The time has come to sell the rarest car I own, my 1985 Mitsubishi Galant. This vehicle is certainly not rare in terms of worldwide production numbers, but there are likely only a handful of fifth generation Galants left in the United States. Come join me to learn more about what makes this "normal" 1980s sedan so special!
For sale listing for my Galant coming soon :)

In Australia, this Mitsubishi was sold as the Magna from 1986 to 1991. Late ‘91 the next gen ( wide body) Magna , which Australia built and exported to the USA from about 1992 -2003 as the Mitsubishi Diamonte. The top-spec Mitsubishi equivalent was called the Verada , with the 3.5liter V6 in the last generation of these cars..

The 1983 Sigma was still being sold as a 1987 model in the Philippines. My dad gave me his to drive to and from college by 1990. I miss that thing though it was woefully underpowered. The GL had the 1.6L 4G32 more suited for the Lancer GSR. The 4G63 Super Saloons were exceedingly rare.

Growing up we had a 1987 Galant fully loaded with infiniti sound system with 10 band graphic equalizer, auto suspension, steering wheel audio controls, white with brown leather and a sunroof on top of all the features you present on your 85. What a tech marvel, but unfortunately ahead of its time due to 80s electronics, bad transmission, burning oil, and failing cv joints as chronic issues. Still loved the car and have been trying to find one forever.

The car I would love to save from the junkyard would be the Saab 99 Combi Coupe.
I dunno what it was called in the US but on the right side of the Atlantic it was called "Combi Coupe". Only a few were produced in the late 70ies.
Most 99s were sedans or two-door-saloons, all of the classic three-box-design of the 60ies. But the "Combi Coupe" was a two-door-coupe with the massive tailgate that became common with the Saab 900 just a few years later.
It was basically a big cool hatchback.
It's hard to believe, but it looked really cool. In a way it was the blueprint for the 900, but it look less massive, more sporty, more elegant. And it looked unique.
The interior was unique as well, with the ignition between the front seats and the strange system for the seat bealts, that totaly made sense. I still want to have these seat belt locks. It was a way smarter solution then the common buckle, we're all used to.
The Saab 99 was decently fast for the time with a good 100 bhp. And it handled amazing. In it's days the 99 was one of the best handling cars on loose or wet or snowy or frozen ground. It was a pretty successful rally-car.
Try to google the "Saab 99 Combi Coupe". It's worth a look.

Gorgeous Galant. In Australia we have a widened version of the Galant named the Magna with 4G54 engine (Astron II 2555cc), 5 speed manual (KM164 KM210) or 4 speed ELC auto transmission (KM175 KM177 KM177-6). You have the sedan and the Australian designed wagon. There were 4 trim levels and the top of the range model the Elite had the digital dash, velour interior, etc. There were also a few limited edition versions too.

Maybe this has just snuck up on me but been noticing how awesome your entire graphics package has gotten over the past few months!
As for junkyard save...I nominate the early 90s Chrysler LH sedans.
Those were HUGE when they hit to automotive world back then, and a quantum leap for Chrysler, but you NEVER see clean ones anymore.
They're a great example of a "normal" car thats oh-so-90s, but reliability concerns really let them down.

Thank you, Ethan for all you did to give the Galant some more time & for doing what you can for it to go on to another appreciative owner.
I wish I still had my 1991 Mercury Capri XR2.(Jokingly called the Crapi because of all the inherent issues with those cars.)
I had so many associated collectables & added nearly every option available. I also corrected everything broken, except for paint. But life hits below the belt sometimes & I made the, I feel, wrong decision to sell.

They are rare on the roads now. Considered just a car, they were destined for the scrapper, like the Falcon, Fairmont, Fairlane and LTD (I had a 1987 Fairmont, dad had a 1986 Fairlane). In the last 5 years they are now worth money now the plant's have shut and nothing is being exported from Australia anymore. Was the first car Australia produced with climate control. This was an early early car as it doesn't have the electronic dash introduced in 1986. Also rare is it being monotone as most had dual tone paint. Yes the trans in the TM were bad. Fixed in 1991 on the TP my dad had. Same with the cracked blocks.

Mine is in similar condition to yours, needing a bit of mechanical work and some rust repairs to keep it on the road.

I remember when I was a kid and the Mitsubishi Magna was first released. It looked so cool and futuristic. Every model of the Magna sold like crazy in Australia 🇦🇺 and they were all on the roads for years so they lasted. Such a shame what Mitsubishi is today. I'd save any 80s Mitsubishi, Mazda or Honda .

What about the Toyota Camry’s of the day? I think they would have outsold the Magna’s back then. The wagons were popular with companies as company cars , and Budget car rentals had a few Magna’s as well...

My 2 favorite cars that I drove when I was a teenager were my parents 1983 Chrysler Lebaron and 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra. Those are 2 cars i wish I could save.

We had these in Australia, except they were made wider and called the Mitsubishi Magna.

These were awesome cars. Uncle had a new 86 with electronic suspension and unique alloys. They were too unconventional for the staid American market at the time. They added length, a V6 and a Sigma designation to distinguish it from the new 89 Galant.
BUT, the transmission issue was common (same for the Camrys at the time). It is what motivated my uncle to sell his Galant in 92 to buy the new Camry. Ahh, memories of a time when vehicles all didn't look like the same cross-over, cookie-cutter nonsense that passes for transportation today.

Mitsubishi did offer the Starion and possibly other models in the US in 1983, that was their first year in the US. And you would have seen a very clean and very rad 5th gen Galant Sigma at Radwood LA in 2018 and 2019! :)

You're right, some were available in '83. But I think they were 1984 model year, right? And yes, I do remember seeing that Galant!

Was thing thing more in the price bracket of a Camry, or a maxima? It reminds me a lot of the 1988 maxima I had in 2016. More than likely because of the wide squared off look and the cushy seats (Man I loved my dark blue valour). I didn't have reclining rear seats, or the sweet steering wheel setup. I did get a stereo with a graphic equalizer, though, so that was pretty cool.

The first gen front drive Galant - I loved these cars when they came out in Barbados where I live, but the smaller Lancer (Colt) always outsold it and it wasn't quite big enough to compete with the likes of the Toyota Cressida and Nissan Laurel. I think there are only two on the road over here, a US spec one and a UK spec model, but I haven't seen either of them for at least six years now. Hope it goes to a good home; are parts still readily available for it?
