My Guinea pig has been trouble breathing and we took her to the vet she had to be hospitalized and it cost us over 3k but she’s getting a lot better now

Oh gosh I’m so sorry. It’s always so scary having a pet go through that. My dog is epileptic and it’s so scary watching them. For those with newly diagnosed epileptic pets: I’ve found that my dog will almost predict when he’ll have one. He goes off water and try’s to be near me. Thankfully we’re managed now, but before medication he would kinda sniff water but wouldn’t drink it. He would eat though! No problem eating. Maybe in Guinea pigs they would go off food for an hour or something. But it would still be harder to notice. Both because we keep them in cages (and sometimes separate rooms) and because their timeframe for going off food or behaving oddly would have to be shorter to accommodate their metabolism. I’m so grateful you made this video! Seizure safety is important and we don’t often hear of pet Guinea pigs having seizures.
Aloha dear Sarah, thank goodness Pedro has recovered. I just had the scare of my life last Fri. as my Squeaker all of a sudden had ,”Head Tilt.” I’ve had Piggies before and never even heard of such a thing. I knew something was wrong and immediately rushed him to emergency where the Vet. gave him Meloxicam and he showed signs of improvement quickly. He’s to continue with the Meloxicam for 7-10 days. I am keeping a close watch on him and am so grateful that my baby is OK. Thank you for your wonderful channel 🐹❤️.
Oh no so sorry Pedro has been through it hasn't he, let's hope he doesn't have any more and it was very helpful sharing what was happening to him. I think it can be very easy for others to say it sounds like this or that but there's nothing like getting the professional to assess his behaviour. As in humans there are a number of similarities to conditions but when you are experiencing issues with our furbabies it's just very scary to deal with without panic. This morning we saw our guinea pig, Biscuit, having kind of rapid spasms where she didn't look in control of her body and then dropping or falling onto her side with one back leg splayed out. The whole thing lasted maybe 10-15 seconds. Afterwards she seemed fine but a little confused herself as to what happened. I gave her a fuss and she carried on with her day. We didn't notice any nystagmus and she wasn't spinning in circles or anything. When it was happening her stomach area was kind of moving up and down a lot and we kind of wondered if it was maybe just trapped wind or bad hiccups. But at the same time it seemed somehow different than that. I've seen her do this maybe twice before - the last time was at least 6 months ago. She was absolutely fine afterwards that times too. I really don't know if there's anything more we should be doing other than keeping an eye on her. They stay in the living room so we get to spend a lot of time with them. I love Biscuit like she was my own child, and just want her to be as happy and healthy as possible.
Oh my! Poor Pedro 😭. This is such a scary moment and I hope he stays healthy and this never happens again! These things happen. I usually make sure my piggies are not dehydrated to prevent seizures and strokes. I’m so sorry for you!! Sending prayers 🙏😢
My Peruvian piggie, Gus, used to have seizures, too. He would flop over one side, and his legs on one side were outstretched while his legs on the other side were kind of scrambling as if to get back on his feet. A few minutes later, he'd look slightly shaken, but overall back to normal. I think he was around 5 years old (he was adopted with 3 previous homes, so I don't know what his exact age was) when it started, and he lived to around 8 years. Just like you, I did a lot of research online (granted this was around 10 years ago, so more information is probably available), and I went to the vet multiple times. Ear problems, genetic problems, fungal, etc were all on the table for possible causes, but unfortunately we never could get the reason for his seizures. Gus lived for a few years with them happening sporadically. The seizures didn't happen too often, but they definitely scared the crap outta me when they did.

I was very sad because my little one died two weeks ago or now to know what the reason was I found this video suddenly and read comments that were I had the same condition and felt bad. I knew the reason. The vet did nothing and did not even know about his medical condition. Thank God.
I am so sorry you and Pedro had to go through this and I am also happy that Pedro is alright now. Mine did not share the same fate. My guinea pig Patches got some food down the wrong pipe and when we got her to the vet it was too late she died at 4pm on the 4th of August.

That happened to my piggie and I thought he had a stroke. He kept trying to walk toward me but couldn't. Shaking and walking as if he was dizzy. Couldn't stand up. I kept him with me the whole night long and it seemed by morning he was ok. He was eating and walking around.
Last year I adopted a guinea pig from the rescue, Josefien was 3 years old then. She was very tiny and skinny and only weighed 840g. After a few weeks, she had a seizure. It was on a sunday and I send an email to the rodent proffessor of the university and I got an appointment the next day at 8 am. Josefien was wobbeling and dragged her behind legs and her behind was soaked in urine. I also was really worried. By the time she was at the vet she seemed to be normal again, not wobbeling and not dragging her legs . The professor did a full examination and found nothing that could have caused the seizure. Josefien lost some weigh during her recovery, but now she is a thriving guinea pig of 1300g and didn't have any seizures. She celebrated her 4th birthday. Hope that Pedro will recover and let's hope that it was a one-time experience.

We had a cat that started having seizures when she was younger, she would have one every couple of months for about a year and then she just stopped. She never had any issues from it and lived to be an old kitty. Hoping Pedro's situation is similar and he doesn't have any more. It's scary when you don't know what's going on!

I’m so sorry that both you & Pedro have gone through seizures. I have experienced seizures with my beagle Bo. They’re very traumatic to witness. Our vet wanted to put him on meds, which are tough on the organs & would require frequent bloodwork. I started using cbd on him. The same one I use on my piggies, prior to vet visits, nail trims etc (The same cbd gel pen used by Saskia) A year later, without a seizure, my order was placed too late & he was without it for 3 days. Sure enough, he seized! Proof to me that the cbd was working! It’s worth looking into & could work just as well, as a preventative in piggies. Wishing you & your herd well. {{hugs}}
Phew! Slight emotional rollercoaster but a huge relief to hear Pedro is keeping well now and that you are ok too, as much as you can be! No herd of our own yet but really interesting to hear what you learned and the actions to take if this ever happened. I think idiopathic (no obvious cause, I think that is, long time since my biomedical days! seizures are possible in humans and other animals so hopefully Pedro will continue without any more. If it helps potential owners to think carefully before assuming piggies are simple starter pets too, then it’s all worthwhile. Wishing you all well x

I am so happy and relieved that Pedro seems to be okay. I noticed that he looks like he has gained weight too, which heartens me! He is such a complete sweetheart piggy. Thank you for this wonderful and very informative video, though I am so saddened and sorry that you had to go through such a horrific scare. I have to say, when you first said you didn't know what it was or what to do, I said - how could you know? I had this actually happen to my dad, and I cannot say how traumatized I was by witnessing it and some other things. I keep thinking that it is kind of unfair and sad that we can't just go to an emergency room in most places for our piggies like we do for people (even that is an "adventure" and not always an option). My answer for everything on earth here is "call 911!" I do love at the end of the video, you could see Pedro happily drinking water with Phoebe.
So sorry this happened to precious little Pedro! He did have a tough life, Thank God he's got you as an owner! Someone else might not have given him proper or thorough care, but please know you're in my prayers, and YES, it definitely works, I've done it for my own piggies! I was sick for a week and my parents had to take care of my piggies for me and I came back to my one piggie not able to walk well… she slowly stopped being able to walk at all… I’m worried it’s seizures and strokes so I’m getting educated on possibilities
Thank you very much for sharing this experience with us all. I have never experienced anything like this. The only reference I'm aware of is through scottysanimals, when one of his rescued boys had a severe mite infestation and was going into seizures. Luckily he managed to pull him through. So it's good to be aware that this can happen without any known cause too. I hope Pedro completely recovers without any further incidents. Wishing you and all your piggies the best of health.

Hi Sarah. Just watching this video again as I think this could be what happened to one of my piggies this morning. She was laying down on her front in the run and I could see what I think were her shoulder blades moving. I picked her up and she seemed very floppy and a bit unresponsive. Took her, as an emergency, to the vets whereupon the vet thought a seizure was possible as she seemed to be paddling her legs up and down. Unfortunately, about 5-6 mins after arriving, she passed away. I am absolutely heartbroken after having her for nearly 6 and a half years. Luna was an awesome piggy and one of my very first. Pretty girl too. She was a silver grey agouti. RIP my little moonbeam. 😭😭😭

Thank you so much for this video it is always helpful for me to be able to learn more about guinea pigs as I have 8 of my own. I am currently on holiday and my piggies are being looked after by a family member who has some experience with guinea pigs, however I am still worried about as I hate leaving them and miss them so much

Omg I’m so sorry🥺🥺 my first piggie had seizures!! my mom woke me up one morning and said “somethings wrong with DJ” i was panicking and we took her to the vet where she was prescribed medicine but as soon as we pulled into the driveway she unfortunately passed :( I understand the stress you’ve gone through!!❤️

And she had upper respiratory the dog said she was all right so to stop her meds aren't antibiotic so we did however she started making a weird noise and she kept jerking her head to one side and it's really really scary. And it was like she had a hard time reading through her nose like her nostrils were kind of blocked up but I started her back on her meds and she pulled through this. So I definitely got to get her in to see the vet.
My family had a beagle that had seizures. The breeder said she would take him back, give us another dog, but they would put him down. He was on seizure meds until he died. I hope they find something for sweet Pedro.
Sadly my piggy passed this Monday morning I believe it was a stroke. At the time it didn’t even cross my mind I honestly just tried my best to get him to respond he did barely eventually but passed away a little later… it was a learning experience and I hope to be better prepared if it ever happens in the future. No vet was open at this time. The sad thing is he was only around 3 so I didn’t believe anything like this could happen.
The strange eye-tracking is something that elderly dogs also have, it's not generally a seizure in my experience with my pug. I was told by my veterinarian that it's a nervous issue due to age. I hope Pedro doesn't have any more "episodes", because he's such a beautiful boy! I hope it's nothing serious. I will be following his status as best I can, and send you and your herd lots of positive energy.

I am pretty certain that my guinea pig Gus had a seizure, the symptoms you describe sound very similar. I rushed him to the emergency vets but unfortunately, little Gus didn't make it 💔
You was lucky as my charlie had one i believe and died a few hours later and couldnt find a vet as it was a sunday… He went floppy and barely moved and sat in corners…
This can be so scary. My dog has epilepsy. When she 1st had them I was crazy scared. I thought she was choking. They didn't last long. She had another 2 weeks later. I went to the vet too. I had to watch for them again. When she had a few more she was tested. Now she is on phenobarbital. Lowest dose. We also give her CBD oil with a small amount of THC. This has helped so much. She hasn't had one in a yr.

I thought my poor bubbles was trying to reach a itchy spot and had a muscle spasm. Then it kept happening......😓 started off with one here and there but now it happens several times a day
I know that had to be scarey for you and Pedro. I had a female schipperke that had idiopathic seizures. One was brought on by a hot day, the second was about two weeks afterwards but we were home. Phenobarbital is usually one med for seizures but trying to get a dosage so small for a piggy might be tricky. Did you notice Pedro's eye movement when it drifted to side then corrected itself, was it a bit jerky or a smooth motion! I know that nystagmus can occur when some things (brain electrical system) are disrupted (misfires). I pray Pedro has no more issues. Seeing a seizure in any pet is truly unnerving and make sure feel so helpless.
I am sorry you had been through that. I gave it a immediate like which I dont do with out watching. I now wonder if there is such a thing as a mini stroke I had it happen to me in hospital at the beginning of the year. I was diagnoised with a stroke and recovered in 3 days.
I sorry to hear about your mini stroke, and glad you were able to recover quickly! It sounded like piggies are similar and can have mini strokes, but the vet advice seemed to point to a seizure. We are still wondering!

Josefien was wobbeling and dragged her behind legs and her behind was soaked in urine. I also was really worried. By the time she was at the vet she seemed to be normal again, not wobbeling and not dragging her legs . The professor did a full examination and found nothing that could have caused the seizure. Josefien lost some weigh during her recovery, but now she is a thriving guinea pig of 1300g and didn't have any seizures. She celebrated her 4th birthday. Hope that Pedro will recover and let's hope that it was a one-time experience.

We had a cat that started having seizures when she was younger, she would have one every couple of months for about a year and then she just stopped. She never had any issues from it and lived to be an old kitty. Hoping Pedro's situation is similar and he doesn't have any more. It's scary when you don't know what's going on!

I’m so sorry that both you & Pedro have gone through seizures. I have experienced seizures with my beagle Bo. They’re very traumatic to witness. Our vet wanted to put him on meds, which are tough on the organs & would require frequent bloodwork. I started using cbd on him. The same one I use on my piggies, prior to vet visits, nail trims etc (The same cbd gel pen used by Saskia) A year later, without a seizure, my order was placed too late & he was without it for 3 days. Sure enough, he seized! Proof to me that the cbd was working! It’s worth looking into & could work just as well, as a preventative in piggies. Wishing you & your herd well. {{hugs}}
Phew! Slight emotional rollercoaster but a huge relief to hear Pedro is keeping well now and that you are ok too, as much as you can be! No herd of our own yet but really interesting to hear what you learned and the actions to take if this ever happened. I think idiopathic (no obvious cause, I think that is, long time since my biomedical days! seizures are possible in humans and other animals so hopefully Pedro will continue without any more. If it helps potential owners to think carefully before assuming piggies are simple starter pets too, then it’s all worthwhile. Wishing you all well x

I am so happy and relieved that Pedro seems to be okay. I noticed that he looks like he has gained weight too, which heartens me! He is such a complete sweetheart piggy. Thank you for this wonderful and very informative video, though I am so saddened and sorry that you had to go through such a horrific scare. I have to say, when you first said you didn't know what it was or what to do, I said - how could you know? I had this actually happen to my dad, and I cannot say how traumatized I was by witnessing it and some other things. I keep thinking that it is kind of unfair and sad that we can't just go to an emergency room in most places for our piggies like we do for people (even that is an "adventure" and not always an option). My answer for everything on earth here is "call 911!" I do love at the end of the video, you could see Pedro happily drinking water with Phoebe.

I was sick for a week and my parents had to take care of my piggies for me and I came back to my one piggie not able to walk well… she slowly stopped being able to walk at all… I’m worried it’s seizures and strokes so I’m getting educated on possibilities

Thank you very much for sharing this experience with us all. I have never experienced anything like this. The only reference I'm aware of is through scottysanimals, when one of his rescued boys had a severe mite infestation and was going into seizures. Luckily he managed to pull him through. So it's good to be aware that this can happen without any known cause too. I hope Pedro completely recovers without any further incidents. Wishing you and all your piggies the best of health.

Hi Sarah. Just watching this video again as I think this could be what happened to one of my piggies this morning. She was laying down on her front in the run and I could see what I think were her shoulder blades moving. I picked her up and she seemed very floppy and a bit unresponsive. Took her, as an emergency, to the vets whereupon the vet thought a seizure was possible as she seemed to be paddling her legs up and down. Unfortunately, about 5-6 mins after arriving, she passed away. I am absolutely heartbroken after having her for nearly 6 and a half years. Luna was an awesome piggy and one of my very first. Pretty girl too. She was a silver grey agouti. RIP my little moonbeam. 😭😭😭

Thank you so much for this video it is always helpful for me to be able to learn more about guinea pigs as I have 8 of my own. I am currently on holiday and my piggies are being looked after by a family member who has some experience with guinea pigs, however I am still worried about as I hate leaving them and miss them so much

Omg I’m so sorry🥺🥺 my first piggie had seizures!! my mom woke me up one morning and said “somethings wrong with DJ” i was panicking and we took her to the vet where she was prescribed medicine but as soon as we pulled into the driveway she unfortunately passed :( I understand the stress you’ve gone through!!❤️

And she had upper respiratory the dog said she was all right so to stop her meds aren't antibiotic so we did however she started making a weird noise and she kept jerking her head to one side and it's really really scary. And it was like she had a hard time reading through her nose like her nostrils were kind of blocked up but I started her back on her meds and she pulled through this. So I definitely got to get her in to see the vet.
My family had a beagle that had seizures. The breeder said she would take him back, give us another dog, but they would put him down. He was on seizure meds until he died. I hope they find something for sweet Pedro.
Sadly my piggy passed this Monday morning I believe it was a stroke. At the time it didn’t even cross my mind I honestly just tried my best to get him to respond he did barely eventually but passed away a little later… it was a learning experience and I hope to be better prepared if it ever happens in the future. No vet was open at this time. The sad thing is he was only around 3 so I didn’t believe anything like this could happen.
The strange eye-tracking is something that elderly dogs also have, it's not generally a seizure in my experience with my pug. I was told by my veterinarian that it's a nervous issue due to age. I hope Pedro doesn't have any more "episodes", because he's such a beautiful boy! I hope it's nothing serious. I will be following his status as best I can, and send you and your herd lots of positive energy.

I am pretty certain that my guinea pig Gus had a seizure, the symptoms you describe sound very similar. I rushed him to the emergency vets but unfortunately, little Gus didn't make it 💔

This can be so scary. My dog has epilepsy. When she 1st had them I was crazy scared. I thought she was choking. They didn't last long. She had another 2 weeks later. I went to the vet too. I had to watch for them again. When she had a few more she was tested. Now she is on phenobarbital. Lowest dose. We also give her CBD oil with a small amount of THC. This has helped so much. She hasn't had one in a yr.

I thought my poor bubbles was trying to reach a itchy spot and had a muscle spasm. Then it kept happening......😓 started off with one here and there but now it happens several times a day
I know that had to be scarey for you and Pedro. I had a female schipperke that had idiopathic seizures. One was brought on by a hot day, the second was about two weeks afterwards but we were home. Phenobarbital is usually one med for seizures but trying to get a dosage so small for a piggy might be tricky. Did you notice Pedro's eye movement when it drifted to side then corrected itself, was it a bit jerky or a smooth motion! I know that nystagmus can occur when some things (brain electrical system) are disrupted (misfires). I pray Pedro has no more issues. Seeing a seizure in any pet is truly unnerving and make sure feel so helpless.
I am sorry you had been through that. I gave it a immediate like which I dont do with out watching. I now wonder if there is such a thing as a mini stroke I had it happen to me in hospital at the beginning of the year. I was diagnoised with a stroke and recovered in 3 days.
I sorry to hear about your mini stroke, and glad you were able to recover quickly! It sounded like piggies are similar and can have mini strokes, but the vet advice seemed to point to a seizure. We are still wondering!
