Was this in Europe, perhaps England where you were watching these two do their thing in the 1970? It certainly gives me the impression that it may have been.
Amazing footage, spent basically the first ten years of my life at the Showground every Saturday night during summer there, sitting in the Sinclair Stand where the start line was. I’ve no doubt I was there, we never missed a meeting. For some years my uncle rode there and dad was his pit crew. I have a large b/w photo of them both in the pits at the Showground. Dad had a huge box full of programmes which I was never able to save except for a handful including the one from the last time we went there before moving away from Sydney. They were the best nights of my life and I’d do anything to go back there. The last time I was there was for the Royal Easter show in 1984. So many memories… Edit… I’d be curious to know if anyone knows what the music track in the background is. Cheers.
Wow. This takes me back. Jim Airey at Liverpool, where I watched the 1981 Australasian Final from the hill on the third bend at the end of a two-month backpacking speedway (solos) tour of Australia when I was in my youth. That night I saw my all-time hero Ivan Mauger score his final 15pt maximum in a world championship event. I returned (from England) in 1996, for the final two nights of speedway at THE Sydney Showground (has there ever been a more magical name for a venue?), having not been able to spectate there in 81 as it no longer staged regular meetings (although I did explore every bit of the track and stadium). Those two meetings at the Royale in 96 remain among the favourites in my lifetime of watching speedway around the world, not so much for the racing, but for the atmosphere and the historic significance. As one of the Sydney papers put it after the final meeting, ''next week would have been too late.'' Like many, I walked the track after the final meeting and grabbed a bagful of shale, which I have had on display in a jar back in England ever since! Wonderful memories of what is, sadly, a dying sport. No one even seems to have arranged a special meeting to mark the 100th anniversary of West Maitland later this year, which says it all really.
Cheers it was an event not to be missed on a warm saturday nite in 1975Dad drove us To watch Phil Crump Win. I think his rear tyre was on the wooden bordesOn the outside line , never seen any one lap that quick
takes me back to the banks of the murry. where first timers were nearly as entertaining as crumpy as they experienced first hand why they had so much standing space on that particular spot.. "laps á langtree".
What's changed? That creep from Adelaide, that rotten Rupert Murdoch got to turn my precious Sydney Showground Speedway, into a overrated picture theatre. That's what "changed". As if all the pressure from the "Johnny come lately", whinging Yuppies and their own "noise pollution" campaign wasn't enough, someone with more money than the lot of them (Murdoch) came along and got the place handed to him on a platter. Oh yeah, I know, I know, money talks ... But every Dog has his day, and isn't to far off. Age is a great leveler, isn't it?
@@st2816ven Yeah, you're right, that's Phil Airy at Liverpool Speedway alright. And not to long after it went to asphalt on the outside, and a dirt ring left around the infield for the bikes.
Bristol bulldog...
Brilliant 1976 77 watching phil crump and the legend Ivan major.. happy days..

I was always a Jim Airey fan but after that night always enjoyed following the career of Phil Crump
1975 Australian title.
1st - Phil Crump (Vic)
2nd - John Titman (Qld)

just a pity phil was in an era where there was so many world class riders otherwise he would have won at least 1 world title
That's not Phill Crump
