try this BEFORE you take anything apart. i learned tbis the hard way. turn the key to the very first position, just before it turns any lights on the dash. then try shifting into whatever gear you want. now turn your vehicle on. put it back into park and turn it off. now turn it back on as you normally would. with shifter in park now shift it into drive. that should fix the problem. that worked for me. no parts, tools and nothing to to take a part. please comment if this worked for you. May God bless you as he did me with this insignificant problem. your giants can be overcome with a little bit of prayer. just stay calm and pray. the answer will come. He already knows what you need before you even ask Him.
I did this today, shifter is way smoother now. However, I did not need to remove everything you did. For those that are gonna attempt this, What I did was remove the 3 bottom screws to remove the top plastic part of the steering Colum, removed the 3 bolts from the back panel just to slightly push it out and I was able to reach the 2 torx bolts and the black plastic part that slipped off. Saved a lot of time doing it this way. still a good video though, helped me do this little fix. 👍
Thanks....I got Ford Windstar 2000,3.8 litre .has shifting Problem, and also indicator needle don't move,it's stuck. Whenever,u get chance to repair a Ford 2000 Windstar Please put a video.!!!
The bushing slides down the shifting rod notice the little black lip on the bushing....there should be 2 lips on the bushing these lips hold the bushing in place. what happens is the top lip breaks of its only 1-2 mm. It will continue to fall out unless you physically remove the bushing and flip it over and put it back with the lip facing up toward Steering wheel 1. Remove Bracket completely (not just loosen and slip bushing back) 2. Remove the bushing (theres a split) 3. Reinstall Bushing with lip facing up )toward steering wheel) 4 . Reinstall bracket holding bushing If you don't flip the bushing it will fall out again. If the bushing has worn off both lips than replace it. The dealer usually has this item in stock This is a common problem and they made this same steering column for many models many years
if you went thru all the work to get to the shifter tube bushings, why not spend the little bit and put a new bushing in instead of pushing the worn out one back in?
Old vid... but I have a 94 explorer no drive but goes into reverse but the shifter does freely move sitting (no engine on due to needing a tire since 1 is pancaked) will update when tire is replaced but just started working on it yesterday
I have a 98 Mercury mountaineer which should have the same parts as your 98 explorer.. its having a shifting problem too. it won't go all the way into park, and it won't go into first at all. Any ideas?
I had the same problem replaced bushings still had problems the arm on the end of the shifter tube had backed off about a 1/2 inch lock lite the bolts put it all back togather all good
Most of this video is ok, but, there's no way in hell you can remove the instrument panel without 1st removing the big plastic cover, that is under the steering column and held by 4 screws, 2 of which secure the hood release lever. Then by removing the 4-8mm screws that hold a metal plate, that lives behind that big plastic cover, and pull that metal plate down a bit to access the two 7mm screws that secure the bottom lip of the instrument panel. Don't try to pull the instrument panel like he shows or you'll break the fuck out of the bottom end of your instrument panel until those two 7mm screws are removed. This video completely avoids that "small" detail.
@@aaronlittle2176 under the steering colum there is an small adjustment you can turn with your fingers. under the truck there is a cable that you can put tension on.
if YOUR OD lite is blinkin ,replace your valve body gaskit with new gaskit shift kit, no bad shifting. all will work fine, and your truck will go faster.
This may be the "worst how to video" I have ever seen, but I'm glad you fixed your problem :)
Wonderful!

That's just a shift covering, why would that cause a problem with shifting the vehicle in "Park"?
The problem is under the cover.
