  • Extreme weather is on the rise worldwide: heavy and severe rains, flash floods and landslides have also occurred in Germany. One study warns that seven times as many people will be threatened by flooding in the next 25 years.
The wrong strategies have also led to dangerous floods. For years, cities and municipalities relied on ever higher and more stable dams. The consequences were dramatic, as the water would find a way. But now, Europe is rethinking its strategy. "Let the water in" is the new approach, pioneered by engineers in the Netherlands. In Dordrecht, rather than using increasingly massive dams in the event of flooding, the city makes space for water. Playgrounds, sports facilities and whole residential areas are built in a way that absorbs rising water levels, without the houses getting their "feet" wet. "We have a system where nature helps and protects us from the consequences of climate change and rising sea levels," says Marcel Stive, professor of hydraulic engineering.
The cathedral city of Cologne has also learned from previous floods. Along the Rhine River, alluvial meadows absorb water, while special pump systems and mobile flood barriers help protect the city.
The floodplain valley near Lenzen in Brandenburg is also a success story. The old dike was cut through, restoring 420 hectares of floodplains. Nature is thriving there. "Rare species such as the white-tailed eagle and the whooper swan have found a new home," says floodplain researcher Meike Kleinwächter, "and that attracts tourists."
The French town of Nevers realized years ago that a river should not be constricted. Fallow land, floodplain forests and marshlands have been established at the confluence of the Loire and Allier rivers. These measures render the river more predictable and less dangerous during floods.

@@gcb4763 yes, but hopefully it will survive us🙏It is quite sturdy still. Just done watching US local news from Florida...stunning how many locals keep just regurgitating we have to build back to the way it was. They're stuck thinking that business as usual is in fact an option🙄. Controlling nature - good luck. Can't remember who said it; only a fool keeps repeating the same action but expecting a different outcome. Perhaps a Greek philosopher? But it seems human (un) "kind" still are mostly stuck in these wheel tracks sadly. Edit: when I say unkind I mean we selfishly commonly think only of ourselves. Not including nature and wildlife (recently saw a relocation program for kangaroos stuck between a road and newly built housing...cried) and also we tend to disregard what we're leaving for future generations and focus only on short term gain. I really hope more people and countries start living with nature and including it and wildlife/habitat in all plans. We don't own this planet we borrow it from all future generations.

Stop drinking and making Coke and Pepsi with ground water around the world. Use surface waters only. That would solve half the issue. All those CO2 emissions that trap heat in our atmosphere also cause more frequent and intense storms and floodings. During these episodes all the water that were missing during droughts rains down. Cosmic ray dose rates peaked in late 2019, and have been slowly declining ever since. This makes perfect sense. Solar Minimum was in late 2019. During Solar Minimum the sun's magnetic field weakens, allowing more cosmic rays into the solar system. We expect dose rate to be highest at that time. Cosmic rays are a surprisingly "down to Earth" form of space weather. They can seed clouds, trigger lightning

The answer to this video question might not be one that we would like... The number of human beings can severely decrease if Nature reacts in unpredictable ways. We already expect Climate Change to exacerbate problems with drought, flood, fires, pests, viruses. All this will also cause human migration, strain our logistic systems (food and medication production/distribution, infrastructure, housing, etc). With all of that, plus human greed, corruption, resistance to change and to share resources, we are up to a whole new level of challenges to our civilization.

Probably because that kind of process would take years or decades (depending on the size of the city) and people still want to be protected from floods during that time.
In some of Europe it's presumably also problematic to find non-flood areas that are big enough.
Additionally these cities and towns are hundreds of years old and so are a lot of their buildings. Old big churches such as the Kölner Dom (Cologne cathedral?) can't just be relocated. Keeping in touch with their historic roots is important to a lot of people. Getting everyone to relocate seems to me as an impossible task.
