    When my wife and I visited Aus and NZ we learned a lot about the Maoris and Kunes they raised. So fast forward to about 5 years ago we got 3 Kunes which we wanted to breed but they never took and ended up getting very fat. They went in the freezer. Today, May 16, 2024 I brought home 1 boy and two girls just weaned. Here's hoping I do it better this time and thank you for your advise! Cheers from Staple Station in Muskegon, MI

    I am so thankful for this video! Really great information. We just picked up our 2 kune kunes today and you taught us so much we didn’t yet know.

    I think I'm still leaning toward goats, but I've been entertaining the idea of pigs as well. This looks like a good breed, and this is great info.

      I love my goats too, but they are totally different to the pigs. The kunes are a great breed, I don't think I would have any other pigs because of the kids, these pigs are so gentle and friendly

    Thank you. How would you recommend reversing dependence on all-stock feed? I have two Kune-pot belly mix, an adult female and a juvenile male. They seem to ignore the high grass growing around them.

      They will always opt for the easy (yummy) option. If you reduce their ration they will get hungry and look elsewhere. Personally I would halve what they were getting every week for a month. We still give ours a handful to remind them to come when we call them!

    The best video on Kunekunes! I wish this was out when we first got our Kunekunes. We now have a blind fat pig who is on a diet:( Any ideas?

      Aww thank you. Overweight pigs need to be just fed grass, or hay over the winter, and encouraged to move around a bit more, try calling them over for scratches a few times a day. It takes time, but it is possible to help them loose it. Avoid high starch foods like grains and breads totally, and limit fruit and starchy veggies significantly until she is in better shape. Slow and steady is the name of the game. Let me know how you get on xx

    How do you tell if a pig is getting enough to eat? It sounds like they can demand food all the time (squeal), or are many relatively quiet if they're full just grazing?

      It is a lot like raw feeding dogs, watch their weight over a couple of weeks, if they are getting overweight then reduce what you are feeding, if they aren't maintaining condition, they need more. Not much of a science, but it works!

    I raise meat rabbits, can you feed kunekune a portion of the rabbit pellet? And do they actually eat hay or will they turn their nose up at it lol? Thx!

    • @FantailValleyHomestead
      @FantailValleyHomestead  2 роки тому

      Non medicated rabbit pellets would be OK, but not as their whole diet :-) They also will eat the guts and meat scraps, but probably not the skins. Mine eat both hay and straw when they are hungry, but not if it is wet or soiled or if there is more interesting food on offer.
