One of the things growing up Catholic was that there wasn't a distinction between mystical beliefs and the teachings of Christ applied to daily life. It was assumed that we just knew the mystical aspects as truth. Even calling it "mysticism" was never done; anything that implied that mystical beliefs was anything beyond normal was not included in our education.
Same, I found it super interesting to see mysticism separated from the Church. It makes sense for the purpose of finding as many examples of it as possible because of its relevance in a lot of evangelical and early Christian practices during the revolution. The growing quality and documentation of your essays are juste incredible. The choice of topics is also always relevant and this one is a masterpiece. I really love your work and way of thinking. Thank you very much Horses ❤
Very well done Michael. I am a Catholic seminarian, and I'm always a little wary with people speaking online about Christian topics without being well informed. This is not the case here, you've done your research and it is a well-written and presented essay. There's so much detail I'd like to go in on, as the mystical and spiritual traditions of east and west are very interesting to me; at least the more normative elements - I'll leave the more fantastical elements to those much holier than I. The prayer tradition of monks of east and west is fascinating, the sayings of the desert fathers, and writers like Saint John Cassian, and Saint John Climacus are brilliant; one tradition that begins there in the deserts of Egypt and is later written about in the Russian Orthodox Classic "the way of a pilgrim" is the "Jesus prayer" - a repetitive prayer using the Holy Name of Jesus, seeking to pray constantly, and take every thought captive. Through translation, this has now become very popular in the west, and is one of my preferred ways of praying. From the western monastic tradition, the practice of Lectio Divina, or Sacred Reading, has also exploded in popularity; contemplative reading of Scripture, the Gospels in particular, which seeks to renew one's Mind by directing one's thoughts and actions towards the Word, who is Jesus Christ. It is, as St. Jerome says: "ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ." Regarding those parts of spirituality that go beyond the natural, general accepted wisdom is that being too desirous of mystical visions is a good way to become over-credulous and be deceived by the devil, it is why the Church is generally cautious with each case, even cases the Church accepts as genuine, such as Saint Padre Pio, who, though later declared a saint and his stigmata seen to be genuine, was silenced for a long time because of superiors being cautious of deceit.
I enjoyed this video! As a Catholic, the mystical side of faith is sometimes hard to fathom, even with intense introspection when praying. Sometimes, reliance on intellect alone is insufficient, especially when explaining these phenomena. I think it's great to balance the intellect with mysticism.
My grandpa started floating in the air and seriously shaking, after the hour long video was over I simply looked in the room where he was and he was already in the room laying on the ground, so still he wasn't even breathing! Thank you for helping me.
You... as a non-believer in Jesus.. nailed it in first 5 mins. And I'm writing this in the 5 mins.. your research is very good up to this point. I must admit I thought twice about clicking on this video. If it started this good I image it will be a great video. So I'll be back to type more in 40 mins or so.😅
Since we are talking about mysticism, I wish to add that eastern christian theology (Orthodox theology especially) has the idea of theosis, Or deification in english. Which to put in simple words is a belief that one's spiritual aim should be total unity with God on a literal level and as the bible describes it as "participate in the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4) This very mystic belief is not limited to Eastern mystics, it was actively discussed by much of eastern theologians like Athanasius of Alexandria and the alexandrian/coptic fathers, John Chrysostom and The cappadocian fathers and so many more and is considered a core part of Orthodox theology and spirituality. Athanasius of Alexandria even said "God became man so men may become gods" And theosis is seen as Salvation. it is what christ came to achieve and what he gave us, especially since eastern christians reject the western understanding of original sin. Theosis to eastern christendom is sanctification of the soul by the holy spirit, acceptance of christ and unity with the father, to ultimately partake in the divine nature literally.
I admire your creative output and effort in bringing aesthetically pleasing content to the table! I love all of your videos but you truly outdid yourself with the high quality and length this time. Thank you!💌
I am not catholic, but i am ex-christian and a diagnosed schizophrenic. I want to say i think there are many ways to categorize a person like me, based on the culture i might happen to live in. Lots of us in many many cultures are misunderstood and mistreated. Even now in the world of the dsm, things are not perfect. Where I'm personally able to have livable level of wellbeing,, others without healthcare or diagnosis face some of the roughest times in America. schizophrenia exists in 1% in total human pop maybe 20% in homeless americans. We still are not regularly trusted for our needs and opinions, and almost no one here is given any "spiritual" framework to heal and understand the patterns we face from the inside out, only to medicate and make it go away so we can go on laboring. Survival is dictated on ability to hold work, not to have low suffering.
This is so saddening to hear. Thanks for your informative comment, I personally have a schizophrenic friend who is in jail right now and its definitely something that you wish other people could understand that are not as close to them or you. I’ll keep this in mind most definitely
although we have come a long way (especially in the last 50-70 years) it is disheartening to know this kind of thing happens. i have a fully funcional schizophrenic friend (a good friend btw) who is a catholic (i'm not, but i have a good relationship with catholicism, let's say) and i do believe it's one of the few religions which has been able to deal (or cope) with it. not perfectly by any means, but this things move slow. i mean SLOW SLOW. anyway, thanks for the insight, i hope the best for you. PS: i think the percentage of schizophrenia in the homeless pop is actually bigger, is just undereported. not only in the US, but around the world in general. i'm not from the US but i've work with homeless populations and drug use being a trigger for the underlyinf condition is for keeping this number high up, even in places with free healthcare (like where i live). society in general is not able to keep up with it, we've been failing these people. let's hope this changes as quick as possible.

Makes me wonder where Dante got the idea that, if a person is extraordinarily wicked, their soul can be taken to Hell before they are deceased and a demon is sent to occupy their body.
I mean, I think Dante's works can be characterised as fiction based on religion rather than actual religious beliefs (whether you think religion itself is fictitious isn't relevant, since back then religion was what everyone perceived as reality). So his work isn't based on actual catholic beliefs or practices. A lot of people even call his works religious fanfiction lol
Twelve years of Catholic school education was a good way to keep me ignorant of my own faith. When something didn't make sense, or religious instruction came to its inevitable paradox, my instructors would speak down to us children, and handwave it all as "Divine Mystery". There was never an attempt to explain how or why, these mysteries existed, mostly because I rightly suspected the adults had come to the end of their knowledge. There's a reason a lot of seminarians leave their schools newly minted atheists. I am thankful for UA-cam teaching me more of the HOW the faith I was raised in came to be. It's all a lot deeper and interesting than the surface level faith of most Christian instruction I have ever received.
IMO: Do not obsess over something you desire; do not fall into despair or melancholic despondency; do not let your estimation of your faculties convince you that you have ultimate knowledge of reality; do not allow anger or indignation to lead you into harming or condemning others or yourself; do not become consumed by the sense or conviction that you deserve what others have; do not numb your heart through bodily pleasures or the acquisition of possessions; and do not keep from others what would benefit them that you have and do not need. Call it demonic obsession, possession or just plain neurosis (to differentiate between psychosis, which is not anyone’s fault), avoiding these mistakes and admitting them and forgiving yourself when you fail is how to almost certainly avoid it.
I love mysticism it's so amazing esp as someone who was an atheist my entire life when you have these mystical experiences it blows your mind apart can never see the world the same way again
When i was baptized into the Orthodox Church the Priest first used a exorcism prayer over me and others who got baptized that day. Even when i had a haunting the Priesr offered to come to the home but first i had to buy Icons of the Holy Mother and Christ to see if that worked and it did thankfully
I've found "get out of house and don't ever come back" to be pretty effective and to the point. I was raised a catholic, knew some priests who performed exorcisms and were willing to talk about it. The general consensus is that formal ritual isn't as important as faith and conviction and courage.
My mom always said that announcing loudly to the room “If you’re not of god then get the fuck outta my house.” Works for her. That’s what she’d do when I had nightmares as a kid
Mad respect for admitting this video isn't really about exorisms early on. I recognize the need for attention grabbing topics and the way you blended from the promised material to what you really wanted to talk about in an honest way was well done. I probably wouldn't have watched a video promising discussion on Christian Mysticism but your presentation and respect towards it had me more interested in mysticism than exorcism.
Jack saint is a solid UA-cam essayist who does the same kinda thing. I don’t really consider it clickbait since you get more than you thought you’d get
There’s a lot missing from this video though. Exorcism isn’t just Christian. It’s way older than Christianity. There is also extreme abuse done in the form of exorcism at times. Taking this seriously and being respectful of people doesn’t just look like discussing one religious paradigm and refusing to examine it skeptically/critically for fear of offending.

Your clear jump to insult the replier shows you are weak in faith and easily wounded by fact. Sounds to me like your religion isn’t really the place of stability that people claim it to be. Usually, trying to find true Christian lore in non-christian "scholars" is a sisyphean task, this video is a pleasant surprise. The Lord could truly use your skill ;)
Malachi Martin says in his book "Hostage to the Devil" that a possessing demon can "perfectly possess" someone if he gives his will entirely over to the demon. That person loses his force of volition, his will...perfectly.
I've always been fascinated and deeply enjoy stories, horror, and similar that are based in Christian Mysticism, but I never understood that it was called that. My brain could only interpret it as "Christian Lore" or "Christianity as a mythology", both which aren't very respectful to the actual faith, but I do think are kinda funny. Love the vid, thanks for making it!

Horses I respect your honesty with your final conclusion holding truth in it, and giving the viewers something to reflect upon. Very good video format, and very informat video on the subject. Good audio. Good editing. Clear voice. Kept me as a viewer very interested in wanting you to say more about the subject. And you kept to keeping a respective tone & choice in words to educate individuals about said subject rather than bashing or being preachy about it. I say this as a Christian who loves seeing an informative format to the faith/other subjects to cultures/beliefs etc etc. Allowing people to see/understand the other side without the influence of complete one sided prespective influencing the viewer. May you have a good day & keep up the good content & remember doing something out compassion can be just as good with motivation.
I love to see how you take an interesting concept te enter into another and develop them both in fantastica ways. This video essays are damn well done. It´s awesome how you can take one´s attention in such a charming way, that it´s difficult to distract and not learn the knowledge that you spread arounde the whole video.
As someone who was raised in this particular christian strain (but no longer subscribes to it) I do really appreciate your withholding of commentary from the given subject matter. There is a sacredness and a terror to these concepts that few will ever know, but the temporary withholding of modern scientific skepticism perhaps instills this into the mind of those raised in atheism. < also one small note: the mystics are a small group of individuals throughout Christian history that were blessed/ cursed with these experiences not a specific sect of christianity. Some groups believe in their authenticity and some do not but none define themselves as “Mystics”. A mystic would be an individual ie. Padre Pio as declared by the church.>
I got baited into learning about christian mysticism with the promise of spooky exorcism, and tbf I can't complain! A beautiful book I encountered in the past is "The practice of the presence of God", by brother Lawrence. It speaks of a relatively simple and straightforward practice about remaining in contact with God throughout the day. I recommend it to anyone interested in such matter, it's not a heavy read either.
I've heard exorcism is what they did to people in psychosis or epileptic fits. Having known people with these disorders i cant help but feel saddened by these stories
In Catholicism, before undergoes an exorcism, he/she must go to see the doctor first. Only when the medical treatments are ineffective, the church will do an investigation on his/her case. And only when it was established that he/she need exorcism, does a priest do an exorcism. Most of the case, the priest only gave the prayer of deliverance ,(minor exorcism). Very few are treated with full blown exorcism.
@@melissalisaandrean6803I do love how the Catholic Church, of which I am a part of, checks for rational explanations of anything that is claimed to be supernatural. That way, genuine miracles and demonic possessions have actual credibility

Jerome says: "ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ."
Regarding those parts of spirituality that go beyond the natural, general accepted wisdom is that being too desirous of mystical visions is a good way to become over-credulous and be deceived by the devil, it is why the Church is generally cautious with each case, even cases the Church accepts as genuine, such as Saint Padre Pio, who, though later declared a saint and his stigmata seen to be genuine, was silenced for a long time because of superiors being cautious of deceit.
I enjoyed this video! As a Catholic, the mystical side of faith is sometimes hard to fathom, even with intense introspection when praying. Sometimes, reliance on intellect alone is insufficient, especially when explaining these phenomena. I think it's great to balance the intellect with mysticism.
Channel might be horses but the content is goated.

Since we are talking about mysticism, I wish to add that eastern christian theology (Orthodox theology especially) has the idea of theosis, Or deification in english. Which to put in simple words is a belief that one's spiritual aim should be total unity with God on a literal level and as the bible describes it as "participate in the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4)
This very mystic belief is not limited to Eastern mystics, it was actively discussed by much of eastern theologians like Athanasius of Alexandria and the alexandrian/coptic fathers, John Chrysostom and The cappadocian fathers and so many more and is considered a core part of Orthodox theology and spirituality.
Athanasius of Alexandria even said "God became man so men may become gods"
And theosis is seen as Salvation. it is what christ came to achieve and what he gave us, especially since eastern christians reject the western understanding of original sin. Theosis to eastern christendom is sanctification of the soul by the holy spirit, acceptance of christ and unity with the father, to ultimately partake in the divine nature literally.
Me as a romanian christian orthodox couldn't have said it better. Was looking for this kind of addition in a comment :D
Men do not become gods.
God acts thru the heart of man, that is how we become participate
Good how you changed between capital G and a lower case g, important!
@@spacemanbill9501
St Athanasius did not mean it literally. We become deified, almost like Christ "The God-Man"

WELL that is very interesting
I feel like everything you list here can be categorized under the heading of "keeping your head". Things can be simple if we allow them to be.
Keeping my heart. In these matters, my head simply becomes my heart’s apologist. The heart is primary, for me at least.
this is comforting, thank you
I love mysticism it's so amazing esp as someone who was an atheist my entire life when you have these mystical experiences it blows your mind apart can never see the world the same way again
When i was baptized into the Orthodox Church the Priest first used a exorcism prayer over me and others who got baptized that day. Even when i had a haunting the Priesr offered to come to the home but first i had to buy Icons of the Holy Mother and Christ to see if that worked and it did thankfully
As a Catholic mystic, this is to good. Please make more of these Catholic mystic videos
I've found "get out of house and don't ever come back" to be pretty effective and to the point.
I was raised a catholic, knew some priests who performed exorcisms and were willing to talk about it.
The general consensus is that formal ritual isn't as important as faith and conviction and courage.
Jaja, it's an old belief where I live that you can banish ghosts by harshly insulting them, thankfully I haven't had the opportunity to try.
My mom always said that announcing loudly to the room “If you’re not of god then get the fuck outta my house.” Works for her.
That’s what she’d do when I had nightmares as a kid
Superb my friend. So necessary and powerful, in such confusing times. Thank you🕯
Mad respect for admitting this video isn't really about exorisms early on.
I don’t really consider it clickbait since you get more than you thought you’d get
Thank you for treating this subject seriously.

Having seen an exorcism for a guy that end up being epileptic, it is sad.
