It can't be ignored that after years of crying out for a samurai game. AC fans weren't given a game with a Japanese samurai. Unisoft created this mess by making such an immersion breaking decision.
I don't see any reason why you can't defy expectations by pursuing an alternative narrative as long as it makes sense and doesn't cross any lines. You don't have to like it but it doesn't make it wrong or woke. There's so much more going into it and the issue is more complicated than the color of one's skin. It's reductionist and borderline racist.
Lol no. I genuinely think people are judging the game by the fact that there is a black person in it when there's a narrative reason that actually supports their decision to do so.
It would be hilarious for a company as large as Ubisoft to do something like that tho. This is a culture war issue that a lot of people are passionate about.
@@flameout12345 I don't know as much about Disney because I am not interested in their stuff. I will say though that DEI is NOT the reason why shows or games are bad. It's bad writing or bad planning. Sometimes too much focus on DEI can cause tough situations that writers can't get their way out of which is not cool but generally the narrative and execution is way more important than the color of the skin.
The writers are hired through DEI practices. So DEI is the root cause. Have you seen the person writing AC Shadows. You can't tell me thats a coincidence.
you miss the point, of course they fit the narrative to fit the character. the problem is we have been asking for this forever and of course they finely give it to us with sweetbaby all in it.
I think the narrative choice has reasons. They know they could have gone with a Japanese Samurai and it would have worked just fine. They saw an unorthodox angle and decided to take a shot with it knowing not everyone would be on board.
@@_shiroi_kaze_You need to ask the question why they took such a pointlessly wide shot. Ghost of Tsushima gave them the blueprint for an easy win. Why did Ubisoft refuse to take it.
So they made AC Origins, who had Bayek. A black protagonist that is probably in my top 3 after Ezio and Kenway. They get the chance to make a cool Japanese protagonist like Jin Sakai but they go the revisionist history route for an agenda. They won't be getting my money and i hope their stock continues to fall. They missed their financial numbers by a lot, and with moves like this, it will continue.
It would have been totally fine to have a normal Japanese protagonist and it could work. It also COULD work to use a black person here DEPENDANT ON THE NARRATIVE CONTEXT
@_shiroi_kaze_ Putting all caps doesn't make your point more important lol. Now I'm not going to bash anyone that plays this game. I'm just saying I'm not buying it. Ubisoft has made a business decision that I don't agree with so they won't be getting my business.
It’s not a narrative decision. If it was, Yasuke wouldn’t be a samurai in their story. A random black foreigner would be much more oppressed than a samurai. Samurai held great status and respect in feudal japan, so your argument of them being underprivileged and oppressed doesn’t really stand in the case of Yasuke. The truth is there are much more appropriate and interesting historical samurai who have never had the attention of the media that they could have gone with, but they picked Yasuke because he’s black. There’s no getting around it. Plus, every other AC game has had a protagonist representative of the people from where and when the game is set. Having a black samurai as a main character is a slap in the face to Japanese fans who have wanted to see themselves in an AC game for years. You can enjoy the game and not be bothered by the inclusion of Yasuke as a main character, but to say the criticism of him is invalid is very ignorant.
I like that you brought up the fact that the class he is apart of was not oppressed and that it's a counter to my argument. This is the first and only example so far of something to counter my theory so thank you. I think that it doesn't completely negate why theory. The game is not made to be an accurate representation of reality. The game is not made to satisfy Japanese history fans. It's assassin's creed, not Ghost of Tsushina or Sekiro. Their narrative works enough as is and doesn't need to comply with the demands of the major populace. I think it's great that game studios can make games that challenge the norms or common tropes in a way that is plausible. I encourage studios to experiment with the direction they wanna take games.
@@_shiroi_kaze_ They kind of posit it as being a historical account, if not why pick Yasuke instead of making their own fictional black samurai protagonist? The thing that stands out to me is that Yasuke is the first playable character in the history of the franchise who was a real person in history. Every other playable character has been fictional. If they were simply trying to tell a story which worked best with a black samurai as one of its main characters I see no reason why it couldn’t have been a fictional character. Of course assassin’s creed isn’t meant to be an exact retelling of history, we have borderline magical items and many facts are changed to fit the narrative, such as Alexander the Great having been assassinated rather than dying of fever like he did in real life. That being said, they’ve pretty much always, at least outwardly, been sticklers for historical accuracy in the capacity through which it’s possible for the narrative. And they’ve been criticized when drawing away from historical accuracy, such as when it was revealed that you wouldn’t be able to use shields in odyssey or the absence of short swords in Valhalla in exchange for longswords. Getting back to your main point of the narrative potentially centering around oppression, if that is indeed the case the far better option, if Yasuke was still to be included, would be to portray him as we actually know how he was: a servant and bodyguard who was mainly interesting due to his exotic nature within Japan. This would not only make more sense narratively speaking as being seen as some weird exotic thing and treated as such would be degrading and humiliating, which is more appropriate in the context of oppression, but it would also be more historically accurate considering we know he was a retainer and that he was of interest to Oda Nobunaga mainly for his large size and dark skin, but we do not know if he was ever truly given the status of samurai, and in my opinion it’s more likely that he wasn’t. Back to my point about every other protagonist being fictional, if the narrative was perfect for a black samurai protagonist and it was strong in that sense, I don’t see why they wouldn’t have made a fictional character like they’ve done every time before. Them choosing a historical figure for this tells me that they’re not confident enough in the strength of their narrative to justify creating their own black protagonist, and nowadays with sweet baby inc and the such they probably need to hit certain boxes for diversity, which considering the makeup of Japan’s population back in the feudal period would be difficult to create organically, like with the other games. Hence why they would choose an existing black character to justify their inclusion of him, even if he doesn’t actually make sense for the narrative they’ve created.
I don't necessarily disagree with you completely. I think you raise interesting points that deserve consideration. However just because they are trying to have more diversity doesn't make it wrong. I think they have the right to make that choice and for the theme of the game at least from my perspective it works better with Yasuke than without him.
@@_shiroi_kaze_ Well I appreciate you actually considering my points and giving them thought. People tend to ignore or discredit ideas that go against their own, particularly online. I don’t think people are saying they can’t make their own decisions in terms of the narrative, if they want to have a more diverse cast of characters at the potential expense of the story it’s absolutely their decision, and to some that might be a worthwhile trade off, but just because they have the right to do so doesn’t absolve them of criticism if people disagree with the decisions they make. Diversity obviously isn’t a bad thing, but in my opinion it shouldn’t be prioritized over historical accuracy or narrative quality, and should be more so something to pursue once those elements have already been achieved. I just think the setting is not one that is conducive to organic diversity, considering how homogenous Japan was back then, and even still is today.
