    Absolutely brilliant Matt. It just proves that we should never be afraid to take on these so called "difficult jobs" ourselves. I once had my Bongo fail MOT on a brake imbalance across the back axle due to an oil leak from the driveshaft outer seal. The garage wouldn't do it for me referring me to a commercial repairer, I ordered the new seals and did it in a couple of hours on my drive. Garage guy was a bit quiet when I took it for the retest telling him I'd done it myself.

    I wish I could say I'm glad I have a manual Freelander, but replacing the clutch slave cylinder is going to make that job look relatively easy...
    As for rusty bolts, nowadays I grease every bolt that was difficult to remove before refitting it. It might not be the right thing to do, but I've never had anything fall off. The battery clamp was one that I was particularly glad I did. Despite its rusty head being between two sizes now, it's still quite easy to get off. 😎

    home mechanics shouldn’t be intimidated by gearboxes, if competent tackling engine repairs, then gearbox isn’t really any more of a stretch. more hassle if just using jack stands, easier with a quickjack hydraulic lift or better. Valve bodies and solenoids, gearbox oil and filter changes are pretty straightforward. If you have a Land Rover then a RAVE workshop manual on disc from ebay for a few pounds is an essential. Good to see a gearbox fault being tackled 👍

    Still Land Rover's best selling vehicle in the modern era, I quit on mine. I went through two and nearly three JF506E's. I had the first year they imported to the US. Still the most maddening timing and belt adjustments on the MG/Rover KV6. It kind of amuses me that the first Elise's had the inline four cylinder of the K engine before switching to Toyota's. I still have mine and I have been considering breaking it for spares for someone who needs them. The correct ATF is absolutely essential and few people would actually put the correct Texaco spec ATF in them, and in the early 2000's a fluid and filter change you did yourself required $400-$800 in Fluid and Filter depending on the dealer. If you want into an auto parts store the idiots 99.9% of the time- they would just hand people Universal Import Fluid and that stuff killed the trans in 5k miles.

    Nice job! Looked like no fun at all. Those quotes you were given are a great illustration of the racket being run by some dealers/workshops...a two-hour book time job and 120 quid in parts for 650 is bad enough, but 2500? Daylight robbery...hope it feels nice to have saved yourself all that moolah!

    • @d2factotum
      @d2factotum Рік тому

      I have a suspicion that the garage which quoted £2500 was basically saying "Nah, we ain't doing that for love or money" but without actually coming right out and saying so--they'd know no-one was going to pay that for a job on a car worth £1500.

    • @ProdigalPorcupine

      @@d2factotum Unfortunately, those sort of fees are par for the course in the UK for automatics. Many if not most mechanics it seems simply don't want to learn about them because they don't need to.
