  • Documentary series, this episode was first transmitted in 2001; Charles Hazlewood talks to Karlheinz Stockhausen about his life and work. The German composer is shown in rehearsal and performing his work. Known for his ground-breaking work in electronic music the ‘Papa of Techno’ discusses his influence on artists including Björk, Grateful Dead and Portishead. Stockhausen also reflects on the importance of dreams on his work and recalls the dream that led him to create one of his best-know pieces: Helikopter-Streichquartett. The composition requires the four members of a string quartet to each perform in a separate helicopter whilst circling in the sky.

His music is not my cup of tea, but my goodness he's a very creative and innovative person. A real genius! When i heard him say that he wanted to compose music for the 24 hours in a day and have 24 rooms dedicated to each hour so that people could listen to them at each hour of the day, that made me realize how much of a genius he is.

Such a wonderful documentary. Thank you so much for uploading this.
It’s such a pity that such wonderful resources are typically unavailable outside of the UK.

It infuriates me… my own issue is not being to access any ice hockey from the US legitimately. I know the tricks like vpns but I don’t see why I should use that. The other reason I’ve given up posting new content is the copyright blocking UA-cam does: I’ve always subscribed to the mantra that if you can hear it on the radio as a “broadcast” it should be ok to share. Being digital is immaterial when someone could have recorded on tape…

I think that Stockhausen is the greatest composer the world has ever produced. I mean, his music is just so unique and innovative; it is literally like nothing else I have ever heard!

Yes, the greatest composer to walk the earth. As he himself proclaimed, he came from Sirius.

Wrong. If he was the greatest composer the world has ever produced, a lot more people around the world would be listening to his music and playing his music. You know, like Bach and other great masters.

@@dvforever A composer being the greatest doesn't depend on how many people listen to his music

    • @dvforever

@@benaraujomusic That's not the only thing greatness depends on. But it's certainly one of them. Otherwise greatness becomes a random subjective feeling.
A composer's penetration of the culture and of time and history is very important. How many people play a composer's music at home, perform it in public, record it, share it, talk about it, write books and make videos about it. That's all part of the definition of greatness.

Surely he can't be Sirius. All jokes aside, he was a genius. I wish people would get used to the idea. The problem I think is that we haven't caught up with the sensibility of our own time, it's too painful.
