A fantastic tutorial. You have gotten a really organic look using the wetblending, the basing stage also is very interesting. I love to see how your techniques evolve through your tutorials, teaching us more tools to paint.
Sorastro, you're painting guides are easy to follow and fun to watch. I started painting minis about the time you started your Imperial Assault series and I have to say that you're videos are one of the main reasons why I took the leap of faith and started putting paint onto plastic. I really enjoy the hobby, thank you for helping me get started.
I have been painting miniatures for more than 15 years and since I have been watching your videos, I have improved my limited skills as a painter. You are great! In my opinion, the Rancor is the best miniature of your Imperial Assault´s serie. Thank you so much for the inspiration that you give us with each video!
That wasn’t a tutorial! It was flippin docu-film! Sooo good!!! I still can’t comprehend the level of production you put into these vids Mark. Truly unique amongst the horde of mini-painting content creators.
Wow, the base on that beast is amazing, as well as the figure itself but I think my favorite part of your channel is most definitely your scenic bases, They add a whole new level to the figures. I really am enjoying this series.
After watching your tutorial I immediately ordered Jabbas Realm. You are a superb painter better than me. I haven't picked up a brush for a few years, you inspired me to get back into it, hopefully with your help I'm still as good as I used to be and can achieve as stunning result as you.
no i o czymś takim pisałem! czekałem na Twój pokaz i nie zawiodłem się. teraz z niecierpliwością czekam aż w Polsce pojawi się dodatek by spróbować pomalować-nie-nadac mu życia; jak Ty. brawo.
Another fantastic tutorial. The idea of using different colored washes to add variety to a large, monochrome figure is brilliant. I've picked up a lot on using different colors when doing shading and glazes from your series that I think is adding a lot to my own work. Even though I chose to use clear plastic bases for my Star Wars Assault figures, the basing section of the video provided sone useful tips for other basing projects. Thanks again!
Outstanding! Another fantastic tutorial (both painting & production). I have been watching from the beginning & have taken the plunge to give life to my Imperial Assault figures after gaining a great deal of confidence from your series. 16 Stormtroopers (elites & heavy included) almost complete. Cannot wait to see more from you & continue to develop my skills with your guidance. Again an outstanding production.
After seeing this video I have been using more wet blended base coats! Thank you so much for that. I love how it blocks in a lightmap right from the start. I've used this technique on everything from dinosaurs to barbarian fur armor. Absolute game changer.
Superb work! It turned out so well it looks like a ILM prop or model used for showing the position of scene elements and the size of the Rancor in relation to the characters.
Starting from around 1/3 of the movie length I was talking to myself - wow, this looks like it's already finished, but you kept on adding more and more... :) I'm so happy for the fantastic basing tutorial - water effect looks crazy sick! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
I don't collect the SWIA minis, but I remember having a couple old GW metal Great Unclean Ones and will definitely try this technique and colours scheme on one of them. Copying is the greatest form of flattery, as the saying goes. :) The " messy" wet blend, using the gloss medium, is something I'm particularly keen on to try.
As alway, fantastic tutorial. I have all but this figure, but it is on my wife's list of next expansion to get for the game. Wow that finished rancor looks so sweet! Really nice job blending the colors, and that base looks amazing. I'm going to use these techniques to paint some imps from my doom game =)
Your videos are absolutely amazing, best resource for IA painting! I picked up IA in January and never painted before and your videos have been a huge help! Just wondering if there's a specific place you pick up your miscellaneous objects/skulls for your bases?
Thanks a lot Coulter! Those spare "bits" are mostly from old Warhammer kits where you get various options for the minis so are invariably left with excess parts. :)
Great video. I love your confidence mixing the colors... are you always sure of what will be the results? Thanks for teaching and making us believe that painting miniatures is an easy thing! (Is not, at least for me ;)
Thanks Sergio! I usually test my colours out before filming, and sometimes I find what I’m after very quickly, and other times I have to experiment (and fail!) quite a bit until I’m happy with my colour choices 😀
Your work is consistently so, so good. Once again, deep thanks. I'm about a year in and really loving the hobby and my own personal progress. I appreciate you so much as a teacher. I spied a Hired Gun in your opener. Any plans for a tutorial, or shall I want to glean from your Greedo video and go from there?
Thank you rstott24! I won't be creating a video for the Hired Guns but did provide a Patreon exclusive PDF quick guide for them. You certainly could use the Greedo skin approach though :)
Another great video, S! I did have a few questions. 1) about how much wash did it take to cover the entire Rancor? & 2) Is the UHU glue a standard model airplane cement, or something else?
Sorastro's Painting a beginners question if you allow: the prep n spray in the different colors... is it just a visual aide where you will have to remember the highlights for shade/light effects, or do the different spray colours themself have an effect on upcoming layers in terms of brightness?
+blunznsepp Hi again! That's a good question. It really depends on how thick your paint is and how many layers you apply. In this case, although I kept the paint reasonably thick, I only applied a single layer so some of the zenithal pre-shade would indeed show through. :)
Sorastro's Painting thank you so much good sir... so next steps will be to acquire some colours and imperial assault figurines- then ill humbly try to reproduce some of your magic 😊
Great work, as always. Do you think I could mix inWash some normal green paint into the wash-mix? I don‘t want to spend more money just for this miniature...
Hello mister ! As always, greate great job !!! I have an issue during the first shading. I think I apply too much shade and I lose a lot of colour behind. Do you have a way to recover a too shade paint ? I think of repaint the base color on the shade as for the stormtrooper to get back the colors especially on the face. Thank you for your time and great great job I learn to paint with your video !
I had exactly the same issue. I think i will heavily dry brush the model with two tones light-darker and carry on with the secondary washes. How did you fix yours?
@@uluairi re apply base coat and be more precise with the shading. Since this figure I do a lot more and I think army painter shade are less thin than citadel, so I try now to apply them more precisly.
The base looks fantastic. I'm planning to try and do a similar one but I'm going to go for more greenish, mossy look. How would you go about that? Would you change basic colors or just added some shades?
Fantastic video (as always)! I've noticed that you regularly apply zenithal highlights in your tutorials and you mentioned you could do this with spray cans. Is that as simple as just priming in black and then only using white from a certain angle? I'd love to see using spray cans as an example in a future video (because while I enjoy painting, I don't have the budget to justify getting an airbrush).
Do you find it difficult to dry brush with acrylics? They always dry too quickly for me. Great videos always an entertaining watch! Your voice is also very relaxing hahaha!
Thanks Samuel! I don't find it difficult, but you're right about them drying quickly (especially when used quite thick) - you just have to work fast! :)
Sorastro is my favorite brush painter on youtube. Awesome tutorials, and the results are amazing. Also like there are these cool tips, like the murky water and saliva. If I would be purely objective, there are better painters on youtube (like NextLevelPainting), but those channels are heavy on airbrush, so it's an unfair comparison.
Nigel's right! I did Han's gun with non metallic paints.. I'm not really a fan of NMM to be honest, but am enjoying a strange metallic/NMM approach at the moment (like with the HKs) :)
It was a very small amount. I honestly thought that was the direction he was going with the HKs. It can be a bit of an advanced technique and often only looks good from one or two angles so I understand if it doesn't ever come up.
Hey Sorastro, Great vid as always! I've just got a couple of questions, The Spray Varnish that u use at the end of each painting, is it required, or do u think that it would be possible to just paint on Vallejo Matte/gloss varnish? And also, I was planning on painting my HKs in a similar tone to the large Imperial Assassin Droids from Star Wars Rebels, or kind of in a Probe Droid style. How would you reccomend I paint the base coat if I only have a White spray primer, but want it to have a metallic, Probe Droid style look? Or should I buy a Grey Primer? PS I only have Vallejo Paints :)
Hi Isaac! Brushing on Vallejo varnish would work great. I think a white prime for your HKs would also be fine. For a dark metallic look like the SW Rebels assasin droids you might want to mix a little black into whatever metallic tone you're using, and I imagine you'll the throwing a dark wash on top too? :)
+Sorastro's Painting Hey! Great, that helps a bunch! Thank you so much! Yeah, definitely gonna give it a wash. Btw, if it's not too much trouble, which wash would you reccomend? I've been using Vallejo's Black ink, and when raw, turned my stormtroopers pure black. Needed to dilute it w 1 part ink and 3 parts thinner for it to have a grayish color. Do u think that I should buy a pot of Nuln Oil?
No problem! Yes, I think either some Nuln Oil or Vallejo's own black wash - www.amazon.co.uk/Vallejo-Model-Color-Wash-Paints/dp/B00AOL8G8S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1492719223&sr=8-2&keywords=vallejo+model+wash (they also do quite a nice grey one) would be a good idea :)

Adding an image of the paint being used was a nice touch. Great idea!
Thank you! I'm glad you found that useful :)
Great work with finding such a nice paint scheme for the model and the base is outstanding. Truly a masterpiece!
+Patrick Andersson Thanks so much Patrick!
Sorastro the best one for a nice painting work at home.
Thanks a lot Franki! :)
YES!! i was hoping i didn't have to wait long for your rancor video. that base is blowing my mind. i can not wait to paint mine.

Thanks a lot xTaikoen! Yes.. it would have been a pretty short video without the basing stuff, but a figure like this demands an epic base :)
The base is sick! Really love the water effect and how you added the murky water between the layers.
Amazing stuff. Love the way you use several colors on his skin and make it look so good. I might try that if I get a mini of that type.
+TheObliviJohn Thank you sir! Easy and effective is what I aim for :)
Wow! I was about to buy Return to Hoth, but now I might get Jabba's Realm just for the Rancor! Great Job!
Thanks Chris! They're both great sets tbh, but the Rancor mini is truly epic! :)
This one is really stunning! Thanks!

Sorastro's Painting Hi,
The base. I'm painting Malifaux Gremlin army now and I imagined them on damp, murky swamp bases.
I guess you could mix a little more green into the browns used to paint the base, and then you would stick on more mossy/swampy types of foliage :)
Do you know if there is a safe seal to add these figures to a saltwater aquarium? Or if that's even needed?
Hi! Hmm I'm not sure to be honest.. would be cool to have a Rancor in an aquarium though! :)
amazing as usual. please can you advise some citadel alternatives to karak stone and rakarth flesh please?
Hi Adam! For Rakarth Flesh, Stonewall Grey (VGC 72.049) is pretty close, and for Karak Stone try Khaki (VMC 72.061) :)
fantastic as ever!

Hey!
Excellent, thank you so much again for your help!! : )
