Assassin's Creed Shadows - Who Are Naoe and Yasuke?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 тра 2024
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes place in 16th century Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama era. Players will play as two distinct characters, a Japanese shinobi, Naoe, and - in a series first - a real-life historical samurai, Yasuke.
Game Director Charles Benoit and Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies dive deep into who these characters are, how they differ from a gameplay and narrative perspective, and why they were the perfect fit for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you will live the intertwined stories of Naoe, an adept shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the powerful African samurai of historical legend. Against the backdrop of the turbulent late Sengoku period, this remarkable duo will discover their common destiny as they usher in a new era for Japan.
From chaos to purpose, from darkness to light. A new Creed rises over Japan. - Ігри
Why can’t I play Japanese man in a game that happens in Japan?
Yasuke was a real person, he did exist, he was of African descent and he was put into the service of Oda Nobunaga. This is fact, and is not disputed.
What is disputed are all the revisionist stories of Yasuke as a great warrior, as having been awarded Samurai status, and earning respect of the Japanese people and other Damiyo that he encountered in the service of the Oda... this is not fact
Finally, someone who gets it.
In the end it doesn’t matter, it’s a game inspired by historical figures. They even said themselves they don’t have all the info, so let them put their own spin on Yasuke like they do with all their games.
@@ghosthdizzle2846 And look im fine if you want to go down this narrative in fiction that is absolutely fine but the amount of people who push this narrative as fact is honestly shocking
When have these games ever been historically accurate? There have always been historical inaccuracies in all the games.
Yes and no. Because there are far too little credible sources there have been a lot of inferences on exactly what his place was in Nobunagas service.
In records he is described as a warrior, but never as a samurai.
There is an argument to be made that because it was never stated he was a samurai, he wasn’t one.
But at the same time he was a warrior housed and employed by the largest fudal lord during the sengoku era. Being so without being given the title of a samurai is rare.
So 🤷🏻♂️ it really is up to historical debate
Ubisoft Japan comments are worth a read, they are trashing this game. They find it discriminatory and racist AF what wokeasoft just did to them

Sucker Punch wasn't making a game based on history either.

“You can’t have be a shinobi and a samurai”
Hatori Hanzo: *AHEM*
Ubisoft sure knows how to make a great Assassins Creed game….trailer!
Wait... I thought Yasuke was only a retainer, not a samurai.
He was never given a title or any recording of being a samurai by any scribe or military personnel but you know someone's grandma told em that they were black and samurai!!!!
who wants to play a retainer the whole game bruh
A retainer refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai providing military services. In other words he was a samurai
There's are disputed stories of what he truly was. I think many agree that he was a weapons bearer and a bodyguard. And was a Samurai in everything but the title, and that he would achieved "actual" Samurai status if Oda didn't perish.
Idk for sure, but what I DO know is that there's historical art of him with Samurai Armor, and there's a museum in Japan with a (wax?) figure of him inside in armor.
For all I know tho, he could've been a retainer given armor and nothing more, but from what we do know, he fought in the final standoff for his lord at the castle and afterwards no one knows what happened to him/where he ended up.
So idk, maybe they're placing the game's events being sometime after that? 🤷 Whatever it is, I'm excited to see what they do with him.
The last samurai, starring Michael B Jordan
I love how Ubisoft are saying they can't mix a shinobi and a samurai into one character because it wouldn't be accurate when we all know it's because Ghost of Tsushima did it first and far better than Ubisoft ever could.
Is this really how you pronounce Yasuke's name? Isn't it more like "Yas-Kay", just like Sasuke is "Sas-Kay"?
They're not exactly Japanese are they

It's been a while since I played an AC game. Are they no longer having original characters as leads anymore? I dropped out of the AC franchise a while back after Syndicate. So I'm mainly getting this because we've beek asking so long for one set in Japan and we're finally getting one.

In 1579, Yasuke arrived in Japan in the service of the Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano, Visitor of Missions in the Indies, in India. Valignano had been appointed the Visitor (inspector) of the Jesuit missions in the Indies (which at that time meant East Africa, South, Southeast, and East Asia). Valignano's party spent the first two years of their stay in Japan, mainly in Kyushu.
Entering 1581, Valignano decided to visit the capital as an envoy. He wanted to have an audience with Oda Nobunaga, the most powerful man in Japan, to ensure the Jesuits' missionary work before leaving Japan. These events are recorded in a 1581 letter of the Jesuit Luís Fróis to Lourenço Mexia, and in the 1582 Annual Report of the Jesuit Mission in Japan also by Fróis. These were published in Cartas que os padres e irmãos da Companhia de Jesus escreverão dos reynos de Japão e China II (1598), normally known simply as Cartas. On 27 March 1581, Valignano, together with Luís Fróis, who had arrived in Japan earlier, had an audience with Nobunaga, and Yasuke is said to have accompanied them as an attendant. Luís Fróis's Annual Report on Japan states that Nobunaga also longed to see a black man, and summoned him, and Fr. Organtino took him to him and that Nobunaga, seeing a black man for the first time, refused to believe that his skin colour was natural and not applied later, and made him remove his clothes from the belt upwards. Valignano describes how Nobunaga, thinking that he might have ink on his body, made him take off his clothes and wash his body, but the more he washed and scrubbed, the darker his skin became, Nobunaga took a great liking to him and asked Valignano to give him over.
After becoming a vassal of the Oda clan, Yasuke followed Nobunaga to Azuchi in Omi Province, where he was appointed a koshō (小姓, page).
Yasuke next appears in historical records on 11 May 1582. The Ietada Diary of Matsudaira Ietada, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu, mentions that Yasuke accompanied Nobunaga on his inspection tour of the region after he destroyed his long-time arch-enemy, the Takeda clan of Kai.
On 14 May, Yasuke departed for Echizen Province with Fróis and the other Christians. They returned to Kyoto on 30 May.
His life in japan wasn't documented after this.
The story of the samurai is a story about black men and masculinized women.
Might be a unpopular opinion, but I really enjoy these period-drama ACs starting with Origins, so this has me appropriately excited. Especially the time period of the Sengoku era and characters, both seem appropriately distinct and interesting.
"Yasuke", who was a samurai porter all his life, is only active in the fantasy world.

They always reveal via cinematic trailers - gameplay would come soon enough. It comes out in November...gotta pace the marketing material out.

As for Yasuke position... to put it plainly, I think he's more like a clown.
That's why I feel uncomfortable when people call me a samurai.

How the stealth is gonna work on an armored samurai?
They said all that yasuke isn't designed for stealth, he's more for face to face combat, but can do stealth if you try. And the other one is the reverse
He is no assassin then.
Did you watch the video? The whole point of this was to tell you that one character is a stealthy ninja while the other is a bruiser samurai and that they have different play styles. Good lord these comments are obstinate and set on hating a game that has zero seconds of actual footage.

A black historical figure as the lead in one of my favorite settings. This may be the first assassin's creed game i buy since the 2nd
If racism and skin color is all you care about then why don't ask them to make an assassin's creed in Africa?
@SuperSky9 wanting a black lead in an assassin's creed game isn't racist especially nost main characters have been white but saying the only one with a black lead has to be in Africa was racist..
would an East Asian male character as the main protaganist in a west African AC game be racist or wrong?
For your information having an explorer thats asian or even a European like say Prince Henry being the MC of an african based AC game would be very interesting. AC since the 1st takes history and figuers and blends them into a great fictional story. The story of Yasuke is so shrouded in wonder and mystery even to this day yet people are still very invested in "who" this man actually was. Ubisoft was extremely reluctant to make an AC game set in Japan in the first place and for very good reason. The fact that they took a figure from history like Yasuke whom history doesnt have much detail on and make a game combining his life plus embellished fiction with the prominence of Oda Nobunaga very real japanese conquest we have the recipe for a strong Black character that doesn't feel forced at all.@wilkesmcdermid7906

If they are gonna split the characters gameplay that much between combat and stealth, I hope that it's not like Syndicate where you HAVE to switch between characters for missions. I'd prefer one single well balanced protagonist, but if I have to pick I'd want stealth for AC

The safe play would be to have a more ethnically generic lead character like Altair or Ezio to their respective cultures and nationalities, and most people would have been happy. It still looks good though, gonna sit on this until gameplay drops
Yeah I think it's really cool that both protagonists are people that would've been looked down upon in Feudal Japan, and that they also excel in what they do. I'm a real sucker for underdog stories
I also agree on the fact that it was definitely not the safe move to include Yasuke, on Ubisoft's part it's very likely a large-company-pretending-to-care-for-diversity type thing
Now that the choice is made though, pure intentions by the game Devs or not, people are far too stirred up by Yasuke's inclusion under the guise that they wanted a Japanese protagonist, irrespective of the fact that the other protagonist is Japanese
