      Great video and videos. I would highly suggest you lower the background music volume or even better get rid of it for most of the video. I find background music to be distracting and unnecessary. I firmly believe people want to hear you talk/get information and NOT hear generic background music.

      These videos don't even touch on the topic of how Standard Oil only existed in it's monopolistic form due to government protections in the first place. It is a complete and utter myth that lassiez faire/free market ever existed in the US. The US in the 20th century has been more free market than the 19th century, and that's really saying something.

    So in short a monopoly will only fall to either a:
    Involving new capital
    B:
    Incometence of its management.
    A is not axiomatic, neither is B.
    My take from this is that monopolies are only prevented if the expansion of the market is faster than capital holders ability to consolidate.

    • @CallMeEzekiel
      @CallMeEzekiel  4 роки тому +37

      I'd like to add two points. First is that you're forgetting about technology. Inevitably the monopoly will become obsolete.
      Second is that while neither A nor B are axiomatic, they're both very close to axiomatic. In regard to A, unless something horrible is going on like a civil war, economies nearly always expand. In regard to B, management will have to change as people retire and/or die. Each change in the management is another chance for incompetent leadership to take over.
      I hope this helps!

      @@CallMeEzekiel Technological innovation, I think is covered under expanding markets. And so far experience indeed seems to suggest markets will keep expanding.
      On the point of bad leadership, I am not so certain.
      Most ventures nowadays have become sufficiently decentralised that "bad leadership" by a single person, or an aging board is less likely to harm them in a significant manner, and they are heavily incentivised to keep doing so.
      And this is just the purely logical points disregarding any ethical consideration.

    I loved the video as I learnt a lot about how companies use strategy, but it basically comes all to the only way to break a company is to either force it into bankrupcy, which Shell and the Royal oil company failed to do, or ask the government to split the company.

    • @CallMeEzekiel
      @CallMeEzekiel  4 роки тому +16

      Bear in mind that bankrupting the monopoly isn't the point. The point is to prove that it's possible to compete with a monopoly, thus removing its monopoly status and creating a more competitive market. All that bankrupting the monopoly would do is create a new monopoly.

    Wait a second, did your french countryball just say steam cars are good for the environment?
    If I'm not mistaken, steam engines run on coal, and according to Wikipedia they were less effective.
    Gasoline engines on the other side run on industrial waste, and if they were more effective, then that's also a plus.
    Imagine if a company today managed to turn food waste from super-markets into fuel, and somehow it also beat gasoline in terms of efficiency. Because from what I've heard, that's what gasoline was like to the late 19th, early 20th century.
    That said, if you can run the steam engine from something other than coal it could potentially be something.
    (EDIT) I should probably clarify that neither is good for the environment, but assuming motorized transport is a must then I'd probably go with petrol-gas over water-gas any day, assuming the numbers I read are correct and no other factors are at play.

    This was a really interesting video and I found your whole dive into it really cool. I'm confused about the conclusion however. You say use government intervention how I feel mockingly. But in the title of Royal Shell I feel there is a contradiction. It was a company backed by the interests of the British and Dutch governments. These companies are connected to their home countries governments and often use governmental power to broker deals that were used to defeat standard. Such as the Dutch company using stock that could only be controlled by dutch citizens to prevent take over from standard. I'm confused how you can make the conclusion that the free market took down standard when the control of stock is limited from completely private stock to stock that can only be owned by one specific kind of citizen. The only way to even do something like this I believe is to use governmental legislation to limit who can buy certain stock. It seems to me that shell used both free market tactics and government intervention to limit standards growth. Maybe there is something I just dont understand however.
