what kinds of videos do you want to see next?
The Clarinet Slayer play all types of clarinet and sax
I don't have any sax's right now, but I'll see what I can cook up
How about making a video about why Eb alto clarinets deserve more respect than they get. That's probably my favorite clarinet!
my friend plays bass clarinet and I can relate clarinets deserve more respect
How about filming your neighbours' faces when you play that contrabass clarinet?
I play the bass clarinet and whenever I practice on my Bb I always laugh at how small and light weight it is
right?! lol. There is a spot in Mahler 1 in the slow movement (in the 3rd clarinet part) where you have only a few measures to switch from bass clarinet to Eb clarinet. THAT is a tough transition. And it's all exposed.
XD
I've been meaning to try out contrabass and my band director was like: Yeah we'll have that soon for you to try
that was last year
still waiting
seven years latahhhh...
Quick question in case my director does actually get around to it (which is quite doubtful at this point); How does the contra play in comparison to the bass? You obviously have to move a ton more air (which I don't have a problem with) but is the resistance a lot more noticeable or apparent? I'm not sure what the word is so fingers crossed you know what I mean. Sorry for taking up your time! I really appreciate it! :)
Sunny Black omg don't ever be sorry for taking up my time, thats what I'm here for! things to get used to: the mouthpiece and Reed are bigger so play around with how much mouthpiece you need to have in your mouth (it will feel like a lot compared to bass clarinet, but think bari sax, very similar). don't expect to be able to play long flowing phrases...I can get about two measures per breath in the lower range. anything above the break might be difficult at first. a lot of key work needs to line up to make things happen, so make sure everything is aligned properly and use tons of air. don't be afraid to squeak and sqwauk at first...testing the boundaries of the instrument actually helps your physical control over the beast and find where the limits are. hope this helps!!
and the sax players be like "your instruments come in pieces?"
Patrick Meyer put some respect on the clarinet
Some sax players hate bass clarinets and contrabass but they probably secretly like it
Golden M0nkey I don't lime bass clarinets for one reason......the kids that play it are salty af ( I sit next to them 5 days out of the week :P)
Golden M0nkey i don't secretly like it and i'm a sax player. i love this clarinet!!
ikr XD i play a sax 🎷
I lucked out in that my high school had a paperclip contra I got to play. When I got to undergrad and told my band director that I loved playing contra, he went out and bought a long, uncoiled contra for me to play in orchestra. Most of the band had never even seen a contra in person, so the first few minutes of that rehearsal was the group just listening to me tinker on it for a bit. xD
Great video, and high fives to my fellow contra lovers!!
+Nicole Dorner hi fives all around! So glad you got the experience. LIFE CHANGING.
But can it play Flight of the Bumblebee?
hmmm ill ask it.
I bet it'll be too modest.
Brian McKee it can play anything you play 🙄
Cordata r/wooosh
I'm so jealous. My high school band class had an extra bass clarinet my senior year, and I didn't get to play it even once (the teacher gave it to one of the junior high girls instead of me), let alone a contrabass. 😱
+Candice Honeycutt sorry to hear! Contra is a BEAST
Nice Careless Whisper!
I've been wanting to try contrabass for years. I own a Bb, am alto, and my Bass (my baby) and have played contra-alto, I loved the feeling of the vibrating low notes. When I try a contrabass I want it to be a straight wood one, I'm a purist I guess lol. Good video, it was on my suggested videos haha. I'll stop rambling and subscribe now LOL
Steven Shockley Compared to an old Selmer USA (pre-dates Bundy) Contra-Alto I play on occasion (yes, a plastic), our Leblanc Contrabass (a straight one, kinda cheap, no trill keys and only keyed to a low Eb ☹️) feels like holding an out of balance vertical drum washing machine in the spin cycle on the low notes. It’s an awesome feeling. It resonates in your chest and throat, it is absolutely incredible , and the look on someone’s face when they hit a low Eb for the first time and then abruptly stop (out of shock) is priceless. Though, a proper Selmer wooden Contrabass runs in the range of $20,000+. Also, I have heard they take even MORE air support. And it really does take a lot already.
I love seeing all of the different kinds of clarinets. I play Eb and Bb clarinet. and sometimes Eb alto clarinet. it amazes me how big the clarinet family is
+Weirdo 21 aren't they all the best? Eb is a whole other beast...but I usually play Bb too.
Where are my sax players at
Pokemaster 1 hi I play the bari sax
Pokemaster 1 alto saxophone cannonball AAl
Pokemaster 1 nope sorry trombone
BASS CLARINET PLAYERS UNITE!
Pokemaster 1 here
Awesome! I am currently playing the extremely tall Contrabass in my wind ensemble. It's ridiculously tall. I absolutely love playing it.
Idk why I'm here, I'm in drumline.
lol
Cesar Moreno because clarinets are better ;)
Cesar Moreno clarinet players are cute, I would know ;o
Clarinet players are **BAT SHIT CRAZY** I think is what you mean. I would know.
Clarinets are life!!!
I've played bass clarinet for about 4 years now. I'm Gonna see how well in shape the contrabass clarinet is in my school for concert season. Hopefully is works because it hasn't been used in the past 10 years lol
oh man, good luck! let me know if i can help with anything! the thing is a BEAST
The Clarinet Slayer Thanks for offering lol. I'll try my best and let you know.
The Clarinet Slayer Lol so turns out it was a contra alto clarinet. Still satisfied with it though haha
rip octocontrabass clarinet
Oh I'm late for this. But thanks for the video. My band director is having me change to a contrabass so this really helped. I played Clarinet in 6-7. And bass Clarinet in 8th. 9th I switched to SOUSAPHONE for marching season and went back to Bass Clarinet concert season and now going to contrabass. Oh gosh that's a lot.
As a fellow bass clarinet I will follow and love the smooth jazz at the end
Wow! The Clarinet is also lower than a regular Saxaphone
Your tone is impeccable! I've been playing clarinet for just about 20 years now. Bass Clarinet back in highschool. Never got the opportunity to play a contralto or contrabass, though...
+Louis Rubens thank you!
+Louis Rubens Thank you! You should see if you can rent one from a music store for a few days and play around on them!
Can't wait to play contrabass next year.
The energy of this video is such a vibe. I just started laughing by the end.
Cool haircut
Who owns this instrument?
I have a LeBlanc paperclip contrabass and the body is one piece, metal and black in color. I bought it about 14 or 15 years ago. After I ordered it, the factory in France burned down. I refer to mine as the "Kenosha" paperclip contrabass clarinet because it was made by LeBlanc in Kenosha, Wisconsin. If I remember correctly, I paid $9,000.00 for it. I use Legere plastic contra reed and Rovner ligature. I need to get back to playing it.
That's awesome that you have your own!! If you're not playing it, you should!! :-D
Muito legal o instrumento, já a clarinetista, maravilhosa!
Nice case and assembly.
I think everyone can agree that low notes are very satisfying.
+Cesar Moreno like farts
How much do they cost, and where can I get one. I absolutely love that clarinet!!!
I found this video very helpful, I am now in 8th grade and have played all the clarinets in my school band 😂 soprano clarinet (Bb) alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and now my final is the contrabass (not the "paperclip") the one that's like 6 feet tall...and made it into all county with all of them, thanks for this video, and btw, I love your hair
+Cordata ah, very nice congrats on all your achievements! And also congrats on tackling pretty much all of the clarinets! Have you played the tiny Eb one yet? That one is a beast. For 8th grade that's pretty impressive! Stay in touch, I love to see clarinetists grow into great musicians :)
Subscribed!!!!!! Contrabass Clarinet is my favorite instrument!
I have the Selmer contra alto in Eb, rosewood body. I love to rattle the windows!
That is so cool. Thanks for making this! I play bass clarinet myself. What brand is that? When I was pricing them I didnt see any paperclip models.
Gamer of the Winds I'm a bass clarinetist as well
I think the one in this video is a LeBlanc...It was rented from a music store in Boston for this specific gig.
Also bass clarinet is badass.
BASS CLARINET FTW
My ee tuba contests you puny little clarinet :p
Cool contrabass video! 💥
Thank you! You have a gift!
Ok, i just fell in love with your vibe 🤦🏻♀️
If you like the vibe, come on over to the channel for Celine Ferocious lol…I abandoned this channel a few years ago but upload regularly on that one^
I'm a bass clarinet/contra-alto clarinet player in high school, and I've always wanted to play a contra-bass, such low notes. Sadly we don't have any contras I can use in my area and I'd rather not sell my Jupiter bass and selmer alto to get a contra XD
Surferdude7 The amount of air you need to play contrabass clarinet is crazy, it takes a lot of getting used to when you first start because you run out of air so fast lol! I got so lightheaded my first concert with it, but I wouldn't let myself pass out because I had a solo in a tribute song to columbine and I didn't want to mess it up lol! But it's really awesome playing it + lots of vibrations throughout your body when you play it haha :P
Surferdude7 alright another contra player!
WalkAwayWind That’s what my band director and everybody else tells me: “Oh you need a lot of air to play that” “Oh the Contra is only for sufficient lungs”
And I’m just over here like “Ok I play a contralto clarinet and I can play just fine, fortissimo or not.
@@fatcontroller12 I play the contrabass and I have asthma. It kills me. But I love it
Love it. I play a Bb clarinet, been following classes for 5 years, RC Buffet Crampon for info. Just got a Bass Clarinet Yesterday, a Yamaha Study YCL-221 II, I just can't stop playing it, I'll see with my teacher Tomorrow how to proceed. Not that hard to transition to bass.
Would love to try a ContraBass one day, but there aren't many around !
More clarinet videos please ! Ain't it your passion ?
Clarinet is just one of the things I'm good at, but I will try to post more clarinet related videos. Thanks for the feedback. I love hearing which videos to make more of.
I'll probably be playing contra next year I originally play bass clarinet
I would enjoy my birthday celebration in June accompanied by your contrabass clarinet as we sing "Happy Birthday" as you play at 7:23. I think that would definitely turn some heads and frighten the children.
+Ed Kaye on it.
I'm your 700th subscriber :3 I love your videos!!
Yasss thank you!!
The Clarinet Slayer of course, I enjoy your videos!
Came here cuz I'm writing a piece with a contrabass clarinet in it. I find this to be a very interesting instrument! ;)
SO DO I
Why am i here... i play trumpet... 🎺🎺🎺
+Alyssa Curry well thanks for coming...stick around! We have fun here.
alyssaxcurry ! Same
I do trumpet and French horn! Go brass!
same
I'm on clarinet
Great video!!
+Alan Martínez thank you! *takes a bow*
How do you play this instrument! I play a b flat clarinet and the lowest note(i believe it's F)is already too much vibration for me.
Lowest note is E on yours 😉 you used to the vibration...although on lower instruments sometimes it's hard to read the music because your head is shaking so much.
*you get used to
i have been playing the clarinet for 8 years the bass clarinet for 5 years and the contrabass for 2 years and i love the way they all sound but i have only ever had 1 piece contra and normal bass clarinets.
fellow clarinet player and would like to play that contrabass
I'm saying goodbye to the bass clarinet and saying hello to the contrabass
Holy crap that reed is ginormous
I tinked that the baritone which is the one i play was big but that is a really big reed 😂😂😂😂
I just bought the VSL virtual instrument of this! The sound is just insane :) When is this normally used in a piece, i.e. what would it replace if that makes sense? Or can I just slap it in anywhere like I'm doing haha
Slap it in anywhere it makes sense. Solo!!!
Haha. Normally it hangs out with the contra bassoon, sometimes low saxes...it might sound cool to do a unison duet with a higher pitched instrument so that it sounds like a contrabassclariflute.
@@TheClarinetSlayer Thanks! Right, I'm adding a
I've actually been practicing the contrabass for a clarinet choir. We're gonna be playing The Chrysanthemum by Scott Joplin. It's actually pretty fun so far.
our school has a contra alto made of wood, it is amazing
I appreciate this video on so many levels lol
+Geronimo hey thanks 😌
So hello other side of my Barry Sax. My Director put me as the Contra in our Honors band, and this video helped a lot, thanks!
+Im Pugz nice! Glad I could help. Sometimes putting the instrument together is half the battle. Let me know if you need any additional help!
That was really interesting! Hope lots of musical folks and students tune in. did I hear Careless Whisper? lol. Thanks for posting.
Yes, I had to throw that in there - couldn't resist! Thanks for commenting, hopefully it will help someone out there.
I play flue and piccolo, this is scary and cool at the same time
I SUBSCRIBED! I like you and your content! Keep it up!
killer channel name. and thank you!
Hey this is cool I also played clarinet and bass clarinet though I'm going to brass to play mellophone and trumpet but a random question, do you like Pokemon
+Clumsy_ Phanpy no I never got into Pokémon. Love mellophone though!
Little lady vs Mr. Monster-Clarinet - it's amazing!!!! :-) Cool video! Contrabassoon + Contrabass Clarinet - it's will be great deep bass in a orchestra.)
Are the fingerings the same as a bass clarinet, and does your omboshur (I have no idea on how to spell it...) change much from a bass clarinets?? Also does it have D sharp? (Lowest one)
Fingers are the same, yes.
Embouchure stays pretty much the same because the mouthpiece is at the same angle, but the mouthpiece is bigger so it feels like you have to take more mouthpiece in, and it needs to be a little looser.
Depends on how low it goes but typically an Eb is the lowest note. Sometimes it goes lower though.
I bet your neighbors love you. Btw, I'll watch any kind of videos, as long as you're in them. Cause you're adorable.
They love me even more when I whip out the Eb clarinet. Haha.
I read somewhere where Leblanc actually produced one octocontrabass clarinet, pitched one octave below contrabass.
+RichTheEngineer that's sounds badass
RichTheEngineer they did you are correct
Oh cool, I'm a bass drum and I wanted to play a part in this, thanks :)
On my contrabass, borrowed from my school, I’m having troubles and I’m not being able to play the Bb and anything lower. Are there any tips for that? Also did you have the same problem?
I've had problems with going into the higher registers, but never lower. If you're borrowing the contra, it might be the instrument, not you. Ask your band director to look at it, or have someone like your teacher/band director play on it to see if it needs to be fixed.
Also, contrabass clarinets can be made of plastic, as seen in Bundy and Vito models.
I play a seller Eb contra alto clarinet.
I wish I played this sort of contrabass clarinet, but I on the other hand play the Eb contralto clarinet. It's kind of amusing though, because I went from the simple Bb clarinet to it..
Nice clarinet
Clarinet lover❤️❤️❤️❤️
I play the contra bass that you need the stool for to play it and if it’s possible could you tell me how you get the lower notes out I’m new to it
It's all about getting your air to the bottom of the instrument and having a solid air stream. Sometimes it takes lots of practice and experimentation to find the right mouth position and right amount of air, but once you find it, you'll never forget it. Best of luck, let me know how it goes.
The Clarinet Slayer it’s funny that you said that so I was practicing as much as I could and I played all my low notes and I’m proud of that 😁 it took me a good 3 hours but it works yay 😁 thank you sooooo much !!!!
It also helps to start blowing air into the instrument a few counts before coming in, that will improve articulation so it doesn't squeak.
The Clarinet Slayer oh ok thank u I will definitely keep that in mind while playing thanks sooooo much
As soon as I heard Iron Man, I knew this was gonna be awesome.
🤘
So I play Alto Saxophone (not too well) and my Band director asked me to play this for band lmao!
I'm excited and I really want to do it, but idk if I'll do well :(
Who cares if you don’t do it well?? That’s why we practice!! Go for it!
I wonder why you don't see as many orchestral works- to my knowledge- with these as with the contrabassoon?
The way I see it, you have clarinet and bass clarinet. Then you have bassoon and contra bassoon. Bass clarinet is to clarinet that contrabassoon is to bassoon, so adding one more lower pitched instrument to the clarinet section would probably be too much clarinet sound for the balance of orchestral pieces.
I have the same ligature for my bass clarinet
(I'm sorry that this is so long) Is it Selmer or Leblanc, what's the model roughly, how old is it, where did you obtain it, what's the mouthpiece brand, what's the case brand, Is that a Rovner ligature, does it go down to E flat or C, and where would you recommend finding one?
+Mine Tobes (sorry this is so short). Unfortunately I don't know the answer to most of your questions. The contra is not mine, but rather I rented it from a local music store. It went down to an Eb and I would recommend looking for them to rent so you can play around with them for a day. If you are looking to buy, any reputable music shop or online store should carry them. Or, you know, Google where to find them in your area.
Thanks
+Mine Tobes sure thing. I guess I was so focused on th basics that I skimmed over the specifics. Next time!
Yes it is bootful
Random brass player coming through!
I play Eb Contralto Clarinet. I wish I had a BBb Contrabass Clarinet because I love low Contra Clarinet instruments and music.
Also any other Contra players?
the fat controller laughed same I love my contra alto but contra bass would be so cool
What was that song that she played at the beginning ?
Iron Man.
Is it true that with certain notes your eyes vitreous humor resonates and you can't see the partiture?
+ermennda very true. I've only experienced it with low bass clarinet notes, but with contrabass it's the whole thing.
I currently play the bass clarinet and was wondering if the fingerings and notes are the same?
Josh Nieman12 yessir.
yeah, it needs a more complex keying mechanism to make it work that way, but instrument designers take great pains to make the fingerings the same on all members of the same family of instruments, because pretty much nobody starts on the rare/expensive memebers of the family and otherwise no one would want to make the switch
+Josh Nieman12 yes they are!
"Sit in a chair like a normal human being" 😂 dead
🤣🤣🤣
does a Bari sax reed work?
yes, it should
Nathan Curtis It works on contra alto, so if it's the same mouthpiece yeah
It works, but if at all possible, don't use a bari sax reed. It isn't as wide, so it won't properly fit a contrabass mouthpiece. However, it will work fine on a Bundy contraalto, as it uses a narrower mouthpiece than a LeBlanc/Vito contraalto (same size as a contrabass).
very informative! Also very likeable you are!
does it go to bottom e or bottom c as most bass clarinets do???
+Darren iii I believe this one only went down to an Eb, most of them do go down to a C though.
My guess given the age of it it's built to go down to low D (as opposed to the straight ones that can be lipped down to D). It looks more like a low C contra alto though!
I want to play it
Would Bari sax reeds work for it?
Indeed.
Thanks! Also where would I buy one of these I already play bass clarinet and I am looking to buy a paper clip contrabass clarinet so if you know anywhere that sells them I would like to know thanks!
I'd like to see a video with just music from the contra bass clarinet. Thanks
Maybe, but as of right now I am not making clarinet videos due to personal reasons. My most recent video explains why. But thanks for your suggestion and support!
Is a Bb Contrabass Clarinet or Eb Contralto Clarinet more common?
+Turner Sugg I feel like they are equally uncommon but if I had to choose, maybe Eb contralto is more common? Open for debate!
Contralto is definitely more common but not by that much
You are funny, hahaha, I'am a student of bass clarinet, and I like Contra Alto Clarinet between bass and contrabass
I LOVE the lower clarinets. Such a beautiful sound.
Yeah, me too, You're very nice!!! Don't stop, clarinet in quintet or quartet is The Wonderful of the World!!! Kisses
Kisses! We'll keep playing always. Music is our life blood.
My school has 2 wood contra bass clarinet
FLUTE PLAYERS UNITE!!!!!
The contrabass clarinet I played just looked like a really big bass clarinet lol! The one you have kinda reminds me of a octobass clarinet Lol! But it looks cool (:
+WalkAwayWind did you have to stand up to play it?
The Clarinet Slayer No I probably could have stood though lol, but I sat on a stool.
I have the same clarinet
Can this instrument play fast marcato pieces in double-triple forte constantly for around 3 minutes? What are the things to consider when writing for this instrument?
when writing for this instrument, consider the strengths of the instrument. playing softly is easy. playing low is easy. playing loud is easy. playing high...not so much. Fast marcato pieces...depends on the player.
Awesome!! thank you so much...
sure thing. are you a composer?
I am counting on graduating this semester yes.
awesome! best of luck to you!
Does it read treble clef or bass clef?
Usually treble, although it's good to know both just in case.
What song did you play in the beginning?
Iron Man!
"behold! the clarinet" I like this girl.
nice
I actually play Bb, bass and contra. I play on the long contra. And ugh it's so out of tune Idk what to do. Any suggestions?
Joshua Kim it can be hard when the instrument itself is out of tune. the best way to deal with it is to play long tones to find out what the tendencies are. knowing which notes are sharp and flat and by how much is the first step, because you can anticipate fixing them with your embouchure and air. sometimes unfortunately the instrument needs to be adjusted, keys need to be moved further or closer to the instrument. sometimes with the Eb clarinet you can line the holes with paper or thin tape but since the holes are covered on contra, I couldn't suggest going that route unless you really know what you're doing.
So yea. Lower octaves up too low Bb is okay. Once I get to throat tones it's like 40ish cents flat and or sharp if I adjust the barrel.
Joshua Kim throw down some fingers in the right hand to adjust the sharpness. even fingers 2 + 3 in the left. if throat tones are flat try opening some of the side keys. these are not "official" fingerings but open up or close some keys and see what it does!
Do you think it would be around the same weight as bassoon
Probably heavier honestly
@@TheClarinetSlayer wow I'm thinking of switching from bassoon to contra clarinet next year in band and I thought it would be the same weight so I could just walk around with it lol
Is it the same keys and fingers as Bb and Bass?
+Valimence AJ you bet!
The Clarinet Slayer alright thanks!
