- Guitarist Anthony da Costa showcases two excellent pickup options available for the Collings Statesman LC series in this A/B comparison video.
Please note the guitars are tuned down one whole step for this demo, since this is how Anthony commonly uses his personal Statesman LC.
Anthony da Costa tours solo and as a member of the trio Da Costa. He also plays guitar and sings harmony with Aoife O'Donovan.

Im gonna go TV jones here too ... the Lollar has a bit more mids like a humbucker where the TV jones just has that chime and clarity you typically hear in a classic filtertron pickup. The lollartron sounds a bit more for someone who wants a pickup that splits the difference a little between a filtertron and a humbucker. They both sound amazing regardless.
Such great playing! Every now and then you see a guitarist where you instantly connect with their playing. Love your craft, Anthony.
This is how comparison videos should be. Also, great playing!
Fantastic demo, does exactly what's needed and straight to the point
Brilliant demo - amazing tone.
Which model tv Jones did you use? The classics? They make about 15 different filtertrons
Very cool comparison and great playing
These players are superb from this channel ! What a timing :O
Lovely playing for comparisons.
I like the Lollartron bridge and the TV neck :-)
Finally some normal playing...can see a man who appreciates his gear, thanks for the vidz
No strong opinions about the pickups, but that body resonates so well. I think I like the non-blocked hollowbody tone a lot more. I don't know why it isn't a more common design choice. Brilliant playing.
Thank you for this comparison. Like you said, both would be great! Unfortunately, many can't swing that option. I like the comment about TVJ in Bridge and Lollar in neck, my first thought as well. I love the grind you get from the TVJ and the full and smoothness from the lollar. But what would the middle position sound like? Hmmm? Probably a nice balance of the 2. Hopefully output is similar enough to get a good balance.
All great, but the guitar is tuned a whole tone down. It does make it harder to imagine the tonal difference with standard tuning.
Nice nice nice review, Thank you !!
In a sea of pickup comparisons, this one is interesting. The Lollar pickups are have fewer overtones, but even in the midst of those powerful bass tones the midrange has some room for dimension. One of those situations where you cant go wrong, especially with this guy playing the guitar. Also, it can't hurt to have a Collings guitar for a foundation.
Which lollars did you use? Vintage or the modern voiced?
Great playing, Anthony! I think I like the TV Jones better for this style, but it's awful close
What tuning is this!? That second progression is amazing.
I was looking at Creamery's Black Cat FilterTron demo and people were saying "great sound". I just had to laugh.
