    In Spain these instruments have been traditionally called "onnoven". Although the origin of this name is not clear, it's probably caused by a bad translation of "horn in Eb" (the "h" is not pronounced in Spanish). Nowadays it's really hard to find them in our wind/concert bands, maybe by the absence of specific repertoire

      A brass instrument’s “pitch” or “key” determines the series of notes it can play with no valves pressed down. In ascending order, a Bb trumpet can play the sounding pitches Bb-F-Bb-D, etc. without valves, an Eb alto horn can play Eb-Bb-Eb-G, an old G bugle will play G-D-G-B, etc.
      These notes are called the “harmonic series,” which is always a major arpeggio centered around the note in the instrument’s name-Bb trumpet, F horn, etc.

    Being a brass person as well, is there a reason why you used 23 combination on the high Eb? It seems to have the same harmonic series as a Bb trumpet from the music you have displayed and your valve combinations. I'm just curious if it's something odd in this instrument's harmonic series that makes it so you have to play the high Eb as 23 and not just 2 like you would on a normal Bb Trumpet?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  Рік тому +1

      That’s a really good question! I’ve found instruments in the keys of C or Eb are naturally a little less in-tune than Bb. For instance, on Bb trumpet you almost always plays open on E and 2nd on Eb, but on C and Eb trumpet it’s more standard practice to use 12 and 23 for those notes respectively.

      Unfortunately it also serves a background role in Eastern European ensembles. The UK is one of the only cultures to recognize the alto’s potential as a solo or melodic instrument. Not really. Sure, somewhat similar range and their tone qualities aren’t entirely different, but the mellophone is in F, has a forward-facing bell with a much larger flare, and uses a much smaller and shallower mouthpiece. The mellophone is better suited to the high register and generally sounds best when there are many of them playing in unison. The alto horn (of which there are three in the brass band) serves much better as a solo instrument. They serve different roles in their respective ensembles, even if each “imitates” the F horn to some extent.
