  • Join Team Roam on the sailing adventure of a lifetime. Sailing the World on ROAM a Home Built 48 foot Catamaran.
    This one is quite different for a SSR clip. Our new friend Bobby joins us for our biggest sail yet from New Zealand to Tahiti. He uses the opportunity make a video about what its like for us to live and sail full time as a couple on a sailboat.
    Liss and I would like to thank Bobby for sailing with us and making a video of something that we could never have done ourselves. Too shy!!
    Cheers
    Mick

    Love the new format and being able to get a much better feel for your personalities and the actual day to day situations (Weather, Speed, etc) you're sharing with us. Way more interesting and involving! I can't tell you how impressed I am that you built your own Spirited cat. Would love to hear more technical tidbits thrown in on why you made certain design/equipment choices for your boat. Currently considering a Schionning Arrow 1500 or Spirited 48.

      Nice one Cyprus!! Cheers for the message. If you wanted to know anything else about the boat or build questions etc feel free to drop me an email at sailsurfroam@gmail.com I have been doing quite few calls lately with people looking to take on a build project like ours! Mick

    G'day Team Roam, great to see some more of your travels. It must be an amazing feeling sailing the ocean and making landfall in a boat fabricated with your own hands, it is a wonderful achievement . With trimming the assy you could try a tweeker about amidships to pull the sheet down a bit, this can change the shape a little and help stabilise it. as a rule of thumb we use a tweeker when sailing broad and when we are shy it become redundant as the clew comes further aft. So it's worth playing around with it to see what works best on Roam. cheers Russell and Malene.

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому +1

      Hey Russell and Malene, Hope the hot weather is not making it too itchy in the shed!!! Your time is coming fast for making land falls on your hand built boat!!!! Cheers for the tweaker tip. Ill let you know how I go next time I have a play with it. So far I have set one up only once when we cross hauled the tack over to the windward bow as a test. Need some outriggers like the VOR65's!!! Mick

      P.S. did you ever sail a 3 Peaks against Deguello? They posted just above and have a BWR boom as well!

    • @rustie4242
      @rustie4242 6 років тому

      Yes, I think the last time we did the 3 Peaks we raced against Deguello, Big Wave Rider and Storm Bay, it was a tuff race....

    Tapping on your hull is more likely to attract the dolphins. Sound travels better through water and that's where they're listening.

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому +2

      sometimes they seem to like it and some times if we tap or drum on the hull they bolt. Guess everyone has different tastes in music??

    Great episode guys. It still seems strange seeing my home port in videos like this one, even the boat in Opua using our mooring in the background when you left, 'New Zealand Maid'.

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому +1

      Nice one. We will keep an eye out for the Maid this summer! Just about ready for sail back from Tonga now, Mick

      Keep an eye out for me on the same mooring that NZ Maid was on. We are launching in a week, after my father having spent 27 years building our boat, Kauai Uhiwai. Unfortunately Dad passed away in February last year, so did not get the chance to sail her. Long story to share in person. Catch you in Opua sometime.
      Cheers.

    Glad to find you guys, looking forward to the experience. Wonder what would happen if you could find audio from some dolphins which would attract other dolphins, underwater microphone recorded, then playing back on the underwater speaker all sailors have, lol Incidentally, you make it look so easy ....

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому +2

      would be interesting thats for sure. I'm sure researchers have done it. We were tossing around a whale deterrent along those lines as its quite common for yachts to hit whales when sailing doing alot of damage to both parties...

      BWR - Guessing, Bruce Arms - Big Wave Rider? Anyway, great boom, so easy to drop the main into. ROAM looks the same design.

  • @terrygriffiths8481
    @terrygriffiths8481 6 років тому

    Yeah, great to see you back out sailing. Re your question about the kite - a pole with just a bit of downhaul wouldn't have helped stop the wave roll knocking the wind out of it?

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому +1

      Hey Terry yeah a pole would likey allow the tack to float independent of the boat a bit and soften it all but we dont carry one. Would need to be about 8m long so would be a monster.. Roam can be pretty twitchy when there is a residual slop and no wind to power it up and keep the leward hull pressed a bit. Cheers Mick

    Thats some fast sailing. How many days nz to french polynesia? You havent gone to Tahiti yet?

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому

      11D 14hr on the water from Opua to Tubuai. Average SOG dropped from under 8 knots to 7.9 on the last night. We have the sail quiver to keep us moving at good averages in strong and light air now. Tahiti was our aim for the season and we ended up near 4 months there. Currently in Tonga on the way back to NZ for summer. Mick :)

    • @superwag634
      @superwag634 6 років тому

      fantastic. ive been to those places too. Sailed around Bora Bora which is my favourite island and also Tonga Vavau. Watch those reefs around there. It must be time to get out of there very soon as its almost cyclone season starting. Good luck with the passage to NZ. It can get a bit crazy near top of NZ with the westerly winds.

    • @SailSurfROAM
      @SailSurfROAM  6 років тому

      Yeah we will hit the road soon. Already a month into the season... Coming from Tasmania we are pretty used to reading the weather South of 30 and 40 degrees but not planning on learning the hard way of how to read the forecasts for the tropics in summer... Cheers
