Hey Chad, those power line connectors are safe enough - the bolt sticking out doesn’t have any power going through it. However, it is good practice to keep clear whenever possible, especially with aluminum ladders. If you do find yourself working too close for comfort, you can call the power company and ask them to “wrap the lines”, and they will install a heavy-duty rubber blanket around the wires. They typical don’t charge anything for this, but you do need to call in advance.

Thanks for the advice! It was the metal sticking out that I was worried about. In the back of my mind I knew it was fine, but i was definitely very aware of it. Lol.

@@vjmacintyre Yeah, that can be a problem. It depends on the power company, any recent major storms (even far away if they sent crews to help), and how grumpy the scheduler is. I have also seen the covers still on the line years after the work was done. All you can do is try.

You guys don’t need to use mortar collars in your state to pass inspections?

We don’t. I would love to know your thoughts on them though. I called a couple years ago and talked to one of the lead engineers about getting better with expansion at the thimble area, he recommended I keep mortaring them like usual. I’ve never seen a mortar collar in practice, but I know this is an area I would like to get better at.

Two hours is hard for me of it’s for more that a day or two. Send me some pics of what you have and your address and let you know if I could do it. It would have to wait until spring at this point. Cvmasonry04@gmail.com

I will take a video and send some pics. Basically when it rains for a few days i get a leak from the chimney and leaks down the wall and escapes out near a light switch. I went up there. The flashing is a mess. Needs a repoint and a few bricks have cracks. The cap is gone and the top flue that extends out ir deteriorating. The chimney isnt blown out or anything. Its still intact. Just needs work.
