While the main character was explicitly designed NOT to form emotional relationships, Adler's infatuation with Falke was programmed into him and is effectively his entire personality. It's a neat parallel IMO, suggesting that the Eusan nation's attempt to force people into roles makes everyone suffer regardless of whether they follow those roles or reject them.
