Volvo has always done things a little differently than BMW and Mercedes. Rather than hold back updates and release them all in "mid-cycle refreshes," Volvo prefers to let the changes dribble out slowly year after year. As a result of this process a car can change significantly over time but it happens so incrementally that to the casual observer it's still the same car that launched four years ago. Such is the case for the 2015 Volvo S60. Vurses the S60 launched just four short years ago (US launch was three years ago in 2011), this S60 has new bumpers, hood, grille, seats, dashboard, infotainment system, gauge cluster, headlamps, new and revised safety systems, all-new engines, and a new 8-speed transmission. The question before us today is: are these changes enough to keep the S60 fresh and competitive while we wait for the complete model-line makeover we're all expecting in the next few years? In this T5 Drive E form the S60 finally has the shove to match the 328i in terms of acceleration and manages to best the 320i for fuel economy all while costing thousands less. Despite its age, Volvo looks on the right track.

Random aside, seems like luxury cars are slowly going away with headlight power washers. Do you know if Volvo's lineup has any vehicles with this option?

Headlight wipers died due to Euro pedestrian impact regulations but the washers are still around, they moved to a high pressure system and most luxury cars (including Volvo) still offer them.

I test drove both the S60 T5 AWD and Acura TLX Sh-AWD today and the S60 AWD felt so much better to me in the handling and acceleration department.
Which one had more interior space ? The S60 looks pretty small like a compact sedan size

Alex, just a suggestion when filming when you are driving the car, it would be best to drive away from the sun rather then into the sun, it would make the quality a lot better.

I just bought the 2015.5 S60 T5 Drive-E Platinum and am really impressed with the vehicle and its technology suite.
The T6 is more potent and on specs the MPG difference is small as you pointed out, but you did not mention that Volvo recommends regular gas for the T5 drive-e model and premium for the T6.
HAve you had any problems with your Volvo Rodolfo?
In regards to the instrument panel display, I like it the way it is. I think, if you're going to engage in a sporting drive, you would want the tachometer front and center. If it were off to the side, it would be difficult to read at a glance.

Ted, The Volvo is similar to other European vehicles in terms of repair costs and reliability which is to say generally lower than American or Japanese options.
Edit: to clarify, I mean less reliable than American or Japanese brands and more expensive to repair.
This is incredibly surprising, I have found almost everywhere that German and European cars in general are less reliable and more expensive to fix than anything from America (which is merely average in reliability but cheap to fix, and Japanese vehicles which are very reliable but more expensive than American vehicles to fix, but less so than European ones). I.e. I think a Lexus would be cheaper to fix than a Mercedes, in my research at least. How come you by this opinion out of curiosity?
La Tempesta Apparently my explanation did not make sense when read back (I added an edit). What I meant was exactly what you said. The Euro brands are lower in reliability and higher in cost of repair vs Japanese or American brands. In general Japanese and American brands are fairly equal in repair costs when you're comparing like options to like options. (Lexus would be more expensive to repair than Toyota in general, but still less than Mercedes, etc.)

I really like the idea of the new Volvo's being all I-4 with (on select models) super/turbo/electro charged but then I think....do I really want a car from a company known for unreliability and high repair costs that has a supercharger, turbo charger, AND electric motors all working in tandem.

Well, it's hard to say, but we should keep in mind that although "unreliable" is a term frequently floated around, and in truth the European brands are less reliable than the Japanese brands, reliability has been constantly improving over the past few decades and the delta between "most reliable" and "least reliable" has never been smaller. According to JD Power the delta between Lexus and Volvo is under one problem per car on average (.84 problems to be exact).

OMG. European engine and feature options are maddening. Choosing features on Japanese are so easy. Just pick bundle level and a higher bundle always includes everything the lower bundles have.

Test drove one yesterday. Sweet ride, but the back seats are uncomfortable and this model has the cheapest feeling outer door handles I've ever used. If you're commanding a high price or competing in this class, nothing should feel cheap. The car should have been stretched 4 - 6 inches for passenger comfort.
They stretched it in 2016 it's called the Inscription version.
Great review.mmI know Volvo now has a 2016 S60 T5 R-Design Special Edition Drive E but there is no information from Volvo as to what the R /Design means that is, cosmetic or real chassis/suspension additions to the T5. Do you know anything about it?
lower and stiffer suspension, different muffler design, different pedal design, different seat design, chromed mirrors, different front and rear bumpers, and if im not wrong, better brakes.
Weight balance on the V60 bests the S4, I'd guess, says the first V60 pilot to tame the Dragon!

I think over the course of watching your videos I've moved Volvo to the top of my list. One area you didn't compare this model is in reliability and repair cost. Perhaps it's better as a totally separate video, but you say 'Cadillac ATS' and I think 'American cars are simpler and cheaper to fix'. Thoughts?
Ted Kantrowitz Volvo is one of the most reliable luxury brands out there... just do some research. Also I have no idea why someone would even say Cadillac is cheap to fix... it’s not a Toyota lol

This car seems like it's pretty wide but not long compared to its class. How are the backseats compared to an Elantra or something of that size?

My 2015 R design has some pedal slack on braking Alex. It bites hard after that, but you didn't notice that you have to give it a couple of inches of travel before it brakes?
Bruno TaTa A couple inches sounds a bit much but it is normal for brakes to have some travel before engaging and that point varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Hi Alex, any ideas why Volvo uses the term 2015.5 instead of 2016?
In the USA, a car can legally be sold with a model year for the following year on January 2 of the previous calendar year. For example, this means that a 2016 model year vehicle can legally go on sale on January 2, 2015. Since Volvo announced the changes July 15, 2014, they could not call it a 2016 car yet, but they could call it a 2015.5 to separate it from the 2015 model years.

Will you be reviewing the 2015 ford mustang?
I know this review is old, but hoping maybe somebody can tell me. Found a used 2015.5 S60 with extremely low miles on it, so we bought it. I notice that instead of instant fuel readings on the cluster, this has average. I can't anywhere in the manual the place that actually tells me how to change that. How and can you change some of the data that gets displayed outside the typical changes that happen depending on the theme?
To change from average to instantaneous fuel economy on the instrument cluster you rotate the L hand steering wheel stalk counterclockwise or clockwise.
You can rotate and knob on the left stock, that changes and configures the screens to show different things. Hope this helps
Alex, I have a 2015.5 S60 Platinum and I was wondering if there is anyway to change the default for the Automatic Start/Stop feature. It defaults to being ON every time I start my car. Not a big fan of having to click it off every time.

T 5, T6...not an indication of the no. of cylinders. This is way too confusing. Fire the person who came up with this naming convention.
TheHoth1 it’s the horsepower rating. T6 has abt 300hp (306hp), T5 abt 250 (245hp) and T4 abt 200 (190hp)
This engine still struggles to get good mpg, and it’s meant for good mpg

Holy Swedish meatballs...definitely looks like a car designed by Gheely! That instrument cluster is sick...with the stupid looking monster air vent at the top of the stack and bellow the overly complicated square of small buttons to control the car's audio, temperature, and ride settings...maybe if you have small Chinese girl hands it's ok. And finally, when was the last time anyone used a CD...like maybe last century. Just omit the damn things from new cars already okay.
soak in that chinese hate. only when you realise geely only finance, not control volvo like ford did. volvo finally came out with their own product (xc90) and became an instant hit. this car still had influences (chassis) from ford. only the engine is new...and the engine is awarded best enging in 2015. dont just hate it because the chinese own it. embrace the fact that geely finally gave volvo the freedom to be what they really are, and not act like american control freaks.
