Once they realised that people will cough up 700-1000$ for a set all hell broke loose.

Yep the rise of expensive 18+ sets is also ridiculous

@@MasterandApprentice my answer was a litteral quote of someone I know who's in touch with upper level Lego.
He also said that the insane second hand prices for some sets convinced them they can up the prices even more.

Even back in the 2000s these things were expensive as hell. I was lucky to get one big set and I would disassemble it and reassemble it everytime I played with it

That’s true, but there’s more 100$ plus sets now then back then for sure

depreciation of fiat currencies is the main reason

Good video. I agree the value is what people will pay not what Lego lists it as. Like you mentioned Lego is a premium product so they have pricing power. They look to increase price by inflation plus more each year. They will get creative with how they do that.

well inflation is like 10percent worldwide every year, some sets are unfair cashgrabs or experiments so thats that.

Inflation avg wasnt even above 10% during Covid in USA or EU. Im not sure what sources you're using but currently inflation isnt even above 5% for both. This is just companies doing math. Figuring out what they can charge more for and still make more of the people who are willing to pay vs the people who couldn't pay would make them if the prices were lower. Lego has gone from making approximately 5.3 billion in profits in 2015 to 13 billion dollars in 2023. A percentage gain of over 21. USA inflation Average has been 3.16% during that period of time. This is nothing but corporate greed. The sad thing is if Lego was a publicly traded company it would be even worse.
