A comment from little Denmark; the whole security argument regarding Greenland is absurd. The US military has had free rein on Greenland to anything they wanted to do, since the beginning of WW2. The Thule airbase is practically US territory. The US airforce lost 2 nuclear bombs, when a B52 crashed at Thule. As far as I know, the radar at Thule is still the most forward positioned early waring radar, in terms of russian nuclear ballistic missiles. If the US military wants more bases up there, they will get it. So please spend some time reading up on the US military in Greenland, from WW2 till now. And compare the living standards on the US Virgin Islands, to the ones in Greenland. Since they were the last islands, we sold to the US. I am sure you will be able to find people down there, that would rather have stayed with Denmark rather than becoming a US colony.
Co-sign on the part about Greenland. And if Trump wants more bases or drilling rights in Greenland, Greenland deserve to negotiate for good deals. They have a lot to offer. But there's a certain effed up logic to him just wanting to take it over with the military, because he probably thinks he'll save money in the long run, alongside the whole colonizer legacy thing. The part about Virgin Islanders I can't speak to at all; I simply have no idea.

@@CharlesCribbs Your understanding of history is just plain wrong. The war was going for several years before the US got involved and during the war the US' investment of resources are not comparable to the costs endured by Europe and, given their relatively safe position (only significant attack against US was Pearl Harbour) their military industry profited and expanded to incredible heights. The US became the superpower it is today as a result of WW2. No one disputes that since the war US investment has been massive, but also few people Europe are under the illusion that that was just out of the kindness of their hearts. The US decided it's security, power and economic might in the world depended on a strong & stable Europe and acted (and profited) accordingly. It's true that European countries took advantage by not investing the required 2% into their defence spending, but US administrations have understood that they are still benefitting nonetheless. This attitude that you show is childish and exactly what Europeans are thinking of as we're coming to terms with the unreliability of our relationship with the US now. Europe will, for a time, be less secure if the US withdraws from NATO, but it has the resources to make up for it. The US will never recover the influence it had if it chooses to go isolationist, even hostile, towards it's current allies.

I have been very disheartened at how US media has treated Trump's threat to use US economic might to "force" Canada to become part of the US. This is a violation of Canada's sovereignty. Sovereignty is not a joke. Canada is not a joke. Trump is a megalomaniac, and he is a clear and present danger to all people of good-will.

I am waiting for the day you two acknowledge how neoliberalism plays into the world we are in. People’s lives have gotten worse due to capitalism and oligarchy, while liberals continue to tell us things are good and our lives are better. The increasing poverty and hopelessness helps people like Trump and the ongoing chaos we see. Go further in your analysis.
I don’t think you’ll ever hear that acknowledgement, they’ll still be applauding Democrats protecting political norms while literal fascists burn the country
Totally agree. Trump isn't the problem; he's the consequence of 40+ years of neo-liberal orthodoxy. Where I'm from, the "left" and "right" are just differing levels of neoliberal stupidity... it doesn't surprise me at all that people vote in a way that delivers a middle fingered salute to the establishment. It's just a pity that Trump is just another self-serving cretin who will dump on those less powerful to advance himself and his family.
Personal comment of Laura Botten: As a Canadian I don't see Trump having anything to do with Trudeau's resignation. Yes, Freeland pointed to Trump's tariffs as a reason Trudeau should go but because of Trudeau's plans and his not being fiscally responsible and forward thinking, given that possibility was on the horizon. This has been the complaint about the Liberal party for longer than Trudeau's been alive so one could say that Freeland used Trump as an excuse to put herself in a position to separate from Trudeau's "brand" and run for leadership because the writing is on the wall for Trudeau. This is what Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, was trying to do in September when he "ripped up" the Supply & Confidence Agreement: put the NDP in a position to be separate from the Liberals given there is an election coming at any time. There isn't SUPPOSED to be an election in October, there has to be an election BY October. Even without a minority government that could fall at any moment within a year of when an election MUST be called, we start watching the prime minister for signs that he'll call an election. Typically they try to balance when the deadline is and when their polls are high so they have the best chance at winning. If the Liberal poll numbers were +10 instead of -20 this past summer, Trudeau would have called an election and not waited to be kicked out. He just held on hoping for a turnaround that never came and time is running out.
@@stephenglover8828 You can say he had an effect, but not everything. Chrystia Freeland's resignation was the straw that broke the camel's back and she mentioned being fiscally responsible to guard against Trump, but Trudeau should have taken a walk in the snow Feb 29, 2024. Things were bad for him then!
Essentially right, but I do think you're underselling the factor Trump's rhetoric is playing in things. Its not the main factor, but its certainly a contributing factor in the timing.

Are Trump's Threats to Take Greenland and the Panama Canal Serious?' Does it matter at this time or are the media (journalists, podcasters, news hosts) and individuals being deflected from what is important, at this time? I posit you, people like you and much of the media are being played like a fiddle by Don-the-Con (again) as he turns attention from his promised "perfect phone call" to terminate the Putin-Ukraine War in 24 hours before his inauguration or not producing concrete details on his "concepts of a plan" regarding American healthcare that will "be great" and replace the ACA that he has had 10 years to work on in between golfing . One thing to note about the UK grooming gangs is that two of the main issues were actually classism and misogyny. Politicians wang on endlessly about the "woke" police (lol) not wanting to move against the Asian men doing the grooming. But when you look at the facts, it was actually because they thought the victims were worthless trash and all girls like them "had older Asian boyfriends". And the vast majority of groomers in the UK are white men, yet they don't seem to attract quite so much attention.

Its has ZERO to do with the USA. Trump can stop support for the Ukraine, but then NATO/EU will need to step in/step up because Putin has zero intention of stopping. I will also demonstrate to the "free world" that it can no longer consider the USA a full ally. It will also push countries to reduce their liability/risk in being reliant on the USA for Tech, etc etc etc, so in effect that too will have to beef up science, Technology, Manufacturing, food production, etc and in effect be competition in world trade to the USA for these things. Combine how the rest of the world feels about this "new" USA and the US will lose a lot of export income. I have already dumped all US based subscriptions, will buy EU/Asia etc goods ahead of US ones.
Almost looks like it to me as a European. The good thing out of this is maybe that the EU starts to get its act together and shakes off that toxic sugar daddy from across the pond. Europe needs to concentrate on developing its relations with Africa and Asia, curbing Russia and coming to terms with China.

One "fun" fact about Yoon Sukyeol changing his residence: he apparently moved outside the Blue House because it has bad feng shui and his shaman told him to move. That's the "fun" part, the serious part is that him moving his residence caused the police such a hassle that they had to relocate a lot of them, because the president had to move from one side to the city to the other every single day with a huge escort. And this is the main reason why there weren't enough police presence during the Itaweon crowd crush in October 2022 where 159 people died.

Honestly it does seem from Europe's and pretty much from any country's perspective US has to be actually taken as strategic threat, or at very least liability. I mean people in government, or close to it (musk) are throwing threats, and interfering in politics in quite major way etc. And just being very unreliable ally. Idk, it does seems like US has to be gradually treated bit more like authoritarian state, based on it's leader, not as a country.
In 1867, United States Secretary of State William H. Seward worked with former senator Robert J. Walker to explore the possibility of buying Greenland and, perhaps, Iceland. Opposition in Congress ended this project.[64] Following World War II, the United States developed a geopolitical interest in Greenland and in 1946 offered to buy the island from Denmark for $100,000,000; the Danish rejected the offer.
I keep wondering at one point the US Military is going to step up and say: Enough! You can't go threatening world peace just for the H of it. Clearly you're senile, and if Congress isn't going to act, then we have no choice. We are sworn to uphold the Constitution and International Law, and you are a threat to both. This guy needs to be Section 25d, and if Congress or the incoming VP won't act, they should.
Regarding a trade war with Denmark, then Denmark's total yearly exports to the USA is worth around $6.5 billion and the imports are worth around $5.5 billion. To put this into some sort of perspective, then Denmark has seen an increasing government budget surplus since the covid-19 crisis, ranging in the area from around a $8.4 billion to $18.4 billion surplus a year, despite a huge increase in military spending's and billions worth of military aid for Ukraine. However, the EU have already made it clear that a trade war against one of it's members will be dealt with as a trade war against all of the EU, so a US trade war with Denmark over the ownership of Greenland also = a trade war with all of the EU, which would be a disaster for the USA and Trump.
I didn't really understand Tommy's defense of colonial policies toward Greenland at about the 24:50 mark. At 4:54, Tommy said that the new leader will be chosen by Liberal Party members. He should add, that ANYONE can vote in Canada, citizenship optional. Also, it is worth noting that the liberal party is organizing permanent residence and non-permanent residence to vote in the leadership contest. At 5:32, Tommy, Tommy, Tommy… learn to read the polls. Pierre Poilievre, Conservative Leader has a massive 22+% lead. In Canada, thats a slam dunk.
You need proof of Canadian citizenship to vote? We do not have “open elections”. You don’t have to be Canadian to join the Liberal Party and those who are registered Liberal Party members can vote for their new leader but that doesn’t automatically register them for a federal election…
Apparently people think America is invading Greenland, which is hilarious. Because last time I checked Greenland had been talking about breaking away from Greenland. Perhaps Europeans should let Greenland decide what it wants to do.
As a Canadian I do not think we, the working class, can afford Poilievre as head of the country. He is very much like trump and we can see what a train wreak that is going to be for the working class in the US and not how we want to live in Canada. Like trump, PP also speaks only in sound bites criticizing everything but won't explain how he is going to fix anything & gets angry when pushed for a reply. Vote carefully Canada. Please.
The insult isn't just that you're going to "take Canada", but that you would take 40 million people with a land mass larger than your entire country with 50 states and make that large land mass only one state. That's the insult, that you think Canada would deserve only one state and two senators. Many Canadians have hated American arrogance for decades.... This has put you guys over the edge. All of you not just those who voted for Trump because none of you have stopped to think hey, a country larger than our own with 40 million people, more than the population of six of your small states put together... should maybe be more than one state. Dear PSW: I disagree with the view that there are no parallels between the Greenland situation of today and the history of the Canal de Panamá. The US acknowledged commercial and national security reasons at the time, just like the orange monster doing with Greenland now. The US also took advantage of a civil war in Colombia, and of its corrupt and incompetent oligarchy, to support (not so surreptitiously) the forgotten Panamanian population in their desire for independence. While the Danish government is strong and competent, the instability of the current moment presents a similar opportunity. The orange monster probably thinks of Latin America as already an appendix of PR. So he can just take over what he wants and rename places at will. We in the US don't make too much of a fuss about it because that huge part of the continent is underestimated anyhow. It is very likely his majesty does not consider those countries even worth of any kind of annexation (like Canada). The US already gets all it wants from them. - Germán

Focusing on Pierre Poilievre and comparing him to Trump is not only an oversimplification, but it’s also counterproductive. By doing so, we’re diverting attention from the real threat-Trump and his influence on broader global politics. This kind of rhetoric doesn’t help anyone and only clouds the bigger issues at hand.
Not like they are allies, though Poilievre has tried to convince people that he would be better able to deal with the man. But Trump has already thrown Poilievre under the bus. "I don't care what he says." I hope Poilievre recognizes what that means. Trump has no friends outside of China and the Kremlin.

My best hope for Canada is that how far right the Conservatives - notably Pollievre - are going will push people to vote NDP instead of Liberal and we flip from an Lib/NDP Minority to an NDP/Lib Minority. I hope we don't end up with a conservative majority. I don't have a TON of hope for it... but that's my best hope right now. I'm pretty sure Liberals aren't going to do well no matter what they do... but Canada is GENERALLY a more left-leaning country than right(60/40 to 65/35-ish), so there's a decent chance that the former liberal voters won't like what the cons are offering so will vote NDP as their best choice.

I am Canadian and a big fan of all those connected to this podcast and others... please don't say 51 state and then say 'just kidding'. It’s not their fault, I feel like the POD is in a rut still.. Plus they don’t typically pay attention to Canadian politics, and maybe that helps disassociate them from the concerns we feel when annexing language is ‘joked’ about.

This American is not amused. Canada is a great and sovereign nation with my deepest respect. I apologize profusely for this turn of events. Ofcourse, I did not vote for this buffoon.
@@krs1968decover here in Europe we follow this through our media. So, what we see and hear is Florida Boy Orange nonchalantly talking about taking over other territories, Elon Musk recommending to vote for the German fascists and axing the UK Prime Minister and then we watch American media outlets discussing what it would be like if the US really took over Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal.
It won’t take long for us to come to the final conclusion to tell the US “gfy”.
well you people do have a tendency to take everything Trump says as being literal, so I can't really help you.
I think Ben is spot on regarding an aging narcissist "strong" man feeling he needs territorial gains to be remembered fondly.
As a Dane, I am resigned to the fact that the US is no longer a friend. Trump may be gone in four years, but in no way do I believe that normality will resume. The system is setup to elect more demagogues, and they will take what they want and interfere as they please. Question! Do Canadian citizens not vote for PM? Is there no term limit?
I am waiting for the day you two acknowledge how neoliberalism plays into the world we are in. People’s lives have gotten worse due to capitalism and oligarchy, while liberals continue to tell us things are good and our lives are better. The increasing poverty and hopelessness helps people like Trump and the ongoing chaos we see. Go further in your analysis.
I don’t think you’ll ever hear that acknowledgement, they’ll still be applauding Democrats protecting political norms while literal fascists burn the country
Valid point.
@@krs1968dec of course it's a valid point because liberals have lied so much.
Worse? How?
Well said.
Trump has got everything to do with Trudeau's resignation.

This Greenland thing is how Trump intends on convincing Americans that Russia should get Ukraine.

Blinken lost credibility. His sudan statement is ridiculous. No pressure on the UAE AND no progress on Gaza.
Minute 51: ❤ appreciate your opinion, analysis and ideas for solutions,Ben. Thank you
Regarding a trade war with Denmark, then Denmark's total yearly exports to the USA is worth around $6.5 billion and the imports are worth around $5.5 billion.
This kind of rhetoric normalizes 21st century neo-imperialism, terrifying to hear it come out of the mouth of a so-called progressive and nodded along to by Ben Rhodes of all people. You need proof of Canadian citizenship to vote? We do not have “open elections”. You don’t have to be Canadian to join the Liberal Party and those who are registered Liberal Party members can vote for their new leader but that doesn’t automatically register them for a federal election…

Re Gaza, Trump came out at the beginning of the Israel counteroffensive, he said that Gaza should be nuked. Maybe that is what he is talking about.
Dear PSW:
I disagree with the view that there are no parallels between the Greenland situation of today and the history of the Canal de Panamá.
