St Ambrose of Milan spent a lot of time in the Byzantine capitol of Constantinople and was pleased with and influenced by the “Byzantine” chant that he heard there. When he returned to Milan (Italy), he wrote this music. Glory be to God for all things.

Christian religious holidays are not the same in south Louisiana. For the past couple of years, my family and I can't decide what to do about Christmas Mass. We had been attending Latin Mass, and no, I don't understand Latin (French and Spanish, yes - I can figure most of it out). We enjoy the feeling of Latin Mass. In 2015, after midnight Mass we were almost run off the road. It was a fake, a fake cop. Thank you for this format. Never before in my life did I ever think attending Mass would be unsettling.
Dear Callixtus Channel, thank you for your amazing contribution to introduce today's world to the hymnody of the early Church. I would like to ask you, or anyone else having this knowledge, if it is possible that St. Ambrosius of Milan, introduced the hymnody of the Churches of the east (ex. Syria) to the western Church? I ask this because the Ambrosian Chant seems to contain middle eastern elements in its melody. Thank you again for you dedication.
You would like Byzantine Chant if you like this. I feel like you could make Gregorian Chant sound like this if you took the melodic patterns and added some more byzantine style ornamentation like this song has.

is this a bad example of the use of microtones or are they actually going flat?? This is hurting my ears, which is strange, since I normally enjoy this type of music... just not this piece.. first time I think i have given a thumbs down...
I love this piece for this reason, i love the microtones, maybe because I come from Spain, and Flamenco loves microtones... I love this chant more than any other for this reason... microtones are like old cheese.... you need to try them a lot to begin to appreciate them... best! Manolo
I doubt Ensemble Organum and Marcel Peres got the microtones wrong. This is just an unfamiliar and very old Western (Milanese) chant/musical tradition which nowadays is very rarely heard. It has its own rules, scales, and theory behind it. It can take some time to develop an ear for the modes and scales being used, here, even if you are used to other microtonal traditions from the Middle East and/or Asia.
