Raised on a dairy farm all my life and I've never been able to go large family is everything and everyone is very appreciative for each other love your family and farm show lost both my legs and my farm took a dramatic change of cattle and parlor milk only 83 head and having prostics for legs its a very challenging task but milk is my life and helping feed those people who I do in Montana I'd never quite hang in there and God bless you all
You nailed it Allan, when you are into dairy, there is no feeling of being tied down. I feel like I haven’t had a job since I started dairy farming over 40 years ago. It’s got to be a passion, and a feeling that you are part of the farm, just like the land it’s self. And if you buy a new baler, buy a Kubota round baler, had other brands, Kubota baler is tops.

Very informative videos. I grew up on a small dairy farm. Your videos remind me of how things were then. I must say my favorite videos are ones that include the kids. Family is definitely the most important part of your farm.

We used to go to Nebraska to visit my grandparents as a kid. They never had animals that I can remember except for some chickens. They used to take off for Florida every November and come back in time to plant the corn. My dad told me they used to run stock but sold it all off in the early 50s when grandpa hit the age of 65. He was lucky in life and had cash when the depression hit in the 30s. When he passed away he had owned three farms and leased them out to neighbors. My dad could barely wait to sell the farm that he inherited in the early 1980s.
Just when I thought that I had watched one of the best videos that you have ever posted, this Q & A comes along. If anyone ever wondered what makes a farmer, all they have to do watch the two question and answer videos and they will know exactly what makes a farmer. Paul Harvey once said that "God Made A Farmer". Anyone who hasn't heard this or read it really should. I don't know why Alan and Jen, but after watching the two Q & A Videos, I was reminded of that story "God Made A Farmer". I don't which one of you came up with the idea of the question and answer videos, but I tip my hat to both of you. Alan and Jen, you and your children are doing God's work and doing it very well!! He must down upon you with love in his heart. God Bless you!

Paul has good taste in Beer. Love me some Schells. Unfortunately your best crop are ROCKS! Once you get north of St. Cloud the rocks go crazy. Down here in Blue Earth county we have great black dirt.

This was very informative, nicely done.
We left dairying here in 1998, and began putting together a beef hard shortly afterwards. I was 37 then I'm 61 now and I have thoroughly enjoyed my years in the beef business is much as I enjoyed the dairy. I might add that for a long time I didn't think I would enjoy the beef cattle near as much as I did the milk cows but I have found that I do maybe even more. We farm 200 acres keep it any given time between 60 and 90 head of cattle on the farm and I have found out that it doesn't seem to matter where you're milking them or whether you're selling finished beef and breeding stock you're going to be home. You're going to run livestock you best be happy being at home because they pretty much require you to be at home. I have also sold seed corn and other farm seed for the last 35 years and one of my customers who is a neighbor and was one of our custom work customers when my grandfather was in the custom farming business when he was in the dairy business of which he made a lifelong career, put it in very succinct words and it's a statement that sometimes brings me to tears but it shows the dedication of those of us who keep livestock. His words were they just need you so bad! And I guess that pretty well sums it up.
Hey guys nice couple videos very informative great to know more about your dairy and the people running it. Grew up on tie stall dairy got married expanded to free stall barn and parlour and now just have some beef cows.My best memories of the dairy years would be the family tie stall operation happy cows people and way less stress but a ton of manual labour. I don’t see any dogs or cats on your farm no pets?
No dog right now, our last one had to be put down a few years ago. We have 5 outside cats; Topper, Jumper, Buddy, Buddy #2, and Tiger lol.
Here in Southern Minnesota we get 65 to 70 bushels an acre beans and 200+ corn
We lost two more local dairy farms. Bottling plant told them they didn’t provide enough milk to send the truck out anymore. Used to be, 65 in milk was enough for a family farm. Not anymore. That’s why we sold out in 2010, our facilities weren’t big enough and the costs of expansion were too high. I love watching your channel. Your setup is similar to what we had
Now, as an IH guy who's spent way too much time on green, you just need to own more 56 and 66 series tractors. I recommend a 450 for what ails you on on the antique side. And an 806, 826, 1066, or 1256 will scratch any itch. Put the last use green aside, my friend. 😉

as a mechanic of 30 years i would ever do it again to high teck nowadays have to be a computer wiz to work on modern cars 1 more year and i retire hoping for a part time job on a farm wish i had stayed farming 30 years ago

Very cool you were able to put parts 1and 2 on the same day. Funny to think hearing geese and the weather looking so nice that it's snowing and freezing rain and all that comes with it in March. We had a John Deere R it was a beast and it handled the blower on a 60 ft silo no problem. Alas it was traded in for a John Deere 2940 and a bunch of other farm implements. Wish I could have it back.

Thank you for the the Q & A videos. I grew up on a farm with only 1 cow for milk. I am glad to see that you do not think dairy farming is onerous.
Great video. I really understand when you talked about not needing to leave the farm because you really enjoy what you do. My problem is that sometimes it's hard to slow down to enjoy things because there's always work to do.

If you ever had another Q n A.. I have a few questions. You personally like the bag? Silo? For feed or ever think of a pit storage? You only keep ear corn or you have a high moisture corn? Miss Jennifer just mite like a nice Oliver 88 or a John Dreere A for a Brithday present?
Some folks might feel tied down but there is I think more flexibility in some ways.
Jen made the great point of having a full time job is tied down. I think the idea of folks being less tied down might be true BUT everyone is tied down in some fashion.
Alan's point on large farms was also a great one, those places just have to run and I would guess less likely to enjoy.

I enjoyed your Q&A. I like your channel because you represent the small dairy industry and you make due with what you have. Having your family so involved in the operation is cool. The kids are so fun to watch. Keep it up and don't get to where you start doing stupid stuff just to create content.
Allen and Jen, I always enjoy your videos. I love when you show the kids at work, or play, on the farm. There is nothing else like growing up on the farm. My favorite things to do on the farm was plowing, cutting hay, and harvesting the corn. I have had John Deere, IH, and Case tractors and had very good experiences with all of them. Your family seems to be completely happy and satisfied. Keep up the great videos and put God first in your lives.

I'm like you're grandpa! one time I was taking the wife to the dentist, we passed a farm that were baling hay, I slammed on the brakes, and she said what's wrong, I said I gotta go bale hay, I can't take it not farming, she said you can't, your're taking me to the dentist! If you have older tractors, and you had new equipment, the PTO rpm's would different!

My dad's cousin was a dairy farmer but now they raise heifers for a big dairy in their area and Wayne always said if he died on his tractor he would die happy!
I plan on putting a kill switch on my John Deere so if I die the tractor will be safe.

My great grandfather retired from farming. But even still. He never vacationed. He stilled farmed right until his last days. He had a stroke out fixing fence at the age of 98. That iam told. As my grandfather did. He tried as well but still farmed
I bought my wife a Jersey for Valentines day once. We had her for many years as a family cow and we still have a Jersey. My wife also would like to go to the World Dairy Expo some day even though we only have one Dairy cow.

I'm sure you would like to keep the ta in the 560 for the square baler, but a few places have delete kits lower cost to a full rebuild
Yeah, I talked to my mechanic about putting it a delete kit, but he said it would act just like it does now, with it being hard to get out of gear. so we'll probably just save up and get it fixed later.

When u are a dairymen u live by the saying.....we live to work not work to live... My grandpa used to tell me that all the time when I was little and being older now I see he was 💯 percent correct...
My step dad was a hired hand on the old dairy he always said there's always something to do on the the dairy for sure .

Very good videos answering people's questions 👍👍. You're 100 percent right on working an off farm job before becoming a dairyman, I did auto body work for 2 years before I started farming. It was just like being in school you couldn't wait until quiting time so you could go get something done at the farm, now the time flys so fast you don't know where the day went. We looked into bottling our milk a couple years ago but Wisconsin regulations make it about impossible without spending insane amounts of money. Take care 👍

I think our biggest problem is lake superior, if we get wind off the lake, it can drop our temperature a lot.we do measure heat units, but I don't know how much we are.

Your farm is similar to what we have here in Ireland they are small and family run kind of humbling in a way
I grew up on a 300 Acre farm with 40 to 50 head of milkers. Loved the life. But due to unforeseen circumstances I could not pursue this type of life. I am now too old to do it. I am 83 years old so farming is oout of the question.

I personally don't like them, but I know some places that have them, and really like them. I think it probably saves them a lot of labor costs, where I don't have to worry about that.
We need to see more of your wife and your kids
If you farm your own operation. It is you. Get big hire people not the way to farm yourself. Work off farm not enough time to do what you want when you want stay within your limits and be happy

I’m just giving you a hard time. Lol. I have 3 Oliver’s, a 66, 77, and an 88, but I don’t farm, and on top of that, I live in town. 😆🤷🏼♂️
I like the other brands as well, but one doesn’t see Oliver’s every day, and they’re fun!
Oh Jen would love a 77. A neighbor has an Oliver 1850 front wheel assist that Jen drools over.
