Awesome job Troy!!! When you said you were going to overhaul the tank I thought you were just going to replant it differently. Once again you showed a new technique and built an awesome vivarium. Nice work you always are stepping up your skills. Happy Frogging.
I always wondered how you would strip down a vivarium to start it over like this. Everyone says it’s possible but I have yet to see anyone else actually do it
Your works are always beautiful. Simple, elegant, balanced, natural, effective. An excellent result in a few skilful steps. I tried to make a terrarium, luckily without frogs, spending relatively more than expected, good in theory but with many problems and a mediocre aesthetic result. Congratulations, you are very good and you have great skills👏👏👏
Hey Troy, love all the videos - they’re essentially my bible for vivarium construction. Wanted to run a question by you; do you add isopods/springtails in the aquarium sponge substrate and if so what’s the success rate?
The cork will only last a very minimal amount of time. It is eaten by the insects and the rest rots away. I did that 25 years ago. Greetings from Germany
Awesome video... Got me thinking definitely love A bunch of tanks way doing backgrounds...!!! Have to try it with my Azureus Viv their tank needs a definite make over...lol
I noticed you don't use soil or ABG but rather put moss and leaves directly on the sponge filter. Where do the isopods and springtails live? I though they needed soil to live, but maybe that's not always true?
Hey Troy! I’m currently building my first vivarium without leca balls using your method with filter foam at as my filter media. I’m very close to finishing and thinking about plants. Just wondering if I need to focus on certain types of plants or if you’ve had success with all types in this type of build. Do you use any substrate at all to kickstart your plants? Thanks!
Yo Troy, do you have any advice on a low growing moss/liverwort that I could culture and eventually move to wood? I’m talking like cork or something for orchid mounts. Light and humidity ain’t a problem, I just don’t know where to get this or what would do well.
Would that foam false bottom have to be cycled periodically? Or do you just siphon out the water? I’ve never seen this before and would be interested in trying it out. Thanks.
In your video on lighting that you did a few years back you mentioned a knock off version of the Jungle Dawn lights. Do you have a link or name I can look into?
old school back ground looks great. Super saturated (wet). Is that a good thing? No rot or mold issues? No foot rot on the animals? how often do you drain out the tank to remove extra water and keep it from flooding? I like the false bottom, but I didn't see a drain. What your trick? #TotsNewby
Look closer there’s a drain… tank is always draining, never backs up, a lot of the clips were taken after a fresh misting, the leaf litter dries out inbetween misting cycles. The tanks have good ventilation. No rot, no mold, no foot rot
Troy what’s your recommendation on using UVB light for poison fart frogs. I’m starting to get into the hobby and I’m getting confounding information. Currently I have 3 cinnamon tree frogs (I know they are not dart frogs) that I keep with a UVB light, and 2 azureus froglets that I keep in a grow out bin with no UVB light. Should I move them into enclosure with uvb light too or is it okay to keep them without it as froglets?
the Syngonium Rayii always goes nuts in my tank, it spreads its shoots far and wide, but always remains cool looking. kinda like marcgravia impossible to annoy me. and if it spawns in a place whrere I dont want it, it becomes a new houseplant^^ edit: check out Alocasia Jacklyn if you gert the chance, should match your taste.
It’s ridiculously expensive right now in the states, also personally, I don’t like the lack of freedom as far as design with it… just creates pretty much a flat wall
Serious question..Is there any danger of the frogs impaling themselves on the toothpicks tho? And how you keep or do you even..keep springtails and ispods on the foam pads? I was under the impression they're a requirement and alao required a soil base... i feel big dumb all of a sudden🤣
I do usually break the tips of the tooth picks so they’re not pointy. Spring tails don’t need soil… the need humidity and food(mold)… they are loaded amongst the leaf litter.
How long does the background last? Given it is real and plays a role in the bioactive setup slowly degrading. If its many years, I'm looking forward to do it myself!
@@TroyGoldberg It’s a really good idea though because its organic, allows plants to root on/into the background, it’s a relatively fast process compairing to a lot of other backgrounds. It’s probably also one of the cheaper optipns for a decent size enclosure Do give us an update on how it holds up! :D
@@TroyGoldberg How thick are the slabs your using? Currently viewing some on a local website, no additives and they have an example of laying them under rooftiles, 50-60 years of lifespan without loosing its properties. This one is only 3cm thick though and your’s looks about 4-5.
Yeah there were a few cuttings of it in there… that main one didn’t thrive… but there’s some other cutting of it on there alive behind those broms on the right
Hi Troy, I am a bigger fan of this method since it appears to use more natural materials instead of polyurethane foam. What would you say are its downsides?
Yeah I like that about it too…. Even tho I’m still using some foam…. The only real downside I can see is, longevity… not entirely sure how long the cork will last before it starts to break down and fall apart. So we shall see on that front
My face lit up when ‘6 months later’ popped up! Absolutely love how this tank matured!

One thing is like to see that you haven’t covered yet is showing how you drill and plumb your tanks … maybe include it in your next rebuild !
Great video, great setup, great advice.

Yeah I figured it’s not as durable as foam and drylok… I’ve had some running for about 2 years so far with no significant degradation.

Where do you get that moss that’s growing all over the logs ?? I’ve been trying. To find it.

I love your videos. What's your opinion on substrate vs. just sponge filter for the vivarium floor?
I haven’t used substrate in 4 years if that answers your question

Where did you get the compressed cork panels from?
Zoro
I bought some off of Amazon but they had a smoky scent. I think they were called soundproof cork paneling
Any issues now or in the past with the carbonized cork?
Not that I’ve seen
Tory I like to talk to you about background material, So how can we do that
is that an old protein tank? Well done btw!
Yes it is!
Where do you get the compressed cork you used for the background in the USA? I can't find it that thick.

Why don’t you use Treefern as back ground? Keeps a lot of moisture in gets moss on it.
It’s ridiculously expensive right now in the states, also personally, I don’t like the lack of freedom as far as design with it… just creates pretty much a flat wall
In Europe the price is not really bad on the moment and love to work with is. Specifically the rond and half round parts of it.
DeWalt should send you a check.
Hahaha
Is this your favorite method for backgrounds?
Not sure if it’s my favorite… it’s definitely the easiest and fastest while still being good looking

What's the reasoning behind planting most of your plants not on the ground?
I like leaving the ground pretty much open for feeding and what not… just personal preference. Creates depth
