  • Finding a rattle on your car used to be a big problem. Somebody showed me this technique and I’ve been using it ever cents. When you are driving and you hear a rattle when you hit something you know the rattles there but when you bring it in the garage how do you replicate the rattle. Well here’s a nice easy technique. Jack up the car so the suspension is floating free then to emulate the bump in the road take a sledgehammer and hit the tire. This will make The Rattle reappear. Now it’s a process of illumination have somebody hit the wheel while you go underneath the car and put your hand on each car part until the rattle stops. It’s amazing how well this works. In the video I go through the process on how to find a rattle and sure enough it worked just like he usually does.

I had some very loud rattling and clanging noises coming from my front drivers side when on rough roads and hitting small bumps. After looking into some videos, I took the wheel off and did an inspection of the suspension system parts but couldn’t find anything that stood out to me. The lug nuts seemed a little loose taking them off so I thought maybe that could possibly be the problem, but after putting everything back on to torque specs, it was still making the noise. I felt I was at the end of the road of my capabilities so I figured to take it in for service, but I found this method and it worked great to get it resolved. I was by myself and I banged on some of the suspension parts with a rubber mallet. I started hitting the ball joint area and heard some rattling. I started feeling around while hitting parts and then noticed one of the small bolts that fastens the brake caliper onto the piston bolts was completely missing. I checked the other bolt and it was even loose. The front pads were changed only about 6 months ago by the previous owner, so the shop that did them (Pep Boys) just didn’t tighten them enough. I replaced the fastening bolt and now the noises are fixed! I went ahead and tightened the caliper bolts on the passenger side as well. This was the first time I ever diagnosed and fixed something related to noises in the brake / suspension area - it was an enjoyable small victory! Thanks for the helpful video!

Bro, I was having a weird clunking noise when stopping and a pop when I'd back up and turn slowly. Was driving me crazy. So I did like you said, went and bought a rubber mallet and got under my car and just started smacking suspension parts. Sure enough, I hit one of the lower control arms and it did not sound like the others. Turns out the bolt had backed out just a little bit. Tightened it up and sure as shit, solved both problems. Rubber mallet guy for the win!! Thanks brother. 100% will be using this going forward. 👍

Interesting! My car had a similar problem, I think one of the suspension parts was aged and worn out so that the rubber parts did not absorb the shock properly. Of course non of the repair shops had any clue to the problem. They even said it must be the clutch! If they did this, probably I would have avoided 3 years of irritation... In the end I sold my car...

You will need to get new unrusted backing plate, use PB and proper bit\driver\socket if there is any small bolt(s) holding the hub assembly backing plate on.
Dust shield; backing plate. Part of wheel hub assembly, sometimes pinched in between wheel bearing hub and knuckle flat. Smoooshed with so much torque that they fracture their paint coating firstly in these spots and begin to rust first in this bearing bolt hidden spot up behind the knuckle; then they fracture loose and rattle or will curl\bend and rub into brake rotor and just need bending back.. If your backing plates are wedged between bearing and knuckle (press), then you will want new bearing same time. Do not re-press a removed bearing hub if it needs pressed. Simple bolt on axle'less hubs are just 4 bolts and pass through backing plate and are reused. There's only a few ways. Just look it up to be sure..

This is the worst way I’ve ever heard to find a rattle, taking the weight off the suspension will make it completely different conditions then when you’re driving. If this had been a ball, joint, tie rod, strut, wheel bearing, axle etc, all the things, the typically make noise, you never would’ve found to doing that.

This doesn't seem useful for rattles inside the car (it seems like the suspension and jackstands will absorb the hammering). I found a lot of links by just googling find interior rattles. However, I will definitely be trying this someday, for suspension rattles, thanks!!
