How to Install Speedplay Cleats

- Quick video on installing Speedplay cleats for road shoes. I am putting speedplay cleats on my new Specialized S-works 7 Road Shoes and I learned a few things while struggling through this process. Throwing speedplay cleats on these shoes should have taken about 10 minutes, but one of the threads on the base plate was not ready for action. So I had to take off the speedplay cleat 3x before I finally got everything right. One big protip is to not overtighten the small phillips screws as you install as that pinches the spring mech (I think) and makes it very difficult to engage threads. Soooo when installing speedplay cleats, I encourage you to slow down and get it right the first time.
Since this video I have ridding indoors with the new s-works 7 shoes and to be honest, I do not like them at all. I am thinking I will be selling these on ebay soon. They just hit my ankle and foot ALL WRONG. I'll likely go back to sidi despite the weight difference. Le Sigh!

I love racing and riding bikes, so this is really about having fun. Doing these Racecast videos can be time-consuming, but mostly I like it. It's only fun if I know someone else cares. Subscribing helps me know...thanks!

Most realistic clear installation video I’ve ever seen l😂 Thank you for keeping it real!
I appreciate that!
Thanks for sharing. I have an installation tip I'd like to share with anyone installing their own Speedplay Zero cleats. FORGET the damn torque wrench!! Using mine-and tightening to the recommended level-caused my Zero cleats to be nearly impossible to clip into. Do this instead: Get some red threadlock, use your plain phillips head screwdriver (NOT a T-handled one), and go around the four screws again and again to make sure all four of them have been evenly turned beyond that first "resistance" bump that's designed into the screws. If you go tighter than this you're going to ruin what is a fairly easy cleat entry process. I've installed almost a dozen Speedplay X pedals over the past decade and used this technique with no problems, and I should have used it on my first pair of Zero cleats. Also, I found the perfect lube in 3-in-One's PTFE lubricant (available at Amazon and elsewhere) after using sprays for years (just because I had that kind in my garage already). The drip applicator helps you get the lube exactly where it needs to be.
already got beat up trying to install them onto the sidi shoe.....the hardest part was the walkable cleats at 4:05sec I got stuck on that but I will fix it after work.
Hope it worked out!
A few words about how to set the float limit screws may be helpful too...👍
I've still never used actual road shoes, just MTB SPDs and of course flats.
Nice. I like that strategy.
brian, i just bought these cleats with shimano shoes and the store installed the cleats on the shoe. when i went home to try them, i could not clip in. what the hell did they do wrong. the spring on the clip does not budge. it is horrible. i went from mountain bike cleats to these for an improvement and they suck.
My guess is that the left/right is mixed up.
James Tepedino I suspect the 4 small black screws were done up too tight. It should only be 2 Newton’s. If these screws are done up too tight, the spring won’t work
Not sure on the weight but I just got the Specialized Torch 3.0 and they have a padded tongue :). Might be worth trying...Specialized also makes insoles that really help complete the fit.
Welp. Those shoes were pretty but they didn’t jive with my feet. Sold em and order some sidi shoes. They were so pretty though
I’m having problems getting the cleat cover to snap over the rest of the assembly. It won’t snap down. Any tips? Thanks
really phillips
It will be more helpful if the camera is aim correctly instead of guessing what you doing. 🙂
Sorry - I'm a work in progress my friend - good feedback, I do appreciate it.
