In this case the parents are moving and they won't have a place to stay. And there's no way they should stay in San Francisco while they look for jobs. It would be cheaper to move to Wisconsin and then look rather than stay in SF and start paying rent.

I use two envelope systems. I have two complete envelope sets, one stays at home with all the next weeks cash or roll over cash. I then keep one on hand for gas money, groceries and small kids stuff in the budget. This also gives me place to put my receipts. I would rather pick it up on the way home if possible then make an extra trip. I can fill up my gas tank if I have extra time and I don't have to worry about forgetting my cash on the way to the grocery store. If I get off early I can do my weekly shopping on the way home. Once you do your budget for a while it is easier to be able to do things when you have time. I get nervous keeping all my cash in my purse. Life is very busy with kids and activities.
Better than I deserve, budget, every dollar, beans and rice, sell the car, baby steps, live like no one else so later, you can live no one else... next!

When I left Palmdale(Lockheed) for NASA years ago I didn’t need to start right away Had the money to fly there beforehand to get my apartment. Just set my start date a month later and took leisurely drive getting there visiting places along the way. Less hassle when you have savings, investments, and emergency fund.
