  • In this video we look at, and discuss with some amount of gusto, the Merchant Navy Locomotives that we have on the layout.
    These Include 21C1 Channel Packet, 21C3 Royal Mail and 35023 Holland Africa Line.
    21C1 has a YouChoos DCC Sound decoder installed, along with a crew and real coal.
    21C3 only came out of the box for this video.
    35023 Holland Africa Line is factory fitted with Hornby TTS.

    Back in my secondary school days a friend and I used to go down to nearby Hither Green station and watch these Merchant Navy and West Country class engines roar through every lunch time. Happy days, never forgotten.

    The MN’s were rebuilt for ease of access, problems with Bullied’s valve gear and occasionally the lagging between boiler and casing caught fire! Nice video, lovely to see those three running :)

    They struggled with wheelslip because in an unrebuilt merchant navy they have an internal chain drive which had to be in an old bath however they were prone to leaking and the oil got on the track and caused them to slip great video guys keep up the good work

      @@hoskinb1 youre definitely right but i have alot of experience working woth both variations and the unrebuilts slip alot more and its due to small leakages from the oil bath it was a noted issue by BR

    MODEL BATCH PRODUCTION SYSTEM.
    Most manufacturers are obliged to comply with the Japanese inspired "Batch production system", even though production is in China. In other words people like Hornby who's products now come form the Piko plant (Piko ex East German manufacturer)somewhere near Canton, have products produced in batches, which helps ranges expand. This also means the factory size (and overheads) are kept to a minimum.
    Modern electric computerised tooling means that only the "head" needs to be changed to produce the next model in the production queue. It may take around 4-6 years to work through the complete range, but normally each model will be re-run. Another benefit being that as models are no longer painted, as they now use rapid drying (3 seconds) inks. So every time you do a production things like running numbers and nameplates can be altered. Modern tooling also allows for "change out" parts, so slightly different variants of a particular loco are also possible.

    PROGRAMME NOTES:
    The "Canisters" in the back of the tender are in fact the Vacuum brake reservoirs. Quite typical on a number of Southern loco types.
    The difference in shape of the "air smoothed casing" between the SR Green locos and the BR 35023, is primarily because as built the casing was NOT lifting the smoke out of the Drivers line of sight. So Southampton Universities "Wind Tunnel" was used to develop a better front end shape which also added the smoke deflectors, to help lift the smoke higher. Also BR35023, is from the third batch of ten locos completed in 1948-9 by BR Eastleigh, and they had also started a process of simplifying the air smoothed shape of both the locos and tenders. Rebuilding of the locos by BR took place between 1956-59.
    Sound system as with virtually all steam models is totally incorrect. These being 3 cylinder locos they has a slightly uneven 2+1 "chuffing" sound, because the valve gear was not set at exactly 120 degrees intervals. Also the "chuffing" of steam model sound systems is never in time with the movement of the connecting rod, even though DCC has the capacity to solve this silly problem !!!!
    On 24th April 1953 No:35020 "Bibby Line" working the 14.15hrs Plymouth-Waterloo express suffered a broken middle driving axle approaching Crewkerne at 70-80mph. The crank axle fractured through the sprocket seating of the left hand axle piece. The loco had run 353,256 miles since built in July 1947, and 154,322 miles since its last General overhaul in May 1950. The offending crank axle was No: E4237 manufactured at Eastleigh in 1947, and had run with the loco since new. This incident resulted in all the 30 locos in the class being withdrawn until their axles had been tested, which took a few weeks. Nineteen locos in all were found to have flaws, (14 locos) in the centre driving axle sprocket seating, and (5 locos) in the crank web seats. The problem was initially ascribed to "progressive fatigue", but further testing discovered it was more complex and was in fact "fretting corrosion fatigue". A phenomenon which occurres at the contact point between two highly loaded metals. The solution was a redesign of the crank axles increasing the diameter of the crank axle portion by just three eights of an inch was sufficient to solve the problem temporarily. In the longer term new balanced crank axles were built and fitted. "Bibby Line" incidentally, was fitted with extra long smoke deflectors, until rebuilt. So its probably just as well your Hornby model Merchant Navy's don't actually have crank axles !!!

    Just found your channel and you two are a right laugh!!!! 😂😂😂 Love it! Keep it coming!!!! And someone has already said what the issues are but I remember reading about the stream line casing and they say that they use to catch fire between the casing and boiler! Not sure if it's because they had cladding between the boiler and casing or some sort of foam... personally I prefer the Battle of Britain class wish is very similar just shorter on the frames and different gearing 😁
