- Friedrich Nietzsche has been called many things: a deep immoralist, an alarm bell for a nihilistic world, and a syphilitic madman. But today I want to talk about his philosophy of happiness, and why I think we can all learn a lot from his warnings about how a person can become truly miserable, wasting their potential in a lazy nihilism, and losing everything that makes them unique and peculiar in the process. We will begin with The Last Man and then explore through The Joyous Science, to see what insights it has in store for us all.

CORRECTIONS:
I refer to the eternal recurrence as a "thought experiment" here but it evolves in Nietzsche's later philosophy to be more than this, amounting to almost a metaphysical doctrine by the end (though there is much scholarly dispute here).
I realise that my language about "freedom" here is misleading, and stems from my particular philosophical conception of freewill (I am a bit of a compatibilist). It is important to note that Nietzsche does not believe in freewill as the ability to do otherwise. He instead saw things as a matter of strong and weak wills. This was an oversight on my part, as I am so used to a compatibilist definition of freewill, under which Nietzsche's concept of a strong will would involve having more freedom (where freedom means will aligning with reality). I apologise for any confusion caused.

I get what you mean but I would argue he still had a set of beliefs. You can trace a through-line across his works and in context I would not say he never committed to his stances and that they were all just thought experiments (there is actually a really good book exploring these issues called “Nietzsche’s metaphilosophy” if you want a variety of perspectives).
Right…but a set of beliefs is not necessarily what he means by “system” here. And I would generally avoid using single aphorisms to make broad judgments about Nietzsche’s entire philosophy, as they sometimes contradict or can be taken out of context. For instance, the quote you just used is from Twilight of The Idols, where the broad focus of the work is attacking the kinds of “objective, metaphysical truth” that philosophers have claimed to have. He’s not saying “never assert things”.
I think it’s more productive to read many of his works and get a general picture of his worldview.

Where does the story of Nietzche getting rejected by a women and the horse thing come from? Been hearing it echoed all around, but from what I have heard it seems to be just gossip that occured after his death.

As someone who is a deacon by force and has been serving in church by being pushed by my parents. I knew exactly what you meant by "People are Hell..." The expectations they had for me is insane. As a result of my experience with power dynamics in the Orthodox Chruch, I made a personal quote - "I Love Humanity, but I deeply hate people" maybe one day I'll love people who's Value and Will align with mine..

Don't underestimate the genius of Nietzsche. His Genealogy of Morality was so insightful. So much of what he predicted has come to pass.
It is certainly a very insightful work

I feel like Nietzsche was just a very angry absurdist. He had every right to be angry, don’t get me wrong, but I think that’s more accurate than pure nihilism. I’m a proud absurdist, the more you can do what others won’t, to make yourself and others happy, helps even during the saddest and most lonely times in your life. Brother, I dont comment on videos, but have watched quite a few of yours over the past few weeks and love your reflection on and summaries of humanities most interesting thinkers. I, myself, have trouble with resentment of people in power which, I believe, has contributed to a fear of power. The more I think on it the more I realize it doesn't seeve me. I think is also important to think critically about the things we say "yes" to in life. Having an affirmative and creative doctrine also implies saying "no" to those things that limit our own potential and restraing ouserlfs from affirming life. Saying no in order to keep saying yes.
Saying yes to the things in your life doesn't mean saying yes to everything anyone wants you to do. It means being fine with your situation if it is out of your control and not resent that present situation just because you can imagine one you would rather be in but either embrace it as a necessity for your life going the way it is intended to
The pursuing comfort is something i notice more and more, and to find out it was talked about already over a hundred ago scares me for the future

Ruin your life? Try this, work really REALLY hard at something that has no purpose or direction, and when you start to question it, just work even HARDER. Tell yourself the struggle is worth it and you got a big pay day coming. Double down, triple down, no excuses, go hard or go home etc... remember, you don't have time for relationships or socializing. Just kerp working hard at this stupid task. Burn out is just around the corner. Wooo! Mission accomplished.

Nietzsche basically says that the first thing you have to do is have an ideal to strive towards so this doesn't happen.
You got it! this was my experience with college. Burnt out after college because everything I work for amounted to nothing, I graduated during the recession in 08. It "felt" like life was ruined for a bit, no jobs in the field I worked so hard for because it was mostly layoffs at the time and barely any new hires. I fell into a depression, one mostly fueled by regrets because I always wanted to change my major but because of family expectations I stuck with some thing I did not want to do in the end nothing. and guess what the same family when I didn’t get the dream job with the dream money turned on me. That ate me up. But with time I found my bearings again, although it was hard, I used the down time to learn about the industry I really wanted to be in. Took jobs often times low paying to get in the industry to learn. I'm still a work in progress. no happy ending just yet, but I'm living a life more in tune with what I always wanted.
I told the story to say, while it might FEEL like your life is ruined in this type of circumstance, it isn't ruined - This is what I’ve learned on my arduous journey. That feeling can overwhelm and blind you from seeing and taking opportunities that are laid bare every day. Every day is a new opportunity. Changing perspectives and defining your own values are the keys to getting out of that hellscape of the mind that "failure" can throw us into. Life is never entirely ruined (within this context) it's just an invitation by life to take a different journey.

This video is reminding to re-read certain of Nietzche's writings to determine if he believes in determinism and predestination, though maybe expressed with different terminology.
The determination to be sad is all that is.
And its correct and perfect to be so.
Verry well documented, and nicely explained. I think this knowledge should be explained on how the society should form based on it, and how we should behave that our own "bubble " can easily integrate with others. The "power" will come with this behavior. Its easy to talk about power when you have it,be it knowledge,a good environment, or a decent way of life, much difficult to create this concept when you're environment its harsh, and tries to put you down at every step. So maybe you will use youre knowledge and apply it to different behavior of our society. Keep up with being awesome!!!

The description of "the last men' is literally a spot on description of the majority of the American people in this decade
I may be missing something but,
i think by perusing comfort you’ll go through hardships anyways, that will eventually either make you stronger or leave you completely broken
It’s up to us to chose what to do with our current cultivation of experience
But the key, in my opinion, is it’s necessary to be aware that any kind of hardship you go through is something that was needed, and shouldn’t be avoided to make you the best version of yourself
Which is why we need to constantly remind ourselves of that, be cause i think it’s human nature to seek “comfort” or “easy ways”, which makes it inevitable.

Really great video. Could you explain more in depth and maybe more in laymans terms of what we should do next according nietche in your beyond good and evil video. Ive been told that Nietche doesnt want us to go back to noble morality but rather wants us to be creative(bringing something new to the world) and creating our own values.
I agree with almost all of this video and it is very well done, Nietzsche did address a lingering concern by acknowledging that each soul is at a different level with different drives and ambitions. I'm not sure anyone can be all things, at best we self reflect and guess our path. I found myself born into the same paradigm as Zarathustra in this lifetime and it has been a violent journey. I come to serve as a lightning rod for the societal herd and while awful at times, it has served in my unique development. Also agree with Nietzsche we are in some kind of time loop but our roles and development may advance until each of us is ready to put on the Zarathustra mask, but it becomes a tricky thing when you dig into the patterns, you wonder if that is you or if you've only immersed yourself in the part so completely like a method actor, that it's just another role but hopefully a graduating opportunity. I don't think you can see this from another role and decide to be it, but you have to be born into this "time out" life. To go to your room and think about what you've done, it's the best way to truly develop. I like to think we all make it, we all break out of the underworld but I don't know the answer. Being a part of the herd has its benefits, camaraderie, fellowship, protection, structure but I see it leaves souls wanting, there''s no finer thing than to learn to sail alone against the wind. And I think it was about this herd predicament and the responsibilities therein that led Thoreau to observe "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." It's the cage and the herd that snuffs out our fire, almost all are born into this fate but also I believe each will have his moment in the sun to "Make your own kind of music"

Awesome video! I particularly enjoyed your comparisons with other schools of thought (Stoicism, Buddhism).
You did raise a big question in the end on the relationship of Nietzsche's unhapiness and the applicability of his advice.
I'd love to hear arguments on this. In my opinion, the issue is that he is a destructive (as opposed to constructive) thinker as he tells us what *not* to do and not what to do, which perhaps is a question for the individual.
Regardless, Nietzsche is and will remain sui generis.

I always think of him as providing a fierce reaction to what he saw as a stagnant philosophy that had, by his estimation, gone too far along the path of renunciation.
So some of his ideas may seem extreme, but I wonder how much of it is him attempting to “redress a balance” and making up in intensity what he cannot in volume.
But then again, I might just be bending over backwards to defend him. A lot of this comes from my reading of the mini declarations of war in Twilight of The Idols

The Will to Power is very similar to "Thanatos drive" in Civilization and its Discontents by Freud.The aggression drive,when people don't let it out,it eats themselves up,as like resentment like you said.So,Christian values and beliefs like "love your neighbour" aren’t possible as it will lead to self hatred ,and in Freuds words "bed rotting"

Nietzsche had a profound contempt for happiness in the sense of contentment as in a static passive rest. His philosophy essentially is based on affirming the innate character of life which he considers overcoming.
I like what he said about the attachment to morality, I disagree about loving the pain. When you are obsessed with something it's not painful to work hard for it. Like if I love the pain of working a 9 to 5 I want ever stop working it, I'm just going to keep enduring it. I think falling in love with process striving for greatness is better.

The one thing about pleasure I have learned through addiction is that there is a major difference between excitement and joy, i don't think of joy as a value to strive toward, i think joy and power might have a cross over, maybe joy can only come through being our highest sense of self.
So Jealousy vs. Envy (to want vs. take away)
Amor Fati, practiced flawlessly as Nietzsche prescribed, would require nothing short of madness. That doesn't mean it isn't a useful tool to navigate the rougher Waters of your life.
