floor fridge when my sugar is low. Those would fall under reasonable accommodations, but I can't see him winning a suit if he is passing out from lows. That's a major liability for his employer. What if he hits his head on the counter on the way down? Can he not tell when he is going low, or does he just ignore the signs and keep working?
      That being said, I couldn't imagine being Type 1 in the US. I would probably be dead or homeless. Even in Canada it can be fairly expensive, or severely limit you medication options if you aren't covered by work and we pay like 1/10th the price out of pocket. While a CGM would be a life changer for this guy, I understand not being able to afford it. It's $200 a month here. The Government only covers the finger prick testing and not the CGMs. Another example is they only cover Lantus, the older cheaper insulin and not Trisebia, the new better working insulin.

    • @diabilliq
      @diabilliq Рік тому +31

      @@DeadlyTiger it most certainly falls under the ADA in the US for reasonable accommodations, same as the right to use the restroom at any point with no objection...this is also true for schools as well. based upon symptoms, either the guy doesn't realize what's going on with his own body, can't detect when he's dropping (some people have this problem) or he just has poor control. i'd be curious to see what his A1C looks like.

      I appreciate Caleb asking him how often he checks his sugars- as a nurse, having roller coaster highs and lows for extended periods of time (enough that it’s affected him at more than 1 job) is NOT normal. When he said, “I am what is called ______” - I sincerely though he was going “non-compliant diabetic” (as opposed to severe diabetes) which he gives me the strong impression of. 🫤 I sincerely hope he takes better care of himself- I’ve come across a lot of patients that don’t give their diabetes the time, care and concern it demands and if it goes untreated or poorly treated for long enough, diabetes acts like cancer- slowly and horribly eats away and destroys major body parts 😣

The same crappy jobs that were paying my mortgage and bills, paying into my pension, leaving me with savings and allowing me to pay for major purchases in cash. They should have had their finances in order by 60. They're getting about £10,000 per year in state pension, plus any private pension and they pay less tax than me. No way they should be needing to work more than a couple of days a week to cover expenses.

      The way it has worked for me in my working career is that I submit reasonable accomodation paperwork via my employers HR department. Along with that is paperwork from my doctor verifying my condition and explanation as to why the accomodation is needed. If the paperwork is not approved and on file with HR, they essentially are not officially aware of my condition or needs. He’s not stepping up for his mother. He’s an addict whose mother is allowing him to stay with her in exchange for helping her with basic stuff. He has some kind of alcohol or drug problem which is contributing to his unstable blood sugar and constant blackouts. He wasn’t fired for being diabetic, he was fired for being a huge safety hazard and doing nothing to stabilize his A1C. Diabetics are not supposed to have more than one drink per day to prevent fainting/diabetic coma, so if he’s an alcoholic that would absolutely explain why he is constantly fainting to the point where it’s caused him to lose multiple jobs. It’s pretty obvious that his mother is collecting rent from him to either 1) force him to stay employed or 2) she’s worried that he’s going to blow all his money on drugs or alcohol as soon as he gets it so she keeps his “rent“ aside for him, so that he won’t be completely broke if he ever has an emergency.

      I'm not diabetic, but my nephew is (not sure which type), but doesn't having something with sugar help regulate your blood sugar a little bit until you can inject insulin? My sister would give my nephew Skittles or something if we were out and he was low. If that's the case, with management knowing his medical condition, he should have been allowed to keep candy or something in his pocket if he felt his blood sugar going low to pop in his mouth.
      Also, I've worked as a cashier in a busy store, you can flash your checkout light to notify management if there is an issue and they can have someone relieve you for a bit while you take care of stuff like this. What that store did was 100% wrong, but I feel like he could have worked something out with them to handle situations like this before it affected his work like that.

Which is probably why she asks him for rent. I knew someone like this. His mom enabled him, because he was 'trying.' He didn't want to get a fulltime job, so told everyone he HAD to be his moms caretaker, and then gave excuses as to why he couldn't get other work. But would never take steps to try to work around these excuses, ever. These videos light a fire under my a** .... paying down my car debts... no credit card debt other than the 4 credits cards i have to help raise my credit. I use 15% utilization on each card and pay them off every month so no interest or anything on them. Got all my old medical debt removed off my account. And have a HYSA, sinking funds, budget etc...
    Thanks caleb

    As of last week I have 6 months in an emergency fund and I’m now working on paying off my car loan 16 months early just by watching episodes like this that scary the crap out of me. Thank you for my multi-weekly wake up calls and kicks in the butt to keep securing my financial future.

    I've only discovered this channel a week ago but already watched over 20 videos of different guests and every aspect talked about with a side of entertainment has been truly eye-opening. Visuals, stern but careful conversation exchange while acknowledging hardships and pointing out BS are all great. One of the most educational/entertaining channels out there. Road to 1m subs!

    Watching these videos helps me realize, you never know what people are going through.. so whenever you are jealous of someone’s lifestyle or feel like you’re stuck in life, you never know what’s actually going on with them financially. It motivates me to finish up this last debt and change my spending habits! Also helps me realize there’s no point in keeping up with the joneses!

    As a 22yo horticulture graduate myself, I’m making 39k a year/ 18.75/hr and it just seems very underpaid but when you take into consideration of the slow season and the leniency within the industry, it’s well worth it. I’m able to use my phone whenever, the schedule can easily be changed, you’re around natural anti-depressants all day, you stay in good shape, you get to be in the sun all day, not a strict dress code, and the list can go on. He needs to get back in the industry.

      if you get into removing dead trees and stumps, i bet it pays well on the side
      . we had two bradford pears splitting and threatening to fall on the house and another tree growing under the foundation and each removal was something like $1400. that doesn't even include all the money we'll end up paying him for landscaping, mulch and planting new trees.

    This is how my oldest brother lives at almost 50, and why I started maxing out my 401k to get top match, max out my Roth IRA and HSA, my wife's IRA and 403b, 6+ month emergency fund in a HYSA, and a separate regular savings account (4.15%) with Capital One, and regular brokerage account in monthly dividend ETFs since I started my career at 25. Now 37.

      Thanks for the insight on how I should get started only 21 not in a career but have a job started 401k, Roth Ira , and a 1 month emergency fund and some savings
      Any advice you could give would be appreciated

    • @bloodCount8895
      @bloodCount8895 Рік тому +2

      @@robert8311 Figure out your monthly budget and see how much deposable income you have left after bills. Then figure out how much of the deposable income you want to save for the future. It's okay to spend some on going out with friends or buying say a video game or two, but DO NOT rack up credit card debt and start taking out 10%+ car loans. For the 401k whatever the match is from your company go ahead try to contribute to that percent to get the match, it's a 100% return on your money. For the Roth IRA you can do direct deposits into it from your paychecks or with that deposable income you can do a contribution. The general rule is 15% of your own money goes into your retirement (401k/403b, IRAs, and HSA combined), and the company matches are just a bonus on that 15%. If you can't do 15% total, then try to get close to 10%. Every paycheck you should have some sort of deposit into that emergency fund. Even its something low like $50 or $100 per check. At 21 you are in the best years of your life to develop compound interest and funds into your retirement and savings. But it takes patience, positive mind & attitude, and above all discipline on your spending and savings.

      @evanm9565 thank you for the advice my job does 3% match 100% and 50% match 4-5% I'm at 3% now so I think it's a good start and I put 7% into my roth no matter what and only use my credit card at 3% utilization small things here and there and pay it off immediately I think im doing OK for my age but I'm just looking to do better

      I do all that, but that leaves me with more than $10 per pay check for myself, so I really feel like I’m not doing enough.
