My humble submission on pitch understanding by A. R . Rehman. Illayaraja' s chorus always sounded off key because most of those songs were in a rustic rural milieu and he always intended it to be off key. ( Refer to Frontline magazine which did an article on illayaraja as soon as he finished his symphony. I don't remember the the year or month)
Some may feel Krishna’s slap on perception of Music as inappropriate. I feel this kind of elite attitude towards Carnatic music is sad. I also am a Niyogi Brahmin embedded in reverence. But opening up Brahmin exclusive traits is a prerequisite for progress. Even in India people are going to western style universities to learn. All Krishna is pointing out is the exclusive privileges Brahmins enjoyed and how the other casts are subjected to discrimination. A.R.Rehman is a music director. We all enjoy his ingenuity. Exceptions as Yesudas is not enough. Carnatic music need to open its doors wide to let other talented singers to enjoy singing and excelling. I know Krishna cannot sing in Masques, but Christians allow it. It’s music and talent we are looking for . Not elite or cast barriers.
I feel like TMK's view on the direction of film music has a nostalgia bias. To name one album, Cuckoo for instance is about as brilliant as any film album in our cinema history. The composer made no attempts to make the music "catchy". It was pure, beautiful music that was inspired by the movie's story. Good music is still being made by the composers of today. Conversely, terrible music was made in those golden years as well. But we tend to remember only the nice music, we've mostly forgotten the mediocre music of the past. Today's music is just different in its sound, because of the influence of what is popular around the world, like dubstep and what not. Does he really believe when the youngsters of today become older, they won't look back fondly at the music they grew up with, and celebrate the people who composed it?
TMK seems to go out of the way to choose unnecessary and avoidable adjectives and adverbs that makes his expressions unnecessarily complex even to bring out a simple point ! I'd appreciate a simpler approach to such a simple subject !
Bary expecting more Interviews like this from musicians and other film celebrity..
Great work - kudos!
Can we have more such interviews with people not directly associated with the Film Industries, but with the south indian art movement in general?
I am not a musician. This interview opened up a rare perspective of this Art that elevated my appreciation for the Devine aspect of Humanity
