It is so sad none of these ships survived long enough to become museums. They were the pinnacle of naval design - nothing really competitive in combat exists till the fast battleships come into service.
HMS Repulse is the 2nd warship of the battlefleet to get a major reconstruction so it was before the decision was taken to look at re engining, replacing FC and upping the max elevation of the main guns. Also too early for the 4.5" but she got 2 twin experimental 4" BD mounts which turned out to be bad enough they removed them in 1938. It's a shame they did use that refit (1938-1939) to replace the triple 4" and single 4" with the 4" twin HA/LA, my count gives 17 (3x3 + 6x1) vs 18 (9x2). Still she got some worthwhile deck protection upgrades
it's the need to have a secondary to engage destroyers, etc... if a dual purpose twin 4.7in or 4.5in (i.e. capable of doing -10 to +80) I think then she might have upgraded, but the 4in HA was not enough stopping power for a Battle Cruiser's secondaries...
@@DrAlexClarke The 4"/45 QF Mark XVI HA MK XIX mounting fires a slightly heavier shell a little faster than the 4"'/45 BL MK IX carried in the T1 triples or the 4"/45 QF MK V single HA MK III that she actually carried. Yeah ideally I'd want something a bit heavier but switching to the 4.5" would be significantly more complex. Just if she is to continue to be armed with 4" i would want the whole battery to be capable to engage aircraft.
Maybe the transition for separate ammunition would be more complex than i have allowed for but the turn around times for HMS Hood getting the 4"/45 MK XVI HA/LA MKXIX twins seems fairly brief

The 15" guns of the forward turret is going to obliterate that seagull.
Thank you for not filming this from a hot tub.
Yeah, I was selective on those... but if I had the right scale models a hot tub might make a really great stand in for the Atlantic...🤔
