I saw them at Caramoor, and was part of the standing ovation. They’re an amazing ensemble, and Jeanette Sorrell’s arrangement of “La Folia” Is my absolute favorite. (I love all the byplay among the members, but broke up laughing when Olivier took a knee at 5:28.)
Can't say I was expecting that, myself, but it certainly seemed to go with the rest of the performance. By the way, I am incredibly jealous that you got to see the ensemble perform it in person. I'm stuck in Indiana, and even when there's not a pandemic going on, I don't exactly get to travel much. I have only been to one Apollo's Fire performance, and that was in 1996, when I was an undergraduate and happened to be living in the Cleveland area, so a former companion of mine took me to hear them perform Handel's Messiah. That was a long time ago. I'm hoping to make it to at least one more live performance in my lifetime. Bonus points if Olivier Brault happens to be with them that night (he seems to be busy with other projects as well, these days).
Every composer worth his salt has a version of this, it seems. Well, nearly everybody. And not only Baroque composers, but really nearly everybody. Check out this channel ua-cam.com/channels/JgELg9ufHzHi4CNK1GJdqQ.html and his blog lelutindecouves.blogspot.com/2010/09/les-folies-despagne-1.html
Great fun as ever = thanks for sharing. Suggest that someone looks at the accompanying list of artists as I cant see Julie Andrijeski amongst the violins but Jennifer Roig-Francoli is certainly in the line-up
La Folia - accent on "o" not on "i". BTW, Brault comes across as a bit pompous, even campy; but I saw him interviewed on Quebec T.V. and he seems a pretty nice and also thoughtful guy, paying tribute to his teacher, for example.
Pompous? Campy? I object! Theatrical to the last inch, yes. But he wouldn't mind that! He and Rene are compulsively watchable, in an orchestra of interesting personalities.
@@rosemaryallen2128 I agree! He’s French, after all and expresses his emotion! And Rene is fun to watch also! He seems to have an ongoing joke with the violist.
A friend of mine who was a conservatory student at the university I went to for my bachelor's says this particular piece of Vivaldi's is incredibly difficult, especially if you happen to play viola or violin. Fun, but difficult.
I saw two really old people dancing to this piece, including a guy who looks as if he ought to be at the Patriots game, and a cleaning lady. It was as if a patriot was dancing with a maid
I had the privilege of being there that night. La Folia was truly amazing...
I'm so sorry but the correct name is "Follia" with to "L".
The menaning is correct Madness (Follia).
"Just a bit caffeinated" , understatement
The older recording of Sorrell’s La Folia is what introduced me to Apollo’s Fire. Awesome!!
Me too!
Can't stop watching Olivier, he is mesmerising. The whole thing was excellent and all worked so well together ❤
Jeanette: "Let's put our music sheet aside for this 'Madness'!"
😊🙌🏽
Olivier has more swagger than I’ll ever have.
And he has the talent to back it up, which is delightful.

Fantastic ! Vivaldi would be very happy with you. The entire cast is masterful. A fascinating performance. Applause and congratulations. Thank you.
OMG and OMG THIS INTERPRETATION IS UNIQUE !
Excellent interpretation. The intelligence of the score and the sound that goes with it.
This is great! I have played this so many times, and this feeling and arrangement is spot on! Love the big band.
I love your music! 😀❤
Mind-blowing. I challenge anyone to find a better musical performance on the internet. Bravo 👏👏👏
Amazing performance by Apollo’s Fire, as always
Brilliant, love their humour, especially the tall gent on the left :)
Just--WOW--is the only way to describe it...
I love the expression and passion the soloist have ❤
Magnifique !
What a marvellous performance with such great interactions among the players and a true pleasure to watch. I could watch it repeatedly without tiring.
The bass player needs to get more camera time.
Apollo's Fire and Jeanette Sorrel takes quality an talent just that level up!!! Really so special!!! My kind of Baroque Bravo !!!!
Every thing about this performance is so superb and joyous that I can overlook the mispronunciation of renaissance as an American foible.
Wow, very impressive and intense. Thank you.
It's so much fun!
Fabulous performance! I have enjoyed the previous recording for several years. This performance Excels! Thank you all so much.
Gracias.
Such an incredible energy!!!!
Is it just me, or did the Baroque composers recycle this theme between themselves? It's lovely. Excellent performance.
Every composer worth his salt has a version of this, it seems.
Well, nearly everybody.
And not only Baroque composers, but really nearly everybody.

Baroque musicale européenne gloire vivaldi
I love Folia so much!
I call this heavy metal!
Tanglewood seems to get the best. From Santana and It's A Beautiful Day in '70 to this 45 years later. Outstanding.
Vivalicious!
Simply superb.
Amazing performance!
Simplemente brutales
Bravissimi.
Fantastic! One of my favorite pieces and ensembles. So much to enjoy.
Muy bueno
Fenomenaal !!!!
Great fun as ever = thanks for sharing. Suggest that someone looks at the accompanying list of artists as I cant see Julie Andrijeski amongst the violins but Jennifer Roig-Francoli is certainly in the line-up

Madness nah excitement I call it
Cool!
La Folia - accent on "o" not on "i". BTW, Brault comes across as a bit pompous, even campy; but I saw him interviewed on Quebec T.V. and he seems a pretty nice and also thoughtful guy, paying tribute to his teacher, for example.

Do French Canadians differ at all from the native brand, I wonder? At any rate, Olivier is sadly missed from recent Apollo's Fire videos...
I'm so sorry but the correct name is "Follia" with two "L".
The menaning is correct Madness (Follia).
The performance was amazing, congratulations.
Amazing music! Come to us in Russia, in St. Petersburg!
Majestueux Vivaldi hard
A friend of mine who was a conservatory student at the university I went to for my bachelor's says this particular piece of Vivaldi's is incredibly difficult, especially if you happen to play viola or violin. Fun, but difficult.
Heard Corelli's La Folia yesterday... More subdued IMHO
❤🎉

Bravissimi.
The Italian job
Lmmmp
Mad, but not pathetic--an exaltation of derangement.
Brilliant!!!
