- Let's review the last album King Crimson released before disbanding for seven years. We'll see why, 42 years later, "Red" still packs an incredible punch.
I have a Ko-Fi page now. If you like my videos, you can support my work for the price of a coffee (no commitments).

One of the most wonderful LP's of All Time , It's an emotional rollercoaster..Just a perfect piece.
"I believe that "One More Red Nightmare" is about one person's fear of flying and their solution (ride a bus) to the problem.
I remember I was playing Red on my sisters stereo and the bass at the beginning of Fallen Angel popped her speaker fuses. I totally freaked out.
Oh boy, I had something similar, but not as severe, happen the first time I played it. I had turned the volume up on the opening track to get it nice and loud, then that bass chord from the start of Fallen Angel just about blew my eardrums out. Not as damaging as a blown fuse, but it made me feel like there was an explosion going off in my head. They definitely didn't pull any punches on this record's mix, lol.
Richard Palmer-James is a seriously underrated lyricists. He wrote the lyrics for this line up’s trio of albums. The Nightwatch, Lament, One More Red Nightmare, etc. Great symbolist lyric writing. This lineup wouldn’t have been as mysterious yet muscular without his contribution.
Thank you. I agree.
John Wetton wrote One More Red Nightmare. But your point still stands.
Well done indeed. You gave a good description of the spooky bridge section in Starless. I remember listening to UK's John Peel programme when he played One more red nightmare, I was completely blown away by the opening riff. The 73-74 King Crimson were the best incarnation of the band for me. This album was as far as Robert Fripp could take King Crimson so he called it quits and the band went into hibernation. Red has made a huge contribution to the soundtrack of my life.
You pointed to the wrong people when you introduced the band. You mixed up Bruford and Wetton.
Uh oh. Thanks for catching this. Looks like a case of on-camera nervousness :\
@@RoyUnit Good review, still. I need to find this vinyl reissue.
I always thought of Starless as a more philosophical idea that when we die we go nowhere and are trapped in a void of darkness and nothingness forever and have no thought or future direction, ei starless and bible black. Truly dark depressing stuff, but genius none the less.
I just want to share a few interesting facts I've read here and there (mostly the elephant talk wiki) about this masterpiece
Just adding it for the sake of this awesome review (thank you so much
Every listen makes me love this album even more. Such dark gorgeousness and gorgeousity. “Fallen Angel” v. “Starless” might be the eternal quandary.
I've read an interview with Bruford explaining the "gong" on "One More Red Nightmare" is actually a cymbal with a crack in it.
He had a rack behind him with various things to hit, including a metal sheet used for the garbage can lid sound. My friend used to replace one of his cymbals with an actual metal garbage can lid when we played this.
great review... that record gives me shivers when I am listening to it! And it is very well recorded, one of my favorites actually! But not many people I know do listen to this kind of music...
I love this album.
Might be my second favorite only behind Wish You Were Here.
The Starless live version of Radical Action might be the best live version for a song ever.
What pisses me off is that they were in my country last year, but I didn't know them :/
Currently praying for them to come back next year.
Amazing review man, really one of the best made reviews ive seen on youtube, doesnt hurt that this is an absolutely perfect album too
What a thoughtful review. This was my first time seeing one of your videos. I’m going to check some more out. I love all of the 72-74 KC. Tons of live material from this era is also available.
One of the best albums by anyone ever. I see it as the father of some of my other favorites like: Songs for the Deaf (Queens of the Stone Age), Them Crooked Vultures (self titled) and Deloused in the Comatorium (Mars Volta).
Great review. Thank you for sharing your love and insight.
Bruford is front middle not top left Top left is Wetton.
Top 3 for me right now, I dont even listen to it anymore since I want to savor the experience, its that special to me.
Red is so hard to find on Vinyl . Only found one in my country and it was so expensive that I could be a new phone with that money

He used the phrase "a different kind of tension" - is a Buzzcocks review on the horizon?
The "end-of-Fallen-Angel" arpeggio riff was salvaged from an earlier arrangement of Easy Money (refer to the Zoom Club and Hull College live albums).
Moonchild in its original release was nearly 12 minutes long - Fripp the rewriter of history has been releasing edits for years, confining the full version to deluxe-edition bonus-track status.
The unedited Providence improvisation is on the Great Deceiver live album
good review. just like you did for "Nursery Cryme". Both are long-time favorites of mine.
Most excellent review!
"Red" is still as badass as it was when it was first released. Not an easy feat.
Red is just unique
I can't count how many times I get goosebumps every time I listen to this album.
My fav Crimson album and line up. Great review and info on the band. I love the album cover.-Lou
Great review!
You should check out Wetton and Bruford’s next collaboration the self titled debut U.K.
This is great album. It full changed my peace reception.
They split because Fripp wanted to. He decided to move on to being "Mobile Intelligent Unit". They others didn't want to split, they loved it. Fripp's eccentricity is part of the genius of King Crimson but helps make their history somewhat erratic.
Lots of bands went through artist changes back then. I quickly got sick of Deep Purple cause they change members like i changed underware. I saw the Red concert in Ohio. Aerosmith opened. Not a good fit but with so much music diversity back then it happened. I was a big fan of Genesis Yes but this album got me into more harder edge music. I got to see Genesis in 73. Gabriel was great.
I really didnt know if they realized success with the Red release. I moved to a city that had little music scene. Word of mouth is how music was shared. I know it must be hard for kids to understand but we would talk face to face with people in the 70s.
I’ve been a huge fan of 72-74 Crimson in particular for a while now, but I still have never gotten the chance to hear the songs Providence or Fallen Angel, And I don’t think I’ve ever heard the album version of One More Red Nightmare. I’d like to get it on vinyl so I can just have them, but I’m kind of wary because to be honest I don’t really like the album version of Starless. Violin > Saxophone, y’know?
Wetton...Bruford....Fripp. Don't need nobody else. 😎
I'm not a Crimson fan, but this album... wow... beautiful, complex, emotional, absolutely perfect. I recently bought the european 2013 vinyl pressing and it sounds fantastic. Great review BTW!
I've always thought starless was about a blind person. I remember reading interviews where fripp was not cool with even how many of the fans took their music talking about his fans being dressed in all black. He also wasnt cool with the whole prog rock lable calling King Crimson a heavy metal band ( which in that period of the band - wasnt too far off ) Ref has been one of my fave albums since j was a kid. The 2 albums before that were awsome but Red seemed solid and straight ahead
It's weird this hasn't been taken down, or even claimed because of the use of Crimson's music. It is fair use though because you are criticizing it but when you played "The Court of the Crimson King" you weren't criticizing it.
If you think the video author exaggerated on adjectives, just listen to the album
Dude you messed up the names...no big deal of course hahah. Great album, great music, and great band.
Oh no 😬. LOL I actually realized this after it had been uploaded. A case of the nerves while on camera I guess.
The title track ‘rayad’
so you're saying you hated the album?
2:40 8:55 14:50
Okay, now do Starless and Bibleback lol
