- Radium was touted as a miracle wonder drug, capable of curing all manner of illnesses. The radioactive paint also glowed in the dark and was thus used to paint watch dials and instruments for use in the military during World War 1.
After the war, glow in the dark products continued to be popular. The dangers of exposure to radioactive radium were not fully understood, but into the 1920s, the companies selling radium products, notably, the United Stated Radium Corporation and the Radium Dial Company, actively tried to cover up the harm the radium paint was causing to their workers.
This is the tragic history of the Radium Girls, also known as the Ghost Girls, who glowed in the dark just like the radium paint, and who ultimately paid the ultimate price because of corporate greed.

In my experience there are a great many people in the world that do not care what happens to others as long as they benefit. Most are politicians or upper level management. Evil does exist, unfortunately.

My mother worked with radium in Chicago 1942-1944. She painted dials in accordance with US government contracts during WWII. She lost two sets of twins and battled anemia from 1946 to 2012. I researched the company that had poisoned many girls & was a Canadian company. We found that she could NOT get compensation for her injury.

R.I.P Girls, unfortunately we have not learned by these mistakes made by these corrupt Goverments and corporations to this day.
The harm, neglect, and lack of care for the Radium girls was a great injustice. The owners bear great responsibility for this crime.
