Beautiful specimen and quite unique to me. I was watching a video from Edwin's Plantie Adventures channel and he switched from peat to coir. Hi, I've been watching your videos for years now and I have learned so much. Lately I've had a problem with all of my fern leaf cactuses (my favorite plants). I've had them for about 5 years and with no issues. But all of a sudden, the leaves on them have been turning a crispy brown. It starts at the tip and works its way down towards the stem. I've made no changes in sun exposure, watering, or placement of the pots. All of my other jungle cacti are fine. I've done research online but couldn't find a solution for this. Would you know what could be causing the leaves to brown? I would appreciate any help. Thank you.
Hi there, the strange thing is i have been experiencing exactly the same problem the past few months with my Fern cacti too, the edges of the leaves are going brown and crispy and spreads down, I have been pruning off the brown ends but it still keeps reappearing, I have had my two for about 4-5 years too, there are no signs of insect pests and the only thing I could think was I was over fertilising, too much nitrogen can cause brown crispy edges on Fern cacti, but I have stopped fertilising them a few weeks ago and it still is happening and I am so puzzled to why its been happening, my friend is also experiencing the same with hers too, its a bit of a mystery and so sorry I can't say whats causing it, my fern cactus in this video was growing so beautifully but looks so brown and scabby now and I am trying to propagate some of the healthier leaves, keep me updated on how your fern cactus gets on, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon wow, sounds like I'm not the only one. I've also cut off the brown parts of the leaves and, like in your case, it comes back. I actually never fertilized mine ever so that's not the cause. I have cuttings in small pots and they are browning too. I don't know what to do, but yes, I'll keep you posted. Thank you for replying.
I have this plant...a cutting also. Is there a way to make this particular plant branch out? Become fuller? Without cutting it up and propagating it? Probably not right? Btw very cute apron. 😊

Did you notice that the leaf (stem) segments of this plant quickly turn brown when cut? It does seem uncommon for epiphyllum in my experience - maybe they were unhealthy segments to begin with?
Hi Justin :-D yes I notice this happens a lot with my Fern Cacti, I also notice that they have a habit of going brown and crispy at the tips of the leaves too, I am not sure why this happens as I give mine plenty of water and humidity, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday and Holidays ahead XXXX
Thanks for your reply! I guess I'm trying to say I'm water propping these right now and the soft brown/black ends really make it seem like they're rotting in the water. Any tips for propping these? I know for next time I'll probably leave the segments a bit longer and leave them more intact - I tried to reshape them to fit into my prop cups (old Starbucks plastic containers filled with leca 😅)
@@NoClue1472 haha yes Starbucks containers come in handy, I always find the best way for propagating them is in water, they root well but take a little bit longer than the other Epiphytes to root but will root in about 3-6 weeks, I change the water every 3rd day to stop the water becoming stagnant, and keep them in a bright position but away from direct sunlight, good luck with your propagation and happy holidays to you XXX

Hi Anabel :-D yes you can propagate these plants by taking cuttings and allowing the cut part to dry 'callus' over for a few days and then planting the cutting in a well draining soil ix, you can also root them in water too as these plants are epiphytic cacti and can be rooted in water the same way as Christmas and Easter cacti can :-D XXXX
Hi there, its possible the the thin stems might be 'canes' that Epiphyllums sometimes send out as a support for them and this is normal for them to grow these, but it could also be down to low light levels, its very difficult to say without photos but if your Epiphyllum is in a well lit spot then its most likely because the thin stems are 'canes' the plant produces for support and nothing to worry about
