you really know how to do this right. I set up my first vivarium over two years ago and I'm finally going to re do it right this time. thanks for the help
Awesome video as always. Love the "voice over". Definitely keep this as an ongoing series! Ordered some of the filter media to try on my next tank. Thanks for the inspiration
Loved the macro shots. Not enough of that on YT. Super enjoyable watch. Maybe between now and the 4 month update, you can do a quick runaround of the upkeep/maintenance of the build (lighting, timing, misting, drainage, etc.) I did see a hole in the back right of the tank in Part 1, but would be interested to see how that is connected etc.
these videos have really helped me build my vivariums, thanks for the amazing work, just got my first two tanks completed... fully BIOACTIVE of course.
Looks Great !!! Of course we want to see more updates Troy can't wait to see the new residents. The camera looks great the detail on the frog is so sharp. Keep up your amazing work!!
Keep up the videos. Very helpful for me being a beginner in the vivarium building. Love your work. The drylock looks amazing in my tank! Thanks for the tip. :)
Love the details on the frogs (definitely continue using that macro)and yes we would love an update on the tank. You may have posted it already since I am late here. I will check to see if you in fact have posted an update.
Hi Troy, could you please make an update video on that vivarium? How is your overall experience with hygrolon? I read some posts, that it is not suited to grow moss on it. Greetings from Germany!
I’m really trying to do something like this but I’m starting small with just a 2 gallon jar and a few plants I got from Josh’s frogs some springtails and isopods, but I don’t see them around. I see a lot of the springtails though.
I'm going to build a 4x2x2 ft vivarium using an aquarium the filter pads as a base is so much better and easier than substrate as a drainage layer. I currently keep Arena Blanca darts and will be using this style build 🙌🙌
Silly to ask, but can you post a video when you can about how to setup a bromeliad? I’ve been struggling on 1. Keeping it alive 2. Setting it into place
Congratulations on the excellent setup and the final job. Are you able to put the list of the plant names?!! Specially the orchids. They look awesome. Thanks in advance,
Hey Troy, i love your Videos. I am doing some Terrariums too at the Moment and would reallly like to Know which lights you use in your Terrariums? How much Kelvin do they have?
That tank is so cool! Goals for sure. I definitely want to see the update in 4 months. Crazy how long the background takes to fill. I have one that is still about 80% of java moss after 8 months.
Tank is awesome, can I ask where are you getting your water pump, I have looked on Amazon and a few other places but not having any luck for the size you are talking about.
Thanks, yeah appearantly people from my Instagram live streams and went and bought them all up lol! Just search on Amazon for a 80gph submersible pump.... something should be comparable
Loving all yours videos. Question, I start 6 month's ago and many people tell me to remove my moss, for all bacterial can create and is not good for dart frogs. Is that true?
Curious how you plant your larger aroids and philodendrons? Are they just bare root in the moss and filter media or substrate? No soil? Thank you, love your channel!
Hi Troy, have you noticed any adverse effects from using just the sponge filter at the bottom of this tank rather than the usual drainage layer & liner etc?
Really enjoyed that! Beautiful images! Like to see that update in the future! (Question..also silicone between the driftwood and the foam/ Hydrolon?) Really detailed images!! Keep sending them.👍🏻
Loved these videos troy , im going to do a build like this for my Mossy frogs , what cameras are you using ? and lighting ,? your growth rate on those plants is fantastic , really enjoy your content and would love to see an update on this build 👍
How do the plants grow long term without nutrients from substrate? I know many of these plants do just fine with air light and water but some of them I thought would need more. Absolutely gorgeous tank and perfect for the frogs
Hi, a very beautiful terrarium! I would love to have regular updates on how it is doing and particularly how the plants that you glued are doing. Also I have a couple of questions. You do not use anything to warm up your terrarium ? And do you use any fertilizer for your orchids ? Thank you
steven curbow the tanks are drilled, so when the water level gets to certain height it drains off... the most water I’ll have in the bottom of the tank is about 1.5”
@@TroyGoldberg I see the drain hole you are referring to when you build the vivarium! I look forward to hearing more about what you think of the pond filter. If it works out well my next vivarium I would love to build one with a lower false bottom like this one.
I know this is an older video but I am wondering about your light placement. I am currently getting ready to replace my lighting with a Skylight mini set up. Are you setting them directly on top, or hanging them ? Are you using any type of controller? I have been able to grow most plants without issue but moss does give me some troubles. At this point I'm thinking the light is too bright as my moss does well in shaded areas and not so good out in the open. This is in an Exo Terra 18w x 24T
@@TroyGoldberg Can you possibly give me a link to one of them ? I have a old 60 G tank that I am about to start working on. Think 75 G tank/w one foot cut off of the length. I'm just not really happy with the height of it. But I have measured and found that after using 5" of substrate that I can reach the bottom in order to work in the vivarium. This limits how tall the plants can be. So a vivarium like you have where the front comes off would allow for taller plants. Been using a regular 10 G tank for a year just to see if I can keep it alive. No point in doing a 60 G if you can't keep the 10 G alive.
I just found your video! Do you know what species of orchids you added to this tank? I’d love to add some to the one I’m building, but am having difficulty finding the smaller species.
Really nice! Inspirational as I begin the first build. How do the active micro bio-fauna do with the pond filter bottom instead of traditinal drainage layer, barrier and substrate?
So there’s still moss and leaf litter and sweet pods, micro fauna doesn’t necessarily need dirt and substrate, They need correct conditions and things to feed on... which they have
1st of all, i would surely like update video's on this one. I just got a second hand tank which i want to use for 2 D. leucomelas and i am gonna take this tank as an example to build mine ( coz it looks so awesome!!!). But got some questions... What lightning do you use? Can you list the plants u used, coz i can't get the right names (not english speaking, sorry...). How do you secure the bromeliads? And last one, do you just put the moss on the wood or glue it? Thanx in advance and sorry for the many questions... I just want to make sure i know everything before i start the build.
I love this layout of your vivarium, I have two questions though. 1 : If i understand correctly you did not make this vivarium bioactive, how do you keep it clean ? 2: In your build you used this sort of filter material as a drainage layer, how does that work out ? i have 5 tanks right now and all are bioactive. I would like to try a different way of building a new vivarium for my frogs because the vivarium they are in right now seems to become a little to small for them. Because i made these tanks bioactive they do very well, and so i was wondering if that would also be the case if i use your method of the build. Not that i doubt it will work, but will it sustain for a long time. I hope you can give me some answers because i really need to start my build. Greetings from The Netherlands, Stephan.
In my tanks I use mainly cuttings of plants from other established tanks, which have springtails and isopods in there. So the tanks have lots of microfauna. The tanks stay clean, the foam sponge filter mat has been working out very well... I’ve been using it for a little over a year and so far, no problems
Can you please reply to me with the name of the plants?Im not a native speaker and its a bit hard to understand with the exception of java moss..did you glue the moss on the branch?
Troy, this is a fantastic video. Subscribed to the channel. I would love to know what you are using for the terrarium. I am about to kick off a build similar to yours and I am going to want a tank of equal size. I know it is a lot of work, but if you make instructional videos like this in the future, I know that people like me would benefit greatly from a “parts” list to keep it all straight. Thank you so much for taking the time to put the video together and share!
Hey man, looks great! Do you ever put planters in your background? I’ve tried in my last couple tanks and filled with sphagnum but always dry up and barely absorb water.
Just found your channel, Troy. Love the work you do. But I have a question: 4 months later, how do you think the tank is behaving without an actual substrate. I'm starting a new vivarium in a few weeks and I'm very curious what you think about the foam "substrate"
Thanks, Troy. That answer is wonderful, but makes my decision much more difficult as I just watched your drip wall video last night and now I want one of those, but I'll have to try to figure out how to incorporate a pump into a slanted bottom tank. Ordering a tank from Protean this week, but now I may just say forget the slanted bottom so I can have some standing water along the edges.
I do a lot of field herping and every time I flip a rock or board with lots of isopods underneath, I have to tell anyone around me how BIOACTIVE it is!!
PLEASE keep us updated on the terrarium...I can't believe how beautiful this turned out already!!! would love to see more ideas!!!
