Thank you for checking out this episode of Lock Picking Home School! Today we are going to focus on techniques to recover from overset pins and with a little bit of practice you will be able to implement them and start to save a lot of time on your opens!
The two concepts described are the “zipping technique” to help get overset pins to drop back down and “careful tensioning.” The concepts are powerful tools you can use to start to improve at single pin picking and I encourage you to share your techniques in the comments below!

Wow, thank you! Was messing with this lock for hours, got it open twice on luck, now I actually know what to listen to and feel for, and can get it open in under 30 sec. So thank you!
Useful vid for beginners :-) As I get more experienced, I find that I instinctively release a little tension every time I detect an overset to drop it back. I used to get really frustrated by overseas, but with time, you just take them in you stride :-)
Thank you for the kind words!
I like the zipping thing. I also can get oversets to fall by "tickling" the pins with sort of a rounded half diamond. I've also practiced turning standard pick over and deliberately over-setting All the pins and then tickling them with light, sensitive, tension.
Sometimes, the lock will open magically, as the pins all properly set. Kind of a reverse rake.
Check out my video [97] on reverse picking, it is a cool concept you might enjoy.

What great visual on the cutaway you are using.
Excellent tutorial, thanks, cheers
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the visual :-)
What cut away lock is this and where could I get it? Great video for someone like me trying to get into the hobby
This one was custom made. Believe it is a Lockwood. You can get cutaway on eBay
This video was really helpful. Thank you!
Nice video, but since there is less and less locks with only standard pins, it will be useful to explain how to deal with overset security pins.
You can apply all these concepts to security pins. The only real difference is with serrated key pins however those are not utilized very often. They are more about prevention than fixing but these techniques can help with them but they are certainly harder to get to drop back down
your videos 211 215 and now this helped me open my old practice lock after 2 minutes after having struggled for an hour... With a hairpin, since I lost my picks :D
Thanksnfor sharing! I'm glad they help :)
I have the newer version of the Sparrows cutaway and I am having a terrible time getting an open it can take me up to an hour, so I figured out why and it's because of pin 5 when I have to set it, pin 1 oversets, so I decided to pull pin 5 and work with a 4 pin lock, for now, I'm hoping to learn feedback and for knowing which pin I'm on and how far to push it up, I gotta tell you it's frustrating as hell sometimes, I have 1 commercial lock and I have gotten an open on it but most of the time I fail.
That is the nature of the sport but congrats on progressing!
Thank you for this video! It's helped out a lot!
Would it still work if the lock was the other way around like in other countries?
Need to talk about the tension you apply as compared to where your at in setting the pin process. How much tension in the beginning?when do i apply tension?do i increase tension?
If you are working with standard pins it is more of a static / unchanged amount. With security pins you need to vary it.
I have been taping lightly on the face of the core if I over set pins. It's been working rather well for me but I currently only have a couple of locks to practice on. So I don't know how reliable it really is for other locks.
Thanks for sharing this tip!
An informative and enriching video. Thank you !
Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad it helps!
Great video thank you, why do you always pick this Euro lock upside down when fitted in a door they would be the other way round and you can't feel the pins dropping
It is because you only have the geographic perspective from where you live. From where I am I would ask you the same question but the opposite
Does this work if the lock is installed upside down?
Hi love the videos! Where can I buy a practice lock like that where I can see both of the pins? I have the clear practice locks but I can only see the driver pins. Thanks!
You can find them on eBay from time to time.
How on earth do you hear the feathers weight pin drop, Especially after zip
What should I do if the lock has the black bit facing up
What kinda lock you use in the vid? And are the pins changeable
This one was a Lockwood I think.
The pins can be swapped out
Excellent video. Very informative, clear and concise
Thank you for the kind words
i have that problem on the better locks in my modest collection, i will be putting these techniques to the test

Good Advice Right there

Where can I find your home home school series?
It is a playlist search "Lock Picking Home School"
How do you know whether to put tensioner on top or bottom?
You just need to try it out and see which binds the pins better and leaves you adequate access to the keyway
@@HelpfulLockPicker Thx. im a beginner and that is an answer that made things clearer.
very useful video
Thank you for the kind words!
Cool video well done 😉 Bravo 🍻
Thank you for the kind words!
My left ear enjoyed this.. However I, myself, enjoyed this too.
👍
Where can one buy top of the keyway tension wrenches? Everywhere I look they only sell bottom
The two main places I get mine from are Peterson and Sparrow's
Sparrows bro
Sometimes I over set on purpose by zipping then lighten tension. I've had luck using this method on my Master Lock 150.
If you haven't already check out my video on reverse picking that is a pretty cool concept which I think you might enjoy
I've actually seen your video on that. Pretty impressive. I'll have to try working on the technique. Usually I'll force an overset and work my way out of it to get a lock open. So many tricks of the trade. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
I'm still struggling with this, and I am working on a crappy Masterlock 141D which people routinely rape with ease. Single pin picking is going real slow for me. I feel like maybe I am oversetting the pin, but it gives a good click, but then everything just feels spongy, and then I am lost and can't find another binding pin. AGHHHHHHHHHH!
The crappy Master Locks don't always give the best feedback. I would encourage you to practice on a Schlage or Kwikset
@@HelpfulLockPicker Ok thank you!
Fantastic animations. Thank you!
I have no idea how to tell if I’ve overset a pin ?

Can you show us how to pick a nose
I believe there are other channels which could do a better job
Can you feel an overset pin when the lock is in the upside down position, like the locks here in Europe?
Yes, it will feel sunken and immovable
Ok but what if the lock is the other way around? So the pins are at the bottom, not the top.
It is similar
Serrated pins are still my enemy.
They can quite tough, I hope to make some videos in them down the road
You can't actually "hear" a driver pin fall, especially if its an older and used lock. You guys shouldn't make this seem easier than it really is. Lock picking is an art.
